Hey All,

First off, new to the site. Love it so far! Everyone seems so super nice!! :)

While watching some cash games on YouTube, I came across Daniel Negreanu talking about adding a different element to poker...special powers.

Now bear with me...

Basically what he was thinking is that each player has a few cards or chips that represent different things. One may be "change the last card dealt" or "switch one of your cards with your opponents" or "end the hand right now." Once you use a power it's gone, and I'm heavily leaning towards using these in a tournament setting.

I'd love to hear what y'all think of this and I'd love to put it into practice and see how it goes (anyone around Cleveland want to give this a go??) :)

What other powers would you want to see? How are fair ways to possibly renew powers? What other details would you want to see?

Such a fun way to look at poker!! :)

As host, I'd allow special powers, so long as I get the one that allows me to simultaneously collect all the chips in play from each player. Sounds fair enough to me. :)

Welcome, thats quite an interesting idea. Many tournaments often use "show em" chips, where they can be used at the end of a hand where a losing player (or another person not even involved in the hand) are curious of one persons cards and can request to show them face up.

I'm pretty sure I would hate this. Off the top of my head id have to say a power card would have to be played before any action on a street.

For example if you flop top set against my open ended straight flush draw it would be completely unacceptable to get all the chips in and end the hand before the turn comes.

Even further I would have to say an all in kills the powers for the remainder of the hand... ie in the above hand you can't kill the hand after a blank on the turn either.

Have you a link to the video?
Unfortunately the videos are like an hour or two long, and it's broken up over a few different segments...if you look up "Poker Night America 7/8" and "poker night America 8/8" it's a home game with Daniel, Antonio, Laak, several others. Daniel brings it up in 7 and continues the conversation in 8.

I absolutely love the meta game that would go on here. It would change bet sizes, strength of hands, so much more strategy on so many more levels. Ahh! This is so neat to think about. :)

My group completely panned the idea of using a show 'em chip. I like the idea of special powers in a special game with the right people.

I wish @bergs had made the mythical Truman "show 'em" chip that J5 wouldn't do the art on. [emoji1]

I hosted a celebrity poker event at an anime convention once. We shuffled 3 jokers into the deck. When a joker came into play, the audience got to declare what card it was. Not really a "Special Power", but it did heavily influence how people played when the card in their hand would be either awesome or complete crap, depending on the whims of the audience (and they wouldn't know which until showdown).

Sure, there are some I'd love to see:

Omaha hi/lo after the river I play my Courage is High card so there is no low and I scoop.

After I have the fish all-in on the turn at nlhe with my 2 pair vs his top pair and we agree to run it twice I can play my Protection From That Online Bullshit card to fade his (maximum) 5 outs that he binks both times to scoop. Meh, that was 4 days ago, I'm over it. :p

I have seen that same video. I think it's a very interesting idea, and could work really well in the right situation. I've thought a bit about how it might work in a game..here's a few ideas:

- 'Power poker' should probably be played for smaller stakes than a 'normal' game. Having a power used against you essentially steals the value you built in that hand, so it needs to be friendly so there's no hostility/stabbings.

- Powers should be represented by a physical object. Yes, like a chip. Group buy, anyone? I think this is important so there's not a need to enforce verbal commitments for power usage.

- The powers need to be equal-ish. "Scoop the pot with the worst hand" is too good..there is no chance of loosing. Power might not be the right word..they are special privileges. A better privilege might be "Exchange 1 card for a new one from the deck". That keeps the game more or less intact, but still gives you an advantage.

- Pots involving the use of a power should be infrequent. Perhaps once or twice an hour. This could be simply accomplished by having some event earn players a 'power'. For example, having the same hand as the winner and still loosing (AAA vs 222, say).

I would have to insist on at least one (preferably more) "Fuck That" chip that has the power to cancel out any other chip played.

Hahahaha. A "counter" chip was definitely on my mind, but I think just calling it "FTS" makes it way better!!! :)
