Solve For Why discuss poker chips [Vlogcast] (2 Viewers)

Cliff notes. Dedicated main event chipset, estimates ran 100k to $1m. Price per chip way low for clay. Mentioned 0.3 with bulk dropping it even lower. Colors too similar in some cases.

I tried to crunch some numbers, but other than knowing a 60k starting stacks and assuming 1500 runners with 5 day 1s, I stopped.

If you have 8000 players in the Main, and each player starts with say, 30 individual chips (could be less, but probably not more), you're looking at 240,000 chips (2400 racks) before any color ups. If we knew the breakdown of the starting stack we could come up with a reasonable estimate of total chips. Anyone know last year's breakdown?

I think @Windwalker posted his WSOP ME starting stack last year (his photo, will remove if he'd prefer)

Structure (confirms 60k start stack): https://www.wsop.com/pdfs/structuresheets/structure_4865_19798.pdf

(fwiw, I thought it might be fun to host a "mini main" using the same breakdown and structure, so I noted these last year)

Ok, quick back of the napkin should be under 250,000 individual chips then. Maybe more if they bought to accommodate 10,000 players.

I'll give it a listen, but after being on PCF for two years I've learned that nobody outside of PCF knows a damn thing about chips, and anything they might have to say is only good for a laugh.

Oh, hey, there's a term I hadn't heard before - "Going North". Taking chips out of your pocket and putting them on the table. Shouldn't ever be a problem in a cash game but obviously is a sign of some shenanigans in a tourney.

Completely true. The best is when you're sitting next to someone at the casino poker table and they are talking to you about their home game.

And then you ask, what chips do you use? And then they show you some 13.5g monstrosity proudly and ask "great chips, huh?"

And then when you try to explain chips to them they double down on how great theirs are. I don't even know why I try...

My prediction for ME is that it will use the beige inlay tri-moon set that has been used for all 10k+ buy-in events. All structures utilizing these sets have had buy-in x6 as the starting stack, which reduces incentive to pocket chips in a lower event and reintroduce at higher event. There are also multiple color versions of all 25k+, appears to be 3x of each, this also increases security.

I guess we will find out on sunday

I’ve heard adding-on mid hand (blatant cheating) referred to as “going north”, never heard of it for tournament.

I wonder how prevalent this is at Aria, they use one chipset for all their tournaments these days including the high rollers (like the stairway to millions festival), they do not vary starting stacks much and there’s been cheating allegations popping up in that scene.

It’s like begging for this issue to have concurrent tournaments with different buy-in levels using same chips in the same room where players are busting one and entering the other constantly

Yeah, even if they bring out some unique higher denoms, I see little reason to use unique 100s, 500s or even 1000s.

Lol at Berkey thinking it's possible, because of buying in bulk, that the chips would cost a penny each.

Not true. Most cash games don't have uncapped buyins, so "going North" is still cheating. In a cash game, if you feel you're a better player, you want to have more chips that others to ensure you can win the maximum. A local poker pro was banned from a card room because he was caught habitually adding chips to his stack.
