At my home game last month, we had gotten to the river card with 2 players remaining. The river card turns and first to act makes a significant raise. The other guy in the pot seems to be ready to fold (it's not a clear action), but the person to his left (who has apparently seen his hand) attempts to signal to him not to do so. Before she could verbalize anything, I tell her that she can not do that, but at this point, the guy double checks his hand an realizes he had hit the bottom part of a straight.

The guy claims that he had no intention to fold, but I believe otherwise. At the end of the hand, I remind the woman that the game is one player to a hand, and that she can not discuss anything regarding a current hand in progress. I also apologized to the guy who made the bet and ultimately lost the pot. As this is my game I feel responsible for what happened.

Mind you, the two people in question are very new to the game. I expect these situations to happen with new players, but that doesn't make it fair to the guy who lost a pot that I believe he would have otherwise won.

Is there anything that you would have done differently?

Nope. Stuff like that is going to happen with noobs. Where are you at in Louisiana? I'll be in the Lake Charles area next month.

I think that you handled it well. One warning, then gone. Not invited back. It is cheating, whether they think so or not.

So if I understand your description of what happened, river card hits the board, first to act bets, then the other heads up player calls at the advice of a person sitting at the table that is not an active player?

Whether they may or may not have folded is irrelevant. It's not as if he tried to muck and then retrieved his cards at his friend's insistence, right?

First violation of the 'one player to a hand' rule usually constitutes a warning. If the offender is new to the game and it's a friendly home game, respectfully explaining that commenting or dispensing advice is a breach of etiquette. Most reasonable people only need to be told once.

If something like that happens again, tell the active player not to let anyone sweat their cards.

But do remind the “helper” at the next game that she can help read any hands that are fully tabled for all to see, and help ensure bets are legal/correct.

Cash game or tournament?

You handled it fine. If it is a tournament I’d explain to the person that future actions like that can result in being suspended for an orbit or more. Be polite, but firm.

If it happened in a cash game for decent money it can get ugly fast. So making sure everyone knows the rules will hopefully prevent that from happening. And tell the active player to protect his hand from being exposed. Did he flash them to the other person or was she trying to spy?

If he was showing his cards he should be reprimanded too. Players don’t do that then call!

@Rhodeman77 cash game. Significant money for the level of the game on the table. Fortunately for me, the guy who lost the hand is a really good guy and he understood what happened. Good point, I should have told the guy to keep his hand protected. I seriously doubt they were showing cards to each other because has I caught it, it would not have gotten to this point.

@AnteAndy Sounds good to me!

@saleen121212 if you go to the golden nugget, PM me, I may head your way. I use an app called Poker Atlas and it lets me know about tourney’s, cash games and tables in specific areas. It’s pretty cool.

1) the person to his left is not in the game, so STFU
2) protect your hand also implies not let the other people have a look to them
3) cards stay at the table (enforces #2)
4) one player per hand

You handled it well

However

As this is my game I feel responsible for what happened.

this is not correct, It happens because 2 of the players involved are new to the game and did not yet understood rules and ethics. You are not responsible of what it happened, you have i did well managed the situation.

I downloaded Poker Atlas, but you have to create an account. Does it do anything that Bravo Poker Live doesn't do?

Give her a stern warning.

It's already unanimous, but you handled it well. You don't want to go overboard. But you don't want it happening anymore.

If we're too soft, next thing you know one person's saying "low straight? He probably has top pair. Call".

That's where the "keep your cards to yourself until you've 100% verbalized you're folding" rule will help.

@Remy ive honestly never heard of Bravo Poker. I just started using Poker Atlas and never saw a need to create an account.

I wonder why it's forcing me to sign in/up? Bravo has real-time updates on what cash games are going, the number of people on the waiting list, weekly tournament info, and promotions like bad beat jackpot.

For example, it says that the Golden Nugget LC has 2 tables of 1-3NL running, 5 people on the waiting list, and 11 people waiting for limit holdem

@Remy Ohhhhhh nice! I’ll check that out. It’s also gonna depend on which apps the casinos use cause if they don’t participate, it’s useless.

@Remy Also, it did make me setup an account. I guess I sign up for so many things that I didn’t realize that was one.

I understand that these are noobs so they should be given the benefit of the doubt that it wasn't cheating. However, I've played with regulars that will show cards to their neighbour while still deciding on their action (obviously neighbour is out of the hand and 9 times out of 10 it's a heads up pot), but I don't like it even though I'm not suggesting it's cheating but there could be a read of a reaction from the neighbour when they see the hand. I'm thinking about adding a house rule of "if you show your hand while still live it is dead".
