At my home game last month, we had gotten to the river card with 2 players remaining. The river card turns and first to act makes a significant raise. The other guy in the pot seems to be ready to fold (it's not a clear action), but the person to his left (who has apparently seen his hand) attempts to signal to him not to do so. Before she could verbalize anything, I tell her that she can not do that, but at this point, the guy double checks his hand an realizes he had hit the bottom part of a straight.
The guy claims that he had no intention to fold, but I believe otherwise. At the end of the hand, I remind the woman that the game is one player to a hand, and that she can not discuss anything regarding a current hand in progress. I also apologized to the guy who made the bet and ultimately lost the pot. As this is my game I feel responsible for what happened.
Mind you, the two people in question are very new to the game. I expect these situations to happen with new players, but that doesn't make it fair to the guy who lost a pot that I believe he would have otherwise won.
Is there anything that you would have done differently?
