Has anyone noticed any issues with stacking racks of chips for a long period of time? Say 5 racks high.

I have kept my personal set of ASM Key Wests in racks stacked five high in two bird cages for the past few years. No issues seen so far.

That's good. I didn't think it would but I had to ask. Thanks

Great to know, thanks guys.

I found this thread looking for just this answer. One of my birdcages has racks with lids so I've never worried but I can't find any of those for sale for my new chipset and was worried the chips would deform under the weight of each other. I guess that's how casino's store their millions of chips though, isn't i! :)

Hey Tommy, my problem is I'm in Australia. Stuff is just harder to come by down here :(

Or shipping from USA is too high for cheap products like racks.

Needing clarification now - are you guys talking about racks without lids being OK to stack - putting weight on the chips themselves?

I should have noticed that.
I've done a few re-ships for some of our international members. Basically repacking a bunch of small packages into a Med ot LG flat rate box. If you are ever in a position where I can help (cost effective for you), just let me know.

Yes, racks without lids are fine to stack. I've seen no issues with my chips. I've stored them 5 high.

Wow, that's fantastic, Tommy! Thanks a bunch and I'll keep that in mind!

Thanks for clarifying the rack question too. Puts me at ease :)

Cheers,
Jeremy.

Only caveat is don't stack racks in high heat conditions (like in your oven, near a window, or in an automobile in the summertime). The combination of high heat and pressure can deform chips -- and it's worse if the chips are loose in the racks (vs a perfect tight fit).

Under normal conditions (like indoors), storing stacked racks of chips poses no problem -- but again, a tighter fit is better for minimizing the possibility of damage of any kind. Get racks that fit your particular chips.

The thing to remember is that although stacking five racks high means the weight of four racks is on the bottom rack, the bottom rack is spreading that weight across 100 chips. In theory, each chip is really only bearing the weight of four other chips (plus 1/100 the weight of four racks.)

The catch is that the chips are not 100% uniform in size... so a chip that is slightly wider than 39mm is going to bear a lot more weight than its neighbors. Perhaps 8 or 16 chips of weight - or more if it's very wide of if there's something else in the rack under the chip.

So the oversized chips will bear more weight and be crushed down to size. Win.

Given how the molds and dies are loaded, chips don't actually vary in that dimension. Thickness varies, the diameter does not.

If you have a high chip, it's almost certainly because of something foreign in the tray below the chip.

(Note: mixed casino sets and/or sets with different stages of wear on different denoms may be a different story.)

I was so paranoid about this, I never even tried. That is why I store everything in aluminum cases horizontally and never went with bird cages (yes, I know casinos store them that way......they also rack check the SHIT out of their chips and do not really care about their condition). Just too paranoid and sick with the illness to chance the unthinkable! warp
