Hi all,

I know one day I will be getting myself a custom set of chips, be they ceramic or CPC, some years down the line.
I also know that I should start designing now because it will take me forever to land on a design that I am comfortable with.

I wanted to play with an outer space theme.
Here is what I have so far as a very rough start. The central image is just a neon sign I found on google, but I like the aesthetic so I'm using it as a jumping off point.

Possible words to use in the "club" name are: Cosmos, Aurora, Galaxy, Eclipse, Equinox, Worm Hole, Black Hole, Asteroid, Odyssey, Milky Way, Galileo, Gravity, Planetary, Interstellar, Stellar, Nebula, Blue Dot, etc..

So far I like the simple, clean, and colorful aesthetic, but it feels a little plain.
What are common additions in poker chip design? Maybe a circular border, or some speckles of stars?

Thanks all!

I love it. A solid start for sure.

Borders are sometimes used, but beware that if you are designing for CPC there will be variations in how off center the inlays are cut. Borders can accentuate the inconsistent nature of the process. Check out the picture below of my Signal CPC set. I was going for a 50s look, which includes lots of off center cuts, so I purposefully chose a border that would accentuate the handmade look of the chips. Look at the 2 o'clock position on the $5 and $20 chips to see what I mean.

On the small details like stars. They can be nice additions, but be sure they show up on the size inlay that you are designing for. Print out the inlay to scale on paper and hold it at arms length. If you can't readily pick out the detail from that distance, you may want to reconsider.

Ultimately, you will likely have two very different designs between ceramic and CPC, so you should probably pick a target to help narrow down your design process. If you are designing for something like a Sun Fly hybrid, then the designs could be very similar, but if you are going full ceramic, the designs could be way different.

We've had a few space sets over the years, and I can think of one off the top of my head that is a hall of fame entry. It can be done, and I think you have a great start.

I think Milky Way ("Via Lactea") theme was used by another PCF member some years ago.
Whenever I see "Cosmos" I think of Dr. Carl Sagan (RIP).

I guess a theme like these would start off with a black-background inlay, huh?

Wow I LOVE your design here, and I can already start thinking of some revisions I want to make with mine.
I definitely like the look of a border, and I don't think I mind the slightly off-center inlays (I wouldn't have even noticed).
Thank you for the reply and the tips, I hope to share with you my revisions on this thread in the future; I can tell you've got some good taste!

“The Casino at the End of the Universe”

I am a huge Douglas Adams fan, so this suggestion opens my mind to a bunch of great ideas, thank you!

Give that planet a couple of moons - “Two Moons Card Room”

Love the sound of that, and I love the inspiration I get from this and the other posts. Thank you!

I am definitely a big fan of Sagan, and this space theme was indeed inspired by his series! (The "blue dot" in my OP was in reference to the pale blue dot as well)
I think a black background may be best suited, but I'll be playing around with this here and there.

Thanks everyone, I've been having so much damn fun on this forum since I stumbled upon it.

Looking forward to hearing more suggestions and feedback, and sharing my progress.

What if you keep the idea of space exploration, but make it more grounded in reality? So I see you are in LA, and Griffith Observatory comes to mind.

What about the simple name - “The Observatory” - and have a graphic of an open dome on the chip?

Just an idea...maybe for a second set of chips.;)

Awesome idea and really cool suggestions in the thread! Exciting to see where this goes. I would definitely do this on ceramics.

I like the observatory idea a lot!

Coincidentally, a few hours after making this thread, my wife gave me a $600 gift card to CPC!
We are having our first baby any day now (literally can be any minute) and it was a father's day gift, best wife ever!

Looks like this will come to life sooner than I thought!
