Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker (1 Viewer)

I like the tiered approach, here's mine:

Tier 1
  • A New Hope - This one is my favorite, I can watch this over and over and over and it never gets old. Fantastic story telling with an incredible score and great characters
  • Empire Strikes Back - This is the best movie overall and has some of the coolest sequences in the series (Hoth / Dagobah / Luke vs Vader), but after the big reveal, it looses a hair of steam for re-watches. It's really close though
Tier 2
  • Return of the Jedi - Campy but a lot of fun. Iron bikini for the win ;)
  • The Mandalorian - had to throw this in there, I thought this series was fantastic! Great script - very entertaining.
Tier 3
  • Revenge of the Sith - aside from the ridiculousness of the opening sequence and the lack of the vader march score when Anakin turns, I enjoyed this one. Ewan McGregor's best performance.
  • Rogue One - Gritty war movie with a different tone than the rest of the franchise. Visually I thought this was the best movie since the original trilogy, especially the entire Scariff sequence.
  • The Force Awakens - Very predictable/familiar and zero creativity from a story telling standpoint, but this was fun and I enjoyed the 3 main new characters a lot. It's what the series needed after the prequels
  • The Rise of Skywalker - Fun, glitzy but ridiculous. Some really cool sequences. The best part about this movie is that it essentially undoes everything in the Last Jedi
  • Solo - Better than I expected but the guy who played Han was pretty bad.
Tier 4
  • The Phantom Menace - The first star wars movie that I looked at my watch in the movies. Convoluted story that still doesn't really make sense. It has gotten a little better watching over time once the other movies were out, but not much. IMHO the single biggest mistake in the prequels was "killing off" Darth Maul.
  • Attack of the Clones - Somehow managed to add to the convolution from Phantom Menace. Bad script and horrible acting pretty much all around, even Sam Jackson couldn't help it lol
Tier 10000000
  • The Last Jedi - Dumpster fire - one of the worst movies ever made. I don't even consider this a Star Wars movie.

Spot on!, Let me add :

Tier 9999999
  • Howard the Duck - Yes, I am saying watch this movie within the context of the Star Wars Universe. Yes, I understand that makes abso-fucking-lutely zero sense, and yet, somehow, it still makes more fucking sense than TLJ. Fuckety-fuck-fuck-fuck, I HATE TLJ. The hatred that surges through my soul when I think of TLJ makes Emperor Palpatine seem like Baby Yoda. I'd love to meet Rian Johnson some day, and feed him is teeth anally.

Interestingly, Last Jedi is one of the Star Wars movies that I felt has gotten better and better with each subsequent viewing. Solo I enjoyed on the first viewing, but I've had more and more issues with it as I've seen it again. At this point, i'm kinda done with it.

I haven't rewatched 9 for a while, will have to do so to see if it holds up.

Howard the Duck is an unappreciated gem of a movie. I mean, you've got interspecies romance, dark overlords, talking ducks........the three key ingredients in a successful movie franchise!

I have a lot to say about all the other movies, but since this is a thread for Rise of Skywalker....

WINS (for me)
-I loved the real dark Sith stuff. It was always in the expanded universe, and hinted at in movies, but I loved finally seeing it on screen. The temple, cult, throne, etc
-Rey and Kylo were a fun dynamic through the 3 movies. A lot of it could have been handled better, but it was a very believable struggle and some great fights
-Aliens. That weird celebration they ended up in was so out there, but felt like something that fit in to the same galaxy a the original trilogy, unlike the casino in TLJ and most of the prequel stuff
-Hans unexpected cameo
-The final showdown with Palpatine (on the ground)

FAILS
-The over dramatic wiping of 3PO’s memory, that didn’t matter anyway.
-NOT killing Chewbacca. I mean, I’m not saying they SHOULD have off’ed him, but that was such an emotional moment that was really well done. Then to immediately double back on it and not even need him the rest of the way. Rey’s ‘Chewie!’ Scream was legit
-Poe / Finn. I want to like them so much, I just feel they could have been used so much better
- Luke’s ‘I was wrong’. I get it to retcon TLJ, but there has to have been a better speech or sentence there
-The ship part of the final battle. Just wasn’t there, and the horse thing was really weird

Rey can levitate 20 rocks!!!

Rey can pull a star ship down from the sky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rey can't get herself or her friends out of "quicksand" ????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

No one involved with the movies sees this as a gaping plot hole ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Along with a few dozen other issues. This movie was not the worst of the bunch, but still definitely not good.

The new convenient and complete nonsensical force powers on display in Rise demonstrates some of the laziest writing I have ever seen. I mean the force is convenient writing too to begin with. But they didn't even try to make any sense of it in Rise.

We need Rey to do X!

Okay, its a force power now.

We need to violate the laws of spacetime so Rey and Kylo can work together.

Force power.
