Recently relocated to Tampa FL and getting my life on track. Here's some changes I'm making that are working out well:

**CREATING HIDDEN MONEY**

- Deposits to my bank account are rounded down to the next $5 increment (i.e. deposit $714 and record it as $710)
- Charges from my account are rounded up to the next $5 increment (i.e. pay $11 for something, record as $15)

**CREATING FREE MONEY**

My credit union offers 2.5% interest on checking account balances provided I

  • Have direct deposit
  • Make 12 charges/month with my bank card
  • Use electronic statements
In addition, my Capital One Quicksilver card gives me 1.5% cashback on all purchases each month.

So I will setup my bank card to fill my SunPass for tolls in $10 increments, allowing me to cover most of the monthly charges I need to meet to earn 2.5% on my bank account.

Then I'll use my Cap One card for the bulk of my monthly expenses (groceries, gas, etc) and pay it off each month. This nets me 1.5% cashback each month on most of my expenses, and keeps my "real" money in my bank account longer earning 2.5% interest.

**POKAAAAAH**

And of course I'm beating up on the blue hairs in the limit Omaha hi/lo cash games each weekend at the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa, which is 15 minutes from home. Adding some supplemental income to boot.

**PAY DAT DEBT!*

Going to focus money on paying down the highest interest debts first (goal is to pay my wifes credit card off over the next 6 months, then redirect that money towards the next highest interest and so forth and so on)

**BUY SHIT ON SALE**

When shopping for groceries will be looking to buy stuff on sale in bulk rather than just buying when we run out of something. A bigger initial hit when stocking up, but presents longer-term savings.

The gnu will be debt free and living a much easier life, take that lack of financial planning education in public schools!

It's a good feeling man. I finally paid off my basement renovation and all the other goodies I got for the man cave

Cash back cards are the best. There are a few websites that tell you how to maximize your cash back.
This one was the best and it worked for a while until the US Mint put limits on how much you could buy and credit card companies applied more restrictions and limits too.

The US Mint wanted to get those $1 coins in circulation so they offered free shipping.
  • Buy the dollar coins from the US Mint website with your card.
  • They would ship them to your house for free.
  • Then you just take them to the bank and deposit them.
  • Pay off credit card. Repeat.

Now that is slick.

Try my recipe: just make a shit ton of money and don't worry about lying to yourself about deposit totals. Easy.

I've since my freshman year of college that each senior should have to take one class on financial planning and one class on how to register and stay on track in college. It's totally ridiculous that you just get thrown to the wolves at eighteen.

Congratulations to you Anthony! It sounds like all kinds of great things are happening for you!

Yeah, it's pretty crazy they force-feed a bunch of classes down our throats that the majority of people won't use in the workforce, but don't teach basic financial planning. Both my parents were HORRIBLE with money, credit, etc. and obviously that impacted my decisions as I moved into college.

Had a pretty rough patch from 2008-2010 that hamstrung us for a few years after that, but life is moving in a very positive direction and my wife and I are both enjoying it immensely.

That was my plan A, but it didn't pan out :p

It's not to late. I didn't go to grad school until 34. I have friends that entered at 38. If you have a bachelors, you could have my lifestyle in short order, my field pays well and is starved for trained workers.

Plus, they pay you to go to grad school.

Just have an associates in business, so would have quite a ways to go to make it work. Plus I'm trying hard to be a Mustachio (http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/) so I can kinda choose my own path.

I actually played poker for a living for a couple of years back when we could multi-table like mad online with rakeback and did alright for myself. Now that I'm within 15 minutes of a live casino I'm going to play part-time and track my results and see if it's possible to make a go of it as a live cash game pro. A lot easier when you have a lower monthly nut needed because you've taken care of debt, are living a slimmer financial lifestyle, etc.

A friend of mine used to go to Canada back when the exchange rate was over 30% and cash in a thousand bucks in quarters. Then he would pay for everything in quarters back in the states. It was real annoying though, when he would pay for bowling and beer frame with Canadian quarters. (I was secretary of the league at the time). But gas was around a buck a gallon then so I guess he made out quite well.
