I'm traveling for work next week (7/4-7/8), staying close to the airport, so near Hollywood and Ameristar. I looked on Bravo, and the two rooms seemed dead - few tables running.

I know there's some other STL casinos, but just figured these would have a bit more traffic. Just looking for some 1/2 or 1/3 unless rake is crazy high out there.

I don't live in the area anymore, but here's a quick summary:

Lumiere/Horseshoe: This casino just rebranded as a Horseshoe a few months ago. It may be worth checking out to see what kind of deals they are running. It's also a fairly good location if you have never been to the area and want to check out St. Louis. This casino is located near the Mississippi River and located by the Arch and some other landmarks. This casino used to probably be the softest room because the casino was usually busy and a lot of casuals would sit down at the table on a busy night, but it wasn't necessarily the best overall room.

Hollywood Casino: Probably the least "nice" of the casinos but the poker room always seemed relatively busy and well run. Might be the best room, but the worst overall casino(but it isn't a bad casino either).

Ameristar Casino: Always a well run property. At one point it had a really good poker room, but I haven't lived in the area in 7+ years. Might be the best all around casino in the area if you were looking to stay, dine, play, etc....

Hollywood and Ameristar are located near each other on the NW side of the city (Ameristar is in St. Charles), while the Lumiere/Horseshoe is right downtown near Laclede's Landing where there are hotels, dining, and entertainment.

So I just checked 2+2 and some local forums, the consensus right now seems to be:

#1. Ameristar, especially for cash games
#2. Horseshoe? - jury is still out on how much this property will emphasize poker
#3. Hollywood - COVID seemed to put a damper on things, however this seems to be the spot for more tourney options

Thanks. Hopefully I'll get in two sessions over the four days. Definitely planning on checking out both Ameristar and Hollywood, even if it's just for an AC walk and meal. Don't think I'll be able to fit in a tourny sadly.

Ouch... Just landed
1 table at hollywood and 4 at Ameristar

  • Ameristar - (St Charles) has the best cash options, most games by far 1/2, 2/3, 2/5, 5/10 NLHE, 1/2/5 PLO, O8 on weekends, 3/6 LHE daily mornings, 20/40 LHE/Omaha twice a week.
  • Hollywood - (West) will run 1/2 NLHE and higher (4/8 OE Sundays). Only choice for tournaments (Thursday thru Sunday)
  • Horseshoe - (Downtown) 1-2 tables 1/3 NLHE and most of the time 1 table of 1/2/5 PLO
Good Luck!

I live in the area and am planning on starting to play live fairly regularly soon, so this summary will come in handy.

For whatever it’s worth, I’ve always heard Ameristar is the best in general, with Lumiere (now Horseshoe) being juicy on weekends when the drunks show up later at night to gamb0ol. YMMV.

I just glanced at the game a couple times last nightchecking on my list status. Being an East Coast small timer, there was a ton more money on the table. I'm not certain, butt probably had max 75% largest stack running.

Will check out Ameristar sometime.

99 Hops (in casino), different cheese steak interpretation with brisket and beer cheese. Bandana's BBQ (near airport) pretty good.

Well, the play was interesting yesterday. I got to the room, there were two tables running at first, 1/2 300 max and 2/3 match largest. I bought into the 1/2 game. 5xBB straddles from the button are allowed.

I tried early to bluff a guy that later I'd learn had a broken fold button. Never managed to get above even. The game changed after the 2/3 game broke making it 15-25 to see a flop. Very little 3 betting, and it was often tiny if done. I was fairly card dead.

-32 for the night. I didn't like my play at all, too passive except for willingness to bluff rivers. Example ATdd, call 22 pre, 5 ways, flop 752d, call 22 3 or 4 way, 7525dd, call 22 heads up (folds behind), 75252, bet 200 when checked to...

Highlights from the game included the classic eventual 3 way all in pre with Q4, JTss, J9off, for around 50BB each.

Guess a bunch of staff went to horseshoe. Room closed at 10 as there was never a list deeper than 1. Other rooms ran at 2 tables most of the night. Looked like Ameristar was light staff as well since there were 14 on wait-list

There is no argument that StL is hurting for dealers. Hollywood lost their poker room manager a few weeks ago & a few dealers as well. Not unusual for Hollywood's weekday games to die out "earlier", especially the day after the fourth of July.
