Hey All,
I won my first set of 300 plastic chips 12 years ago and I’m in a place now where I would like to step up in the world, finally. Like so many before me I’m sure, you can only get so much out of YouTube. So here I am, looking to start working on a set of Cincinnati Horseshoes, Key West’s, or something reasonable of quality. Advice is welcome! Thanks, IndyMav

Hi IndyMav!

Welcome to PCF, you've definitely come to the right place :)

The best advice I can give you is the tried and true "buy sample sets".
It really gives you a sense of what you're buying, something pictures on the internet rarely do.

If you have any questions, the forum's full of helpful people, so welcome and enjoy!

Welcome! Definitely try some samples of whatever you can get your hands on! When the time comes if you have any questions regarding how many chips to order, what breakdown to order your denominations in, or any other questions for your game feel free to post any questions!
Are you looking for a cash set or tournament set?

Hey Mathias,
Thanks for the welcome and advice! I have seen sample sets advertised and they do look like a good way to get a good feel for a set of chips.
Question for you-so I think I’m ready to jump into Paulson’s and thought I had my mind made up on Horseshoes or Key West’s, but the folks selling are all moving up into other sets. Is there a semi-typical progression of where folks start in clays and move up? Obviously there are a plethora of options and that’s why the forum is here but is there a path people take commonly?

Things that would help us help you:

-Budget?
-Tournament or cash game or both?
-Stakes if cash game
-Highest total amount if $ in play if cash game
-Typical # of players?

Other than that, samples, samples, and more samples.

Hi Ford,
Thanks for the welcome and advice!
So here is what I’m looking for and a little back ground: I learned to deal blackjack from one of the guys who dealt at an Indian casino. We did Casino nights regularly at our house and I really enjoy it. As of late I’ve started dealing again for friends and I would like to get a cash game started in my neighborhood.
so I’m looking for a dual purpose set of chips-good for playing teaching/backjack and getting a cash game for hold’em.
I know I want to step up from my $24.99 300 piece set and invest $1 +\- a chip on clays.
so what size setdo you recommend and denom’s? It looks like Cinci/Cleveland Hirseahoes fit the bill but I’m sure there are other options I should consider...

Things that would help us help you:

-Budget? $1+/-
-Tournament or cash game or both? Cash to start
-Stakes if cash game: 25/50 likely
-Highest total amount if $ in play if cash game Not sure exactly
-Typical # of players? I haven’t started yet but thinking 6

Other than that, samples, samples, and more samples.
Hey Legend,
See my notes above-I’m looking for a set I can deal blackjack with and start a cash game in my neighborhood. I’ll start looking for some samples-based on my price range where would you pint me? Thanks!

Not sure about the blackjack part of it. But for a 6-9 person .25/.50 game a pretty typical standard is:

100-120 x .25
200 x $1
200 x $5
Some $20/$25s

There are also some casino sets out there from your home state of Indiana. Argosy and Grand Victoria are a few that come to mind. Not sure if you have a connection to either one in any way but I thought I would toss that out there just in case.

Definitely take a look around at other options, you may find you like a variety of chips. The horseshoes are RHC, so fairly affordable. I'm not super familiar with blackjack, the only recommendation I can make there is be sure you trust your friends/players as there is always a chance that someone can slip a chip in their pocket from one game to another.
Regarding the cash set knowing the number of players and stakes you play are helpful here.
Legend mentioned a good base set, when building a set I prefer to go in the side of purchasing a few more chips than you may neccesarily need in play to cover rebuys or if your games grows/increases buyin.
For an average game (6 to 10 players) I would recommend:
160 x .25
240 x $1
300 x $5
80 x $20/$25
20 x $100 (not neccessary)

I also prefer larger starting stacks which puts a few more chips on the table and less asking for change from other players.

Thanks Sprouty!
The only Casino I had seen chips from Indiana was the old Aztar out of Evansville. I’ll definitely take a look into the Agrosy and Grand Victoria .
Out of curiousity what is your favorite set of chips for cash games that you own?

Not sure about the blackjack part of it. But for a 6-9 person .25/.50 game a pretty typical standard is:

100-120 x .25
200 x $1

That is great info-I’ll keep an eye out for that mix after I get some samples. Thanks!

Hello and welcome!
Thanks-great to be here!

I think I may have read it somewhere but what is RHC?

Here is my current set .
Curious to hear from you experienced PCF guys/gals: what your first and second set of clays? I’m interested where people started and have gone in their chip sets? 8366DAF1-E6C8-4CEB-BFE9-E6714D08493E.jpeg

Welcome fellow Indiana person. It might take time to piece together exactly what you need at your price point, but the chips are out there. Good luck!

Thanks FDL-what part of the state are you from? I am just Northwest on Indy.
any suggestions on what sets I should be looking at pictures in my price range?

Is RHC or THC the more desirable/rare of the two?

I'm up in South Bend / Elkhart / Goshen area.
My guess is you should get RHC chips you like and add labels to make them consistent.
Leaded THC chips are the best, but putting together a set of those, even used, is more than $1 a chip.

Is RHC or THC the more desirable/rare of the two?
Depends on taste. Neither are "rare" persay, THC has more value over RHC, so they generally cost more. THC is also less prone to flea bites since the ring around the hats protects the rolling edge a bit more. The hats in the RHC are against the immediate edge and the slight impression of the hats makes that part of the edge a smidge weaker, so you tend to see them have more nicks and dings along the edge

Thanks Charity-curious I’m what your favorite chips sets are? I’m getting some great ideas from the member so far .
Interesting, okay - Let's see:

Color
I guess I phase in and out of different color combination preferences.

Spot Options
I tend to prefer the 3D14 and 3TA14 patterns, regardless of color.

The 4V418, or other pattern variations resembling the 8A18 / 4TSA18, regularly catch my eye.
But I prefer these in lower quantities or higher denominations, just because I prefer the appearance of wider edge spots in tall stacks instead of the more narrowed confetti-like appearance of the 'claw' edge spots.
Those are my favorites, in any case.
I tend not to like the 8V, but a lot of PCFers religiously commit to that pattern.
A lot people want their edge spots to progressively diversify as denominations increase.
But I'm pretty boring - I typically prefer one or two spot options throughout my set; excluding solids.

Mold
If we're 'taking sides' I would be on Team House Mold.

The MD-76 (see reference) -namely the 'THC' or 'SCV' chips- are considered the gold standard around here.
They excited me too for a few months, but eventually I became sort of numb to that mold.
It's ubiquitous because it's an awesome mold, but it is indeed ubiquitous.
My first casino chip set was a Dover Downs setup that I bought at face value from the casino.
These were MD-76b (see reference) -namely RHC- chips.
I fell out of love with that mold pretty quickly because of the way it ages and the oversized inlay.
I prefer to play with clay at my fingertips instead of that plastic.

Composition
I've come to realize that I can’t go back to unleaded chips, having now built a leaded set.
One PCFer said that he would trade leaded chips for a shot at designing his own Paulson chips from scratch.
I have to agree that a custom set is more sacred than leaded chips, but I don't really have other exceptions.

Overall Sets
I'm in sort of a rut right now with Vegas chips - I just like placing bets with casino chips from Las Vegas.
This is my least favorite bias that I sincerely hope to shake, for sake of this entire hobby let alone my checking account.
It's a stupid bias that just developed by accident.
Outside of casinos, I'm a big fan of the Tophat & Cane Classics.
I had a set for a while that brought me and my group some great times.
Again, I'm pretty boring but I'm a big fan of the Classic's inlay - A lot of people dislike that inlay.
Those games had just the right feel, they felt very professional.
I obviously like the Paulson group buy chips, as well - That's sort of unanimous around here though, for the most part.

Thanks Charity! Not too much info by any means-I can see I haven’t even brushed the surface of what types/kinds of chips are out there!
