I may perhaps change my mind, but it just seems to be "wrong" to me, & I get a slight "kringe" whenever I read about someone that is going to pry or dig a real factory inlay off a set of Paulsons, so the can the apply their own sticker instead ...
I always think, "geez, do that to some China Clays or some other type of blanks" ...
It's no big deal, " to each their own" ....
But it seems just like buying a $400 bottle of 200 yr old wine or Scotch, & then pouring it all into a pitcher filled with Kool Aid & Supermarket brand seltzer ...

A lot of people have done that because you can't get custom made Paulsons. Way back in the day you had limited custom hot stamp options, but those days are very long gone. If you want that paulson feel and sound but as your own semi-custom chip, it is unfortunately the only way. :(

I'm all about labeling over the inlays on chips. I like just applying the label over because you can remove them with no damage to the original inlay.

Ya, this... Unless the chips are so badly worn, that the recess is all but gone, then why not do this? Why would u ever rip off the inlay? If the chips are THAT worn, who'd want them anyways...

^This^

Completely replacing the inlay with a laminated vinyl textured label creates a semi-custom Paulson chip that is virtually indistinguishable from one with an original inlay. It's the closest one can get to actual custom mint Paulson chips (these days), and you can pick/choose which colors and edge spots you want to use. What's not to like?

I even have custom T500,000 denominations for my GCOP set from BCC -- Gear replaced the inlays on T5 chips with custom artwork labels, and now I have two barrels of ultra-high society that match the set perfectly. You absolutely cannot tell they aren't original inlays.

placing a label over paulson chips that were plentiful and cheap back in the day, and had enough recess is the only thing i have done, any attempts to remove a label were futile, on the other side ASM's were great as they would pop off very easy.....

i dont think there are any paulson labels you can remove with little effort is there?

@Gear does it perfectly. I don't know the details of his method/process, and don't care. The results are perfect.

yeah i would like to hear how he does it without stabbin his hand 30 times.....

i agree to add a denom to a set is a great idea as you mentioned, but i have cringed also when reading a few posts here where the someone wanted to remove a label from a quality and not plentiful paulson chip to place a self designed label that looked like a turd boiling in water that makes you cringe a bit.....but they are your chips, do what you want with them

I cringe a bit about replacing a Paulson inlay with a custom label, but I'm pretty forgiving about matching an existing casino inlay to make a new denom. Turning Garden City $1s into Aztar fracs is fine with me, for example.

The very thought of doing this once turned my stomach, but I have a set of Endy era home Paulsons that are good candidates for some of Gear's "inlay replacement therapy" if I can ever figure out the right artwork to use.

It seems like I would have to sacrifice label quality to keep the existing inlays, even on minty fresh chips. Your endorsement of the alternate method gives me renewed hope for the project.

I see both sides of this "controversy".

I'm not a hard-core gambler. I really don't care about some closed casino in some state that I've never been to. Podunkoua falls Oregon? I'll buy and relabel that sh*t into a Zombie faster than you can spin up a router blade, and I don't care how "rare" or common those chips are. My games are club themed, and the chip stands to get more play this way.

On the other hand, there are a few casinos that I love and would hate permanently dispose of that history. Anything Vegas strip or downtown for example.

Now as for a nice buttery TRK - I'd love to relabel one of those, but at TRK prices, I cannot bring myself to mill one out. Also, I respect the chipping community members that would lynch me for doing so.

Nice!! @Gear is re-labeling my Casino de Mexico 10's to Le Cove .25cent chips. He gets the chips on Tuesday. Looking forward to the finished product. Will post pictures when I get them back.

is gear removing the inlays or just putting label over inlay?

if you are removing inlay gear we want pictures of your hands front and back so we can see the 30 Xacto blade scars and current wounds on them from kyles order or any others:whistle: :whistling:

As long as your not relabeling Dunes or 4 Queens Arodie's I'm fine with it. As with anything,it all depends on the situation. I've seen some pretty nice relabeled chips that look a hell of a lot better than the originals ever looked. There are a lot of newer casinos these days that have nice color/spot combos but horrible looking inlays. Seems like inlays are the last thing some of these casinos worry about when they design new chips today.

@Gear is doing all the work. Taking out the old label, doing what he does and then applying the new labels.

i would like to know if there is an easier way than the exacto blade/finger stabbing/inlay removal method.....cmon gear give up a few secrets:x

I don't think Gear charges $3/Paulson chip for inlay removal/replacement just to give out his methods for free...

to stab my hand 30 times i would charge more....i dont want the combination to the safe just a rough generalization of the procedure, not like i am asking for the ingrediants to Kentucky Fried Chicken or McDonalds secret sauce sheez.. :ROFLMAO:

pm coming gear

I just get 2mil. Vinyl Labels and apply right over the Inlay. To take off, just peel them, spray a little GooGone, wipe them and they are right back to where they were before ya messed with them.

Doesn't damage or change the chip any.

I totally get the complaint. But on the other hand (and I know I sound like a broken record here) the way they're making Paulsons now, the inlays seem more like stickers than inlays anyway.
Digging out good old textured Paulson inlays does seem mean. Doing that to the current paper-feeling ones? Meh.

Matte laminated labels from @Gear > glossy inlays, but my opinion is biased.

^^ seconded. And if used as inlay replacements, almost impossible to tell they aren't original to the chip. @Gear is a wizard. Real shaped inlay replacements, even. Incredible work.

Saw this in youtube, not sure if it really works.

I would strongly recommend against putting chips in boiling water. My very first attempt at inlay removal used this as another site recommended it in an old thread. The chip warped and then broke when I placed it flat on a surface. Just not worth it when so many other options available.

I generally agree, I've somewhat softened my stance since the over 2 year old OP, & may one day even do a relabel for a Paulson Chip denom not available in an original set I have ...
There are too many posts, however, where someone shows or is selling beautiful & in demand Paulsons, such as, say, LeCove's, & someone quickly posts something about "great for relabel projects " (Yikes!) .. :)
