Hi community-

I'm currently in the process of setting up the first tournament of our new poker league and I'm struggling with the starting stack size, blinds, etc. My current tournament set is a T25 base but it's 1000 chips so we'll be using that. I'm struggling with a few issues/questions. Most of which I'm sure were already covered in the forum somewhere, but I can't find answers specific to my situation. So any help/advice is appreciated:

Details
1. There will be two tables. 10-15 Players. They want to play for up to 6 hours

2. As I said, I'm planning on doing a T25-base game with T25,000 (12/12/5/6/3) starting stacks. We are also using the 25-base because we play a bit of "Name that tune" using my poker playlist during the opening stages of the tournament. The player that guesses song title and artist gets a T25 chip "from the bank". Just for a bit of fun!! As you can imagine this stops when we're at about the 300/600 blinds level.

3. I floated the idea of using bounties last year and the players seem to like the idea of walking away with something even if they're not in the money- so we're using bounties. Buy-in is $20 ($5 of which goes to the bounty).

4. Players also like a rebuy/re-entry option if knocked out early.-So we're using unlimited (T25k) re-buys up to 3 hours into the tournament for $15 ($5 of which goes to new bounty)

5. Sometime later in the season, players would like to introduce add-ons to get the purse a little bigger.

Questions/issues
1. I know a 25-base makes it a "super deep" T25,000 stack. So is there any other way to make tournament last 6 hours with out having a "super/mega/hyper deep" stacks but keeping the T25 base?

2. Because they are such deep stacks and all the other variables (re-buys, bounties, and later, add-ons, etc.) I'm struggling to figure out how many chips will be in play at the end of the tournament and what the purse will look like. So I can't begin to calculate blinds, duration of levels, etc.

As I said, any advice for my clarity/sanity is appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike

Making a two-table tournament last 6 hours is simply a function of stack size, blind schedule, and blind level times. And deep stack vs short stack is of little consequence in this regard -- you can certainly build deepstack turbos and shortstack marathons by manipulating the above parameters to acheive desired results.

Have you decided on your blind structure yet? If so, please post it. In addition, it will be helpful to know the breakdown of your 1000 chip set.

100% just slow the levels down if you are looking for a more "normal" starting stack. In the case of the structure in post #3, just keep them constant, no need to speed up later in the game.

I would probably be doing that because I am a little concerned about putting 3 T5ks in the starting stack and hoping there would be enough change on the table to break when needed. 1 or 2 would be better.

I like your structure mostly except for the double between L8 and L9, I would smooth that out to 400-800, 600-1200 and maybe 800-1600. I would also change L14 to 6k-12k for a smoother ride to 8k-16k. And also the note that 25-75 is an option for L2 to avoid that early double.

Let's say for the sake of argument, you just want to plan a 10K tournament. So 15 players with pretty liberal rebuy rules so let's estimate about an additional 50% or 8 entries. So then you would have 230K in play at the end on the high side. That tournament would end when that total is about 20x BB on average or with a big blind around 12K . (So tournament probably between the 4K-8K or 6K-12K levels in my proposal below)

So my standard levels would be something like this.
25-50
25-75
50-100
75-150
100-200
150-300 (remove T25)
200-400
300-600
400-800
600-1200
800-1600 (remove T100)
1000-2000
1500-3000 (optional quick removal of T500)
2k-4k
3k-6k
4k-8k
6k-12k

So 17 levels to the end of the tournament. At 20 minutes a level you are still at 5h40 plus breaks. I would just leave all the levels at 20 minutes. then you still fit your 6 hours without bulking the stacks and you smooth out some of the higher jumps in your structure.

You can model these calculations after 15K or 20K starting stacks as well. But I think if you you are trying to "drag out" a tournament, just slow the levels down is the right answer moreso than adding to starting stack. Most threads are about making a tournament "fit" or speeding it up. Your problem is actually a good problem to have :).

Personally I think that the rebuys should be full price. Cheap rebuys promote stupid play IMO (which may or may not be something you want to promote).

And in “rebuy” tournaments the bounties are often awarded when the player is truly eliminated (when they cannot or choose not to rebuy). “Re-entry” tournament, where a player has to re-register and may end up at a different table or a different seat usually awards the bounty as soon as the player loses their last remaining chip. Subtle difference.

So maybe consider having the rebuys at $15, but no additional bounty chip, or $20 with $5 toward a new bounty.

Regarding total chips in play, I was going to give some suggestions about the likely number of rebuys and the game ending at blinds around 5% of chips in play (total chips = 20x BB), but @JustinInMN beat me to it, and said it better than I could have.

OH yeah, you have plenty of chips to be flexible here.

20 stacks of 12/12/5/6/x without a sweat, absolutely the right way to go.

If you do stick with 25K stacks though, I would seriously consider getting more T1ks in play, using stacks of 12/12/5/11/2, you would only be able to make 18 such stacks, but again, you said you typically only do 15 players so surely doable.
