Hi all,

I've been debating getting a suede rail with cupholders in the rail for my table but I'm really worried that all the condensation from the canned drinks dripping into the suede would ruin it over time. Not to mention potential spills.

Also, considering the poker sessions can go for long periods of time wouldn't all the suede absorb the sweat and smells over a few months(?) years(?)

Regardless of whether you own such a table or have played on one, I would really appreciate all your experiences!

Yeah good point on sweat on rail and absorb sweat, I have the standard vinyl that Tony uses and that thing looks oily after a nights game, I wipe down my table with Clorox wipes after every game. I think suede would only be good on how good you maintain it staying clean

Urgh that's exactly what I'm afraid of. Suede wouldn't be as easy to wipe down.

@davin Have you played on table with leather rails? How different would you say the feeling is between leather and vinyl?

I rather the leather, my fav table is the Wynn encore poker tables

Had to google that. Are you referring to these?

Hmmmm...

Bala, these are interesting questions.

Lol, I am having "tuxuede" put in for my rail material that will feature cupholders.

Never even considering these things you point out. I was not going to have cupholders until I decided that not having them will leave me wishing I had. I figured having them would never be a mistake. So I put them in..

Remains to be seen what the results will be. I thought I'd put enough thought into my design with my budget but I guess not. I could not afford leather. I think even "real" suede was out of my budget.

I've got "tuxuede" and it's synthetic I believe. Not the real deal. Alot of times, synthetics can hold up better to abuse and spills than real leather or suede.

Similar to when you buy new furniture. Last year, my wife and I bought a new couch. We were talked out of buying leather and were sold a cheaper material called "leathaire". It looked like leather but resists stains and cutting more than real leather. We have a little 3.5 yr old monkey in our home who likes to destroy.

I'll have to hope the same rings true for the poker table rail.

Shoot Bala, I'm worried now. My table is far along now.

I actually have been toying with cupholders in the rail vs having them slide out from under the table. I figured I would get them in the rail since it looks nicer. Then when I began thinking about the practical aspects, I realised that there were some issues and this thread was born.

I've never heard of tuxuede but if its synthetic and more resistant to stains, that's defnitely a good thing. IF you're getting your table done with @T_Chan just drop him a message with your concerns and he'll sort you out for sure.

I'm just about to do this with my table. I'm using artificial seude in black so hopefully that should hide stains etc but I'm going to be spraying it with a waterproofer for some additional protection.

I would never use anything but suede on my home table ever again, it looks awesome, feels awesome, and holds up very well over time. I had the cheaper padded suede on my table for nearly 10 years, just replaced it this year. Honestly it really didn't *need* to replaced, but I was replacing the felt and wanted to upgrade to the texuede. Before and after pics are available here.

Personally I find that I sweat more on a leather rail vs suede (similar to a leather couch, it doesn't breath like the suede does). That being said, my players are all respectful of my home and equipment - it gets a little messy, but they don't come from a construction site filthy dirty to play at my house. I wouldn't put suede on your average casino table rail, completely different element - in that case, I'd want something that's waterproof and easier to wipe down to disinfect.

I've seen many, many more spills on tables with fixed-location cup holders (in rail or racetrack) than I've seen on tables with slide-under cup holders. The ability to put the drink where it's not in the way - for each and every person at the table - trumps all in my book.

I understand @Irish is a big fan of suede (and I greatly respect his opinions re: tables), but I really don't like it for how it feels to me personally. I also would never use an absorbent material of any type on a rail (including leather), nor any color capable of getting easily stained or showing dirt / grime / salsa / sweat / vomit / hooker juice / whatever. Adding cupholders in the rail simply magnifies the potential problems for such materials.

Sounds like good rail covering material. :)

Yes sir!

@Balanar , this was the logical place to get answers to the concerns. @T_Chan was able to address my concerns.

This is a great thread you started Bala! Good luck with your own design.

For the record, it's tuxuede I am getting. It has previously been used on multiple Chanman designs by users on this forum.

I like the idea of luxury materials like leather or suede. I have whisper vinyl and like the feel and that it can be hosed down if necessary.
