Hello Chippers.

In anticipation of my lovely RHC's making their way to UK shores I am looking at storage options. I plan to clean and oil them when they arrive as I think oiled chippies look nicer - I'll be sure to do this properly as I've seen a few threads on how to do it best.

My current ceramic tourney set live in a briefcase style case like the below. The inside lining looks to be have flocked / felt lined so the chips are nice and comfy when tucked up to sleep.
Would this sort of lining cause issues with oiled chips? IE would they attract the black fluff any worse than normal?

My other option is to get some racks and an Acrylic Bird Cage to keep them in - so I can stare at them longingly between home games!
I've seen some cheap bird cage units on eBay but the consensus here seems to be that the racks don't fit Paulson chips all that well. All the recommended racks seem to be from the US.

So some questions around this:

Do the ill fitting racks cause damage to chips over time? or is just an aesthetics thing.
Do the chips have to sit tight in the rack, or can there be a little breathing room (slide front/back)?
Could the chips warp if they are not tight in the rack, or is warping caused by storing in poor conditions?

My 500 chips are coming to the UK in MFRB when all purchasing is complete, along with some playing card sets. Could I fit 5 racks in the same box? Or would this risk damage. If it's fine, I could just buy some racks Stateside, then include them in my US parcel.

Thanks All

First of all, you shouldn't over-oil your chips.
MAXIMUM half a teaspoon of oil on a clean shoe-shine sponge should do for oiling the rolling edges of at least 5 barrels of 20 chips each.
Then, with a soft micro-fibre cloth wipe the edges clean and, if you wish, with the now slightly oiled cloth, oil the perimeters of the faces, avoiding the inlays (one by one: that's pain-staking).

It shouldn't matter which material they come to contact with after doing correctly the above.

Chips being too tight in a rack might result in damage.
Chips being too loose can be addressed with soft and thin chair-leg silencers (don't know which is the correct English or specifically British term, so I 'm improvising in a foreign language:D) used as spacers.

Warping should be the result of extreme temperatures and/or rapid changes in temperature.

Thanks for the info, really appreciated. I think I know what you mean on the chair-leg's - it's a silicone/rubber circle you stick on? makes sense to help pad out the rack if there is any wiggle room  Good to know it's temperature not storage that causes warping.

I'd say get yourself one of these (or something similar). After all, the best chips deserve the best type of case:

Hey dude, yeah there are some cool threads on here showing various builds with these cases. They look bad ass. Do you run an Apache / flight case? I'd still need to pick up some racks for it, which I guess circles back to how good the china racks fit (as shipping is heaps cheaper than the US). Unless you know for some in the UK by chance? :)

edit - this is cheap and cheerful, but again there seems to be a concern over poorly fitting racks. Plus, with the amount I've just spent on chips it doesn't seem right to cheap out on storage! Ebay Bird Cage

Rather the felt version.

FWIW, I have two such birdcages and I love them. And I hate that it is now getting harder and more expensive to get them due to Corona and some sellers not shipping to Norway any more :/

Ah interesting to hear you have these cages and like them! what chips do you store in there? I'll be keeping RHC Paulsons, hopefully they fit OK! I like the cage idea as I have 4 racks of chips ATM, so can store a few decks of cards and a button on the top 'shelf' to make moving chips easier.

The rack are 68.6 mm. I have ASMs there which are a snug-ish fit (67.4 mm). THCs need some padding back (at least the ones I have, 65.8 mm), I don't have any RHCs to test with. But I think the damage mentioned might come from the rack edges where the chips touch the rack.

Also, nothing's preventing you from using other racks inside the cage. The inner dimensions at the bottom are approx. 20.8 x 16.0 cm. You can have a look at my LEGO contraption that lifts the racks as high as possible (while at the same time keeping them stable) and makes a nice storage below.

Thanks for the info, for £30 I may pick one up and see how the chips fit in the cheapy racks. Can always pick up different ones for the case if I need to.

That's a really great idea - raising the racks to make a small storage area. Also, from that thread I clicked and saw the Lego hotel you made - VERY cool :wow:

I work in a casino and have clay paulsons. Put your chips in a rack and store them in a bird cage. You can then stare at them all you want and pull them out to shuffle them and oil them naturally with your fingers. That’s what having them is all about!!!
