Stardust Single Chip Limit Set (1 Viewer)

Man thats a tough choice for me. I really like this project and like both the vintage shots and the black stardust labels equally I think. I am of no use to your decision because I would probably go with a vintage shot on one side and the stardust black label on the other side of EVERY chip.

That option actually crossed my mind as well. That would effectively be a 50/50 splash pot look in terms of black and pictures.

Too many options! :)

Ok, here's a tweaked version that is a bit brighter (and slightly sharpened). Hopefully this will translate better into a printed label.

Love the vintage black and white labels. Getting the right mix with the black may be tough. Have you considered using a white or gray background instead of the black but keep the colors?

Thanks!

I did try using a dark grey background during one of my early mockups, but the reduced contrast with the colorful lights didn't look as good (IMO). Haven't tried a white background, to be honest that never crossed my mind. The image is actually derived from a night time photo of the sign, which is why I went with the black background (that and I liked the way the original chips looked with the black inlay).

So here's another idea. I was thinking about adding a few racks of another color chip to use as higher denomination (chips for rebuys to supplement bank). Alternatively, the chips could be used as $1 chips and the rest of the chips could be used as $5 chips for a super awesome 1/2 game with 2000 $5 chips in play (an amount of $5 chips @jbutler would certainly endorse).

So I was thinking since I really like the vintage photo chips, but don't want to totally abandon the idea of the night time sky label, perhaps something like the chips below would work.

Also, just tweaked the bottom middle chip. Didn't like the way it felt off-balance with the extra open space on the right side of the chip. Also removed the street light which was distracting from the Stardust jackpot sign on the left.

Better?

In fact, if you put a tictactoe grid over a picture, the lines represent where an photos object/subject should sit. It is more aesthetically pleasing. Love the change.

Thanks! I couldn't quite hit the rule of thirds on this one because of the circular crop and height of the main Stardust sign (without shrinking it too much), but this is a lot closer and (to my eye at least) looks a lot better.

I had another idea about adding versatility to this set.

For times where I might want to use the 2000 Stardust chips as $5 chips for a big bet game, what do you think about adding a few racks of Bellagio $1 chips?
  • The house molds are very similar in look and feel
  • It goes with the Vegas theme
  • The inlays are both grayscale and don't clash
  • The blue and coral chips go very well together IMO, as do the spots

Of course this will inevitably lead to a full Vegas mixed house mold set, likely with Tropicana/Dunes high denomination chips, but I'll figure that out later. :)

Thoughts?

Bellagio FTW. If you feel adventurous maybe a rack of ones from every casino on the strip!

I'm sure that's exactly what Mrs. Bentax (who hates casinos) would love to do while we're out there for four days

I'll have to save the getting a rack from every casino adventure for the next time I'm out there alone (or at least next time I'm out there with like-minded travel companions)

How about Tropicana? You can relabel those with old b&w images

Do you mean the one below? That's got some potential, but I think I prefer the colors and spots of the Bellagio chips for this set.

Besides, I need to save Tropicana for the higher denom chips for when I use this as a limit set.

Why not find some additional stardusts to relabel?

That was/is the default plan. I already have 4 racks of white SPM $1 chips I could just relabel. Just exploring other ideas. Got the idea because I've always liked the Aria/Bellagio $1 chip and realized the mold is very similar to the SPM mold. Plus, I thought the blue worked well with the coral/pink chips.

offer them for trade then, are there other stardusts colors that would work better?

Nothing really that's reasonable in terms of cost. There's a sweet looking blue chip that would work great, but it's a high denom tournament chip that's scarce and expensive. The only potential option might have been the yellow T1000 chips, but even those had a price tag that was a lot higher than I'd be looking to spend.

In the meantime, I could always finish cleaning these two racks. Despite no house mold, they would work in a pinch ;)

^ Those would make good relabeled quarters for a $1 bellagio / $5 stardust set (when using the no-denom stardust chips as fivers), and you'd only need a rack.

The 2nd Ed. Trop house molds don't go well with any of the other three; same with the thc flamingos. There are better matching iconic Vegas house mold $20s/$25s out there (and you don't need many, so using live chips is even a legitimate option). The Aria $20 or $25 would be my first picks, but here's a bunch of other candidates:

I hadn't even thought of getting a quarter for this set, but that Tropicana could work really well for that purpose along with the $1 Bellagio and "$5" Stardust chip.

I agree about both the 2nd Edition house mold and THC Flamingo chips not going very well with the Stardust house mold. I posted them as potential options in a pinch since I have 200 of the $1 Flamingos and 80/20 of the Tropicana $25/$100. And it's not just the molds, the condition is too far off as I'd like them to be as close to the mint Stardust chips as possible. This may make finding a couple racks of the (near mint) Bellagio chips more difficult, but I'll see what I can do.

As for an upper denom, I'm not really too worried about that. If I used the Stardust chips for a big bet 1/2 game, it's not likely I'd need more bank than the 10k in $5 chips. Whether 2000 chips on the table would be too many for non-chip lover, well that's their problem. The upper denominations would be more for value holders when using the Stardust chips as a single denom limit set. So if they were used as $1 chips in a $3/$6 limit game, I'd expect we might need some extra bank beyond $2000. But I'm not sure I'd want to tie up several thousand dollars in live $20/25 chips. I'd probably be more inclined to pick up a rack of $20/25 Dunes as I think they fit the theme well and the mold would look nice (and at about 20% the price of live chips).

So it looks like someone stole my idea for limited edition Stardust vintage picture chips! Actually, it turns out that someone was the casino itself, 11 years ago. Oops!

Turns out some of those vintage LE chips I mocked up had already been produced before as actual Stardust LE $5 chips. Not that this will necessarily change my plans, and to be honest, I prefer some of my images anyway. Oh well, guess these won't be quite as "limited"
