The End of the Nightmare. And Beginning. (2 Viewers)

Damn man, I'm sorry. I've done a few big moves myself being former military, and the process sucks. We had an office to assist us with damage claims, but as @DrStrange said, the movers have the upper hands. I hope your work can help you sort this out.

I'm with the pitchfork crew here. I'd lawyer up and explore the avenues of how you can go after the moving company for compensation of the damage.

Document everything and take lots of photos. If possible, air your grievances and complaints via email so there is a paper trail as opposed to a phone call.

Good luck Jeff, hope things settle down soon and you are rightfully compensated for your losses.

Also, record any phone call. Texas is a one party consent state.

I just messaged the mover asking what he meant by some stuff is unwrapped and damaged, as I’m not worried about a ding.

He responded with well here’s one piece....(wtf is it doing in some garage with cars!?!?)

I’m heading to bed, at least appliances and internet come tomorrow. Thanks for being a place to commiserate, I know a lot of folks are going through worse right now.
WT actual F?!

You don't need to hear this from me but you got screwed. I've done this size move 3 times and every time it was a breeze. Yes, stuff gets broken but the insurance always covers it without hassle. What sounds odd to me is the bait and switch in France. Usually someone comes to your house before and assesses the volume to be shipped and then you take the nearest container size. This container arrives on the back of a truck outside your house and they load everything into it. The next time you see it will be when they're unloading at your destination.

Take lots of pictures of the damage and claim the insurance.

And next time you do this use Crown. They're shit (they all are) but they don't fuss with insurance. When I moved from Kuala Lumpur to Houston, there were 25 guys in Malaysia who individually bubble wrapped every glass in out kitchen and lovingly packed it in a 20ft container. When the container arrived in Houston there were three guys and we told them just to unload the boxes and we unpacked ourselves. We had a few breakages but they sent an assessor and paid up super fast.

Crown also did our move from Abu Dhabi to Houston, again a 20ft container with everything packed in our apartment on the 74th floor and taken down the lift to the truck in the basement - when it got to Houston we didn't have a single breakage/claim.

And it seems no matter which corner of the world you're moving from/to, it's always $25k.

Ah. So how far can I move and how much space do I get for 37 bucks?

PCF never disappoints! @Darson i needed that recommendation/referral a lot sooner!

So, the start WAS a bit dramatic. Yesterday was BS. Today was just hectic. Random folks kept showing up to move us, I said idc if they stay, I didn’t hire anyone and have no idea who called them in.

In the end we ended up with a two man team, a hard working young man, and the family of 4 (the guy helped, the 3 women just chatted and played with the kids). We have no idea what happened, but a lot of stuff was unwrapped and nothing was labeled. I have no idea who went through everything, but it’s supposedly being looked into, I’m trying to help Sherlock this out.

Our inventory was in French, and 75% of everything was labeled as carton, or box.

In the end, it wasn’t overly crazy. Most things were just damaged, not broke. Bedroom suite, couches, desks, etc. Some chips in a grandfather clock, crack in the TV. While some stuff already had scratches or whatnot, they added dings or gouges to every corner.

This is pretty much every item, was good + condition before, now casino worn.

Completely missing is an office chair, top to kids outdoor table, and case of poker chips. Then again we got some other people’s things, a rug and some curtain rods (gave it to movers). Going to inventory tomorrow and see what chips were in there, so everyone can BOLO. Don’t know if they’re in France or US, but we got eyes everywhere!

If anyone’s waiting on a response from me, I know I have some chips needing my address.

WiFi comes tonight, I’ll reach out to folks and respond then. Once chips are accounted for, I actually have a giveaway to finish that started in France.

Should also note, I’m sure I’ll be finding these until we move out. They’re everywhere:eek:

‘Raising a glass in hopes that you can find some normalicy to get back to after this undeserved experience...even if it’s picking up little white packing turds!

Sorry man - I should have piped up sooner. I assumed your wife's company would be covering this. We have had a shitshow with many of our expats so my company has stuck with Crown for all expat moves for many years now.

The absolute minimum is that you should have an inventory of each packed piece (box of furniture item if not boxes). The create this as they go, each box numbered from 1 onwards with a short description of contents. They should give you a copy of this when they're done packing and on the other end the only real check they do is to make sure that the total numbered pieces they unpack is the same that they packed.

Now unpacking is another story. Here's a box from our last move, 5 years ago!

Yeah they provided a bastardized version of that. I literally couldn’t make this up.

They only had poor photo copies, in French, and non descript (I think we had about 60 things labeled “Box”, including the cases of poker chips).

I spent summers as a mover and I guess we were a reputable company because nothing like this ever happened for us but I've heard a ton of horror stories from people.

Damn, man. I'm sorry you and your family are going through this. Moving is stressful enough without having to deal with what you're experiencing. Really hated to see this happen to you.

I've moved overseas a few times during my time in the Army and I agree with everyone who recommended you take pictures of everything. Also, be ready to produce pictures of the missing stuff, especially if they're annotated as packed on the moving list, for insurance purposes.

I hope it all comes out OK in the end for you.

Sorry to see this happen to you. Moving is stressful enough without dealing with mover BS. Hoping your chips make it back safe and sound.

Damn. Well it’s over now and we’ve had time to start unpacking a bit more. Mom has a bit of a bad beat running. Hopefully it pays out well  :ROFLMAO:

Not crazy expensive but great find, her office bar is totaled.

Her mom’s Highschool wood shop project survived for decades, but legs and glass panes got busted up.

Family’s grandfather clock face got nicked up, gouged in the back.

It actually might help! Once I know exactly what’s missing, if they pop up we’ll know exactly where the issue was and who went through everything.

Some folks were interested in updates, that’s why I followed up. Sorry the ending of the story wasn’t exciting as the beginning! I always appreciate the comments and good will.

So disgusted for you. Moving locally in a few weeks and if anything close to even one of these damages occurred to us, I'd be livid.

Ugh. I showed my wife some of the pictures in this thread and she gave me one of these...

We've never done an international move, but we've moved cross-country three times. Once we did it ourselves and it SUUUUUUUCKED, but everything arrived safe and sound. The other two times we used movers: once was perfect with zero issues, the other time we had a few minor dings and 1-2 small missing items but nothing even worth an insurance claim, let alone comparable to this three-ring circus.

Per a recommendation from someone else on this forum, Jenn and I picked up a King-sized memory foam mattress off Amazon at a great price and it's been the best damned bed I ever owned, without having to spend thousands.

PM me your address and I'll ship you one and a frame for it as a housewarming gift to help ease some of the pain of the move and replace the one they fucked up

Well sh*t, that’s beyond generous, I love the community backing and you for this.

It’s a rough time for a lotta folks though, and my wife would kill me. I did share it with her, and she actually added it to our current amazon order!

Don’t worry you’re not in the clear, once insurance comes through I’ll have about 70 questions for computer setup, plus I’ll need to hire someone to design the....housing? Cover?

Like Marisa Tomei, much love to my quirky, funny, balding friend.

Reading this now in the middle of the night in France, lying on the couchbed, and all I can think is that somewhere, some time, you managed to piss off every French person in the world. We've had a few rough goes of things here, mostly due to trains, but I don't think I'd be able to control my anger if I went through what you did.

Honestly, when I heard you were moving to France, shortly after we did, I was looking forward to meeting up with you over here and comparing stories. It seems like we're going through everything completely oppositely. So, uhm, thanks for taking all my runbad. I'll buy your next drink. We square?
