Merry Christmas everybody!

New guy starting new home game. Need opinions on set-up:

I’m thinking of a starting blinds at .25/.25 for $20 min buy-in with max $50 buy-in, then moving to .25/.50, .50/1.00, etc.

Starting stack ($25)
.25 - 20
1.00 - 15
5.00 - 2
*Should I buy some .50 chips as well?

With just 1 table and probably 8-10 players a game, breakdown of chip bank that I think may work best:
.25 - 250
***.50 - 150
1.00 - 150
5.00 - 100

Please give this new guy some advice! Trying to head in the right direction, but ultimately I know it’s just going to be fun no matter what! Thanks everyone!

Welcome!

You don't need 250 quarters. 100 usually works. The $1 chip will be the workhorse, and possibly the $5, depending on how your game plays. Don't get 50¢ chips.

This is a typical 600-chip breakdown for a .25/.50 game:
25¢ x 100
$1 x 200
$5 x 200
$20 or $25 x 100 (or 80 of these and 20 $100 chips)

The total bank is $3225 - $5225

You could add maybe 60 quarters to this, and reduce the large denoms, if you think your game will play smaller.

Our group regularly plays .25/.50 pot limit/no limit or $2/$4 limit games with a $100 buy in. We play a lot of split pot games. I can cover this game with
two racks of quarters, six racks of ones and two racks of fives. One thousand chips total. $1,650 total bank. Ones are the work horse and people like to have several stacks in front of them.

Use non-denom for fracs. Then you can play them either as quarters in a .25/.50 game, or 50c pieces in a .50/1.00 game.

250 quarters is too many. Definitely no half dollars. Number of quarters is going to depend on how people like to play. Do people limp a lot, hate making change, and limit their re-buys? 200 quarters then, and fewer $5s or $25s. On the other hand, if the stakes go up quickly and people are topping off/re-buying a lot, you can get by with only 100 quarters and allocate more chips for higher denominations.

I'd say something like

100~200 25c
200 $1
200 $5
25~100 $25
0~25 $100

I just ordered my first cash set with hopes of playing the same range of stakes. After some research, I decided on the following denominations.

.25 x 200
1 x 300
5 x 400
25 x 50
50 x 50

Unless you’ve already decided on the type of chips you want, that’s going to be your next decision. As a noob chipper myself, the Tina Cards Mold chips from the PCF group buys turned out to be perfect for me.

biggest starters mistake I ever made was buying 50 cent chips... 25 cents or unmarked chips x100 forever. Then they can be .25 or .5 or whatever value you want!

For me the best way is:
0.25 - 200
1 - 200
5 - 100
20 - 100
100 - 25
I prefer not to have the denominations marked on the chips so I can change them from time to time

I used to do the 200 frac but we NEVER use them in game besides blinds. Dropped that down to x100.

I really like the
25c x100
1 x 200
5x200
20/25x100

Never had a game get too big for it. Never had too many chips on table. Feels just right for my grp.

Change your starting stack to 12/12/2

I do $25 cash games all the time, I have found that to be the perfect starting stack.

Good luck!

Because of the 25 dollar bill? :ROFLMAO:

On my cash games I dont let anyone buy in for more than $25 on initial buy-in, eliminates early big stack bullying.

After they bust they can buy back in to match biggest stack.
A static initial buy-in is common but we reload anytime between hands for up to half big stack.

I run a monthly cash game with 25¢/25¢ blinds. Our buy-in is $20-$40. Most buy-in for $40, but some still do for only $20. My starting stacks are 25¢-20, $1-20, $5-3. It generally plays pretty small with a lot of limping. We are all casual players and my group likes a lot of quarters. That might not be the same for all groups. I would feel out what your players like and go with that.

Frequent .25/.50 NLHE player with $50 buy-in. I’m the banker more than I’d prefer, so starting stacks are grab and go:

Barrel of .25’s
Barrel of $1’s
Single $5
Single $20

This gets the cards in the air quickly.

Re-buys are mostly $5’s & $20’s.

Sample $50 starting stack is pictured below.
