I'm putting together my 10k structure for my BBQ tourney next weekend and looking for input/advice. I've lengthened the earlier rounds, to make things run a little longer up front (we are starting at 2pm, and have all day Saturday), and shortened the later rounds when it should be fewer folks at the table...

I'm anticipating 22-25 entries, for a total pot of approximately 270,000 (including on-time chip bonuses).

Thoughts? Concerns? Suggestions?

PS: I intentionally removed the 25/75 level, to add in some other levels later on (such as 250/500), and to cut out those 30-minutes early on and encourage rebuys at the 1st break.

If you are going to go with 20% increases in the structure (500-->600, 1000-->1200, 5000-->6000, 10000-->12000), then I recommend you do it more consistently and add 1200/2400 and 12000/24000 levels as well. This eliminates the later 50% jumps, leaving the remainder of the structure with either 20%, 25%, or 33% increases (averaging 33% overall, due to the 100% and 50% increases at L2 and L3). You can also add a 125/250 level for even more consistency, eliminating the 50% increase at L5.

Replacing the 8000/16000 level with 7500/15000 puts your T25/T100/T500 color-up breaks after L7, L14, and L22, although the event is likely to end no later than L21 (6000/12000) for 22-25 players -- around 8 hours plus scheduled breaks.

Ending re-buys at the end of L4 means last-second purchasers will be getting just 33BB for their money to start L5. A hidden advantage of retaining a 25/75 level is that it increases the re-buy valuation to 50BB after four levels. The longer you allow re-buys, the worse deal it becomes.

Progressively dropping the blind level times is fine -- it works out to 23.4 minutes per level over the course of the tournament. But don't get hung up on 5 minute increments.... it's just another meaningless number. You could start with 33-minute levels and drop 3 minutes every 3 levels, or whatever makes most sense in terms of allowing more early play and still finishing within your time frame with level times that don't feel rushed.

Is this a Freeze-out tournament?

No.

Rebuys/re-entries through first break (which is at the 1 hr mark / after level 4), with Chip Surrender. Here's a quick summary...

At that end of Round 4 we do the following:
- Play one more "bonus" hand after timer hits 0:00.
- After the "bonus" hand is completed at all tables and the first break has begun, ANY and ALL players can choose to, A) proceed with their chip stack as is, of B) engage their "chip surrender" option, relinquish all remaining chips in their stack to the house, and rebuy with a fresh 10k stack.
- After the break it is a traditional "freeze out" tourney.

I was thinking about this myself, and was torn on that decision. Would you suggest keeping the 25/75 level in to provide a better rebuy value at the break?

Yeah, especially since you are offering the Chip Surrender option for people who still have chips. 50bb is plenty to play with. Personally, I wouldn't surrender and pay for just 33bb.

I assume you meant "2 hr mark / after level 4" -- since you're using 30-minute levels?

Done. Putting the 25/75 back in!

Yes! Thank you for the correction!! (y)

@BGinGA, here's where I ended up...

I put 25/75 back in, but left 1200/2400 out. I agree that keeping it in would have made for a smoother blind progression, but I just didn't want to deal with 100s on the table 6 hours in. :p

#lazy :sneaky:

If going that route, I'd also eliminate the 250/500 level -- which will allow you to color-up the T100 chips at the scheduled break after L12.

The first 4 hours would run with about 42% average increases, with the last half of the tournament at around 29% or so.

Still looking at around 8+ hours max plus breaks.
