We are playing $0.25/$0.50, $20 buy ins. Seven handed - got four regulars on the road or sleeping with new women. It is about four hours in when this happens.

There is a straddle to $1, two limps bring us to Hero who raises to $5 total holding :ah: :ac:

We end up three handed with $16.75 in the pot.

Flop is :9s: :6s: :4c:

One check then one of the wild guys at the table pound $20 out as a bet - it is one of his bluffing tells. Hero jams all in, about $45 more. Villain tanks maybe ten seconds and then calls.

Hero tables his aces. Villain tables :ks: :jc: Ok - that is about as good as it gets, villain needs runner runner or hero stacks the biggest pot of the night. To be fair, villain's has is worth 7.5% equity so he will win one time in thirteen or so.

The run out is runner runner spades, giving villain the winning spade flush.

Villain goes bust over then next ninety minutes and Hero doesn't get hardly any of his chips back . . .

The fact this thread even exists suggests the good Dr doesn't take these type beats very often... many of us consider these to be fairly standard ;)

There are 2 tricks to poker:
1. Getting all in with your opponent drawing dead.
2. Getting all in from behind and sucking out.

Just get back to these solid strategies, and you'll be back on a winning path.

Thanks captain obvious. But I'm not sure anything in the thread even vaguely suggests the good doctor thinks he will call.

1) Dr. Strange obviously knows this villain pretty well. He's played with him enough to be sure of Villain's bet sizing tell.
2) Dr Strange is a good enough player to know you bet for two reasons, to get worse hands to call and better hands to fold.

So if Dr Strange knows all of these things and still shoved, once should surmise Dr. Strange expects there is a good chance that villain will call.

Shrug. The bluff-call is a pretty rare move in poker, never met anyone who uses the move regularly.

I have a friend who did this move. She would make a call thinking she was bluffing, but was afraid to bet with the same hand.
