I had originally planned to get to Vegas in 2020 and time it with the chip convention and a potential meetup.

My wife now wants to go to england to visit her family, and is claiming she is going to book her flight on Monday because she found a cheap one.

This opens the door for me to go to Vegas solo in the first week of June next year, whilst she is away.

I’ve heard from a friend here that the golden nugget is one of the best low stakes games in Vegas because it has a 1/3 uncapped buyin and it’s not uncommon for drunk morons to buyin for a couple of thousand. I expect to have around $10k-$15k available bankroll by that point, so I won’t be rolled for 2/5 or 5/5.

The point of my trip will be purely to play cash games and live my full time poker dream for that 8-9 days.

What do people think about the golden nugget versus being on the proper strip?

Bearing in mind my goals here are to stay cheaply and to be near decent games. I’d also like to do some kind of harvesting to take myself home the start of a mixed set maybe.

I would 100% stay on the strip and venture out to Fremont as desired.

Fremont is a different world and while I appreciate the old school charm I spend 90% plus of my time on the main strip.

Deals can also be found on the strip. TI Flamingo etc.

Ok thanks @Lemonzest

I must admit I’m totally ignorant about Vegas really. It does look like Fremont (if that’s what the nugget area is called) looks a bit far off.

I won’t really worried too much about the tourist thing. I also heard the Vegas cash games get decent during the World Series, but I wonder if the first week of June is going to be too early for that effect to have kicked in.

So 2-0 for the strip. I sense where this is going lol.

Is it possible to get somewhere on the strip for under $100 per night?

I’m a strip guy but I’m a snob in general lol.
I’m also a total hotel snob usually. But on this trip I’m leaving behind my snobbishness and going cheapskate, because I have to ensure I don’t upset the wife by spending too much without her.

I always stay Downtown... that being said... I go a lot (or used to).

I recommend that you stay on or near the Strip. Assuming you are looking for good poker games. These will more than likely be had at the Strip properties.

That’s not too bad. I have a few hundred thousand flight points. I might be able to do it that way.

Otherwise if I run ok I might be able to swing a quick cross country detour lol

Fremont is what the area with Golden Nugget is called.

It is also way sketchier area with more street people and one eyed hookers.

The main strip is cleaner and safer.

If you are at Fremont at night dont leave the main strip area and venture out on side streets. Its sketchy as hell.

One of my rich friends actually refuses to go to Fremont anymore...

First week of June is perfect to catch WSOP players. Tons of good games all over Vegas.

There used to a guy in a white suite who would buy into that 1/2 game at the golden nugget for $30,000. Was there all the time. Very tight player from what I heard and he would leave in anyone bought in that could threaten his stack.

I haven’t been to Vegas in awhile but my guess is you will find more drunk money in the strip. Also, June is WSOP time so there is always good cash game action. I am go out i June as well to play a ~$2k event.

Also, I am new to this forum. What is the chip convention? Sounds like a fun way to become poor.

I have come to the realization that staying on the strip is only really worth it if you have a group you are going with that will be staying at the same property or if going with your wife and want a really nice room.

If your primary focus is to play poker and see how much money you can make in the trip stay someplace decent but off strip. The resort fees alone will cost you $300 for a 9 day trip.

The cost of an Uber is cheap to get to the strip or wherever you plan on playing.

Make sure you use the Bravo app so you can see what games are going on at each casino.

And $15k is plenty to play $2/5 for a week if you are playing well. Getting enough sleep, eating well and not drinking too much.

Another Strip Vote. I have no need to go downtown, there is plenty of action for you on the strip. Way more actually if you consider the wide variety of skill at the different casino's. Aria for example is a lot different player than the Flamingo or Planet Hollywood. You will find whatever you are looking for on the strip.
I also agree with everything @Lemonzest stated above.
Plenty of people are "downtown" people, but its not for me!

i vote for strip. I really like centrally located like Flamingo. Pretty cheap and easy walk to the nice daily at the Venetian in one direction and the Aria in the other. Flamingo has an ok poker room with ok later at night tourneys too.

I've never stayed at the Nugget, but it consistently gets good reviews. It is on my list to stay at next trip. You could also split your time between two properties depending on how long your trip was.

I love playing at the Nugget for that reason of being able to buy in deep, and as @Highli99 mentioned DUKE will sometimes show up with a ukulele case with 100k-200k and play in this game and will fold everything unless he gets Aces

Since you will be going by yourself why not stay at multiple locations? That way you can check out several places and see what you like and don’t like about each. It can be a bit of pain checking into different places a few times but it can save you a decent amount of money and you ou might be surprised by some of places.
And if you hate the first place you stay you’ll be happy that you’ll be checking out in a night or two lol. :ROFLMAO:

Strip.. Bally’s is cheap, centrally located and has a poker room with PH and Flamingo just a short walk for poker also.

As @Rhodeman77 says, the resort fees seem a bit crazy. Not sure I’m keen to pay those.

My first thought was stay off the strip in something self contained, if possible. I do a fair bit of weight training and take my diet quite seriously, so I like the idea of cooking myself as much as possible.

I like the idea of maybe staying in a couple of place. This is purely a poker trip and 99% cash games, so I’m not bothered about not seeing much of Vegas and being in a nice location.

Might check out Bally’s and flamingo.

There are several nice condo/time shares you can look into renting.

Check out Tahiti Village, a friend has a time share there that some of our group stayed at it during the World Series and they loved it.

Its sketchy as hell.

Found this out the hard way running the marathon a while back. All good on the strip but when we peeled off to get into the main part of the run holy crap did the mood change in an instant.

Stay on the strip. You can bag great deals mid week at Harrah’s, Linq, and probably a few of the Wynn and MGM properties nearby. Luxor it seems is always begging for attention these days too. Join their players clubs online if you can and start looking at the promo rates. Doesn’t hurt to call up the place and see what they can offer you, too.

be smart too about how you carry that much cash. You can wire money to casinos ahead of time but it can only be used for gaming.

Don't listen to these effete snobs!

If you want to play at the Nugget, it's a lot cheaper to stay at the Four Queens, 50 yards away. Rooms are fine. And the regular buses down Las Vegas Blvd. to the Strip are dirt cheap, and entertaining to boot.

Plus it's a short walk to Spinetti's and the Gamblers' General Store. (Gotta have priorities!)

Yeah honestly could be fun staying at GN or somewhere on Fremont I just probably wouldnt lol

Thanks for all of the advice people. Part of my planning is convincing the wife that i can do this cheaply.

If I were with her, and we do plan to go together sometime, I’d be on the strip in a nice resort paying $200-300us per night.

On my own playing poker, I’d really like to slum it and pay $40-80 if possible. I’ll look at a bunch of options I think and run it past her.

I usually use Orbitz for hotels. Any other websites people recommend? In terms of pricing, Is it better to book hotels early or last minute in Vegas?
