Hey friends, how are you guys doing. Me and my friends have a kind of cheap poker set from Walmart and we look to upgrade it. Do you guys have any recommendations? Thanks a lot !

Depends on how much $$$ you're willing to part with...

The best poker set to start

If you want new chips, in my opinion, the best ones readily available are :
  • CPC (if you want compression mold)
  • Abbiati (if you want plastic or hybrids)
  • BRPro (if you want plain ceramics)
  • SunFly (if you want debossed ceramic chips a.k.a PolyClay)

Matsui is also a good option for plastic.
SunFly is also a good option for hybrids.
Cards Mold from Tina are also a good economic option for debossed ceramic chips).

As stated above, it depends on your budget.

From a new guy’s experience, I recommend going with either China clays from apache poker chips or Ceramics from BR poker.

They got a good range of prices for different kinds of quality of chips on Apache. The dunes feel great and they have a $20 chip for cash games. The slight burnt tire smell people bring up hasn’t bothered anyone in my group. Ceramics from BR poker have a good weight to them, are easy to clean and can be customized.

With a baseline of 500 chips, you can expect to spend around $150 - $400 from these two options. I recommend figuring out the breakdown of how many chips you want in your set/the denominations based on the stakes you’ll be playing to figure out the cost. Get something that won’t break the bank and a design that you’ll be happy with. Good luck!

I am in the same boat and just got a haul of samples from Apache Poker Chips. They've got a good selection of China Clays which are a good upgrade from dice chips. They aren't going to compete with Paulson's, but for a fraction of the price I'm quite happy with the quality.

I'll be going with either the Dunes or Royals for my $0.25-$0.50 game.

Never had the Royals but these Dunes. The Dunes were nice chips. You can't go wrong with them. So I guess it'll depend on your preference : 39 vs 43mm.

For Canada your main source will be StraitPokerSupplies in Toronto. This is a great store with quality product. If you want something more exclusive then stick around on the board but it is true that many folks end up dumping Thousands of dollars into poker chip sets on here. There are more options in the USA but lately shipping has become horrendously expensive and customs seems to love adding on to the hurt. So if you can keep it to a domestic order your costs could be much lower. I have had several of Straitpokersupplies chips and my favorite are the "Prestige line". Its not as fancy as top end Paulsons or such but they feel nice and stack great and at $4/25 there a great deal. The Scrolls and Crazy Horse chips are nice as well (have had both and sold on to others) but at that price point you could also get totally custom ceramics from Alibaba.

I suggest that you consider numbers and denominations you would like for your games whether cash/tourney or both with this great tool/guide
Poker chip set selection tool and guide.

Prestige chips @$4/25 chips, only flaw is the 1 and 10 chips use the same base colours so should not be played together/dirty stacks in poker but just fine for Monopoly and other board games. This is the set I leave out for my daughter to mess with and was bought originally as a traveler, I really like them for some reason

Id recommend the monte carlo chips. They have 3 different versions. They are very cheap, look good and feel good. If youre just playing with some buddies for fun these are a perfectly fine chip that iv used in many home games. If you want a really nice set get samples and do a lot of research

The Dunes are nice, but in my experience, the Royals are far superior—better colors and spots, and they stack significantly better.

Royals are a much better chip and i talked to customer service and they should be in stock soon

If you want new chips, in my opinion, the best ones readily available are :
  • CPC (if you want super high quality casino-grade clay chips)
  • Abbiati (if you want super high quality casino-grade plastic chips)
  • BRPro (if you want quality ceramic-like chips)
  • SunFly Hybrids (if you want quality ceramic-like chip with an actual label)

Matsui is also a good option for the most slippery plastics ever.
Cards Mold from Tina are also a good economic option for fair quality ceramic-like chips at a great price.

Translated the above. ;)

It’s harder, for me personally, to make recommendations if you don’t state a budget.

What kind of games do you play? How many players? Multi table or single table? Cash or tourney or some other?

I was in the exact same boat 3 years ago. I also had unreal expectations since $2 per chip was totally outrageous to me and I thought everyone here is just crazy.

Well, I’m a real sad case because I already done wiped myself out financially and still can’t stop the cash bleed. Tried to quit the hobby and everything else but can’t stop buying chips.

Tread lightly my friend. Get some samples. Try them all, High end plastic, compression clay, and ceramics too. Identify what will work for ya, and sharpen your search.

I’ve also PMd ya with a set I’m thinking to sell, if your budget is unlimited it might be a good chance for ya.

Cheers and welcome, fellow Canuck!

I picked up a Paulson (JACK) set from Apache. Reasonable in price (for me anyway). I picked them because they're great quality and I won't have to upgrade them in the future. They aren't so valuable that I don't want to risk damage using them. Just my personal preference and opinion.

If you don't want to spend $1000 on a set someday, just close your account now and walk away :p.

Okay only sorta kidding. I think for plastics at the less expensive end, the offerings from claysmith are pretty good, even if they are up to $32/100 on Amazon now.

If you want to know more about poker chips than you ever thought you wanted to know, start watching @Hobbyphilic 's videos on youtube.

Welcome to PCF.

Budget, cash or tourney, number of players, clay ceramic or plastic, just to get you started.

Just realized how old the original post is. Guess he actually took this advice without having seen it.
Literally see a post from myself on this thread saying how I was going to buy some China Clay chips and that was going to be perfect.... 2 years later I now have like $8k into chips and no China Clay to be seen... Oh what could have been...

Didn't realize how old the comment is but I love my prestige from Straight Poker. I use them as tournament chips. I'm lucky enough to have a US shipping address my mom frequents so I'm now looking at CCs from Apache. Probably the dunes for my cash set. Currently have the poker knights, kind of wish I went with the cash clubs but it's all good I'll have them replaced in time.
