Asking this out of ignorance since I'm very new to PCF and chipping in general. Have never seen a TRK chip in real life.
Can someone explain to me the obsession/high prices of TRK chips?
TRK chips have a look and feel that is quite different from Paulson and other chips. The feel of TRKs is very different than most chips--similar to old, pre-lead-ban Paulsons. They have a solid, buttery feel when shuffling and playing with them. Also, for the most part, casino TRKs available in quantity are from the golden age of casinos in Nevada and California...most are from the 50s, 60s and 70s...and are just so cool looking and have history to boot. The inlays and hotstamps just have a very old school look. Part of this is attributable to the "cottage industry" aspect of most chip manufacturing prior to GPI conglomeration of chip manufacturers (seriously--
TRK was run as a Mom-n-Pop (ok, just Pop) small manufacturer, and was quirky to say the least, but in a great way). The color palette was limited, but with just stellar colors. The choice of spot patterns was similarly limited, but with great options that have a great mid-century modern aesthetic.
Prices have much to do with the relative rarity of TRKs. Especially in the home market, where
TRK used to make custom chips, but few of us obsessives ever had a set made. This is my BIGGEST chip regret.
But a game with them is worth a 1000 words...I will bring a set with me sometime soon when the NYC PCF crowd gets together for a game. But I warn you: once you go
TRK, it's hard to go back....
