Hi Everyone,

Firstly... long thread :p

I'm looking to buy my first set of nice chips and could use some help. I took the advice of members here bought several samples that caught my eye, and I'm really glad I did.

For my first go at putting something together, I'd like a Tourney set for 6-16 players, and if I have enough regulars I'd love to add a custom cash set.

The breakdown:
T25 x 160
T100 x 160
T500 x 80
T1K x 140
T5k x 60

And I like this blind schedule: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/blinds-for-a-25-50-tournament.37805/post-698374

The ask is... any advice for a first set? Including breakdown and chip choices/purchasing.

My expectation is that most would advise to buy the "best" set I can afford, or like the most.

I have a pretty flexible budget, but I prefer not spending over $1 a chip until I have a group of regulars (I'm attempting to recruit from the whiskey club haha). The challenge has been... because I bought a small sample of Jack Casino Paulson Chips and they just feel so good...

I'd prefer to buy a new set (or lightly used from a local).

Anyway... here are my thoughts of the samples I received, and hopefully will help some fellow newbies too.

Majestic
They actually sound pretty good when stacking (correct term?), but the tactile feel is very poor. They feel chalky, plasticky, and leave some sort of residue on my hands. I'm actually afraid of my guests touching these chips, eat some potato chips... then keel over. Passing on these.

CPC
Maybe it's a lack of knowledge, but I was actually a little disappointed with the CPCs. Could it because I purchased mold samples? They are quite "pingy" when stacked. Otherwise the designs are beautiful, fit/finish is awesome, and I like the weight. But right now, I can't justify the price for these, unless I go full custom imo.

Tiki Kings and Dia de los Muertos
I quite like these despite the even more plasticky stacking sound. The weight is pretty good, finish is not bad, and I think the designs are pretty fun. Sure they are very cartoony, but they are awesome price-wise, easy to replenish, and if I change my mind they seem easy to resell. My first choice.

Paulson Elite
These chips are very well made, and sound exactly as I'd expect them to. I really like these apart from the white edge marks and the design+colors. They seem like they are reasonable well priced, and again, easy to replenish. I have kinda a hard time getting over the design though, and the fact every single chip has white edges and will be nasty if they get a lot of play.

Jack Casino
Reaaaallly like these - the design, feel, weight, it's got it all. I tried not to like these... but I do. The major downside is I find them pricey and the new sets only seem to have one breakdown. I expect some of the older Paulsons to feel similarly, and I'm starting to see the appeal. I rather not spend $2k for 1k chips, but certainly are nice.

So... any advice for a new chippy?

:)

43mm Sun-Fly hybrid ceramics (25mm recess version). Less than 75c/chip shipped, look and feel great. Group buy thread getting posted soon.

This is what I am doing when I get my customs. I have sample set of these and they are really cool. Though you will have to tweak your breakdown a bit because of a x25 quantity restriction.

150/150/75/150/75 (of T25/100/500/1K/5K) still gives you 18 stacks of 8/8/4/7 in a 600 chip set. With enough T5k to cover 23 extra 10k rebuys.

Make sure you have a few extra of each denom to cover damages and losses, and enough T500 to colour up all your T25 and T100.

8/8/4/7 is the minimum starting stack, low price ratio. Others prefer 12/12/5/6 for less change making, but larger stacks means higher initial cost.

Some thoughts/comments.

These are great beginner chips for the price. My only complaint is how slippery they are. Even looking at them wrong seems to knock them over. Someone did post a thread about using fine grit sandpaper on them to help their stacking ability though, so it seems there is a workaround.

The residue you saw is the factory dust. This is common on all china clays and CPC chips. Searching the site about oiling chips will show you how to deal with it.

The same manufacturer that created the majestic's is currently in the process of creating 43mm versions of the chips. They are currently in presale at the link below. Not sure what the current price is but believe it is still around .50c/chip. 43mm chips have a strong following, myself included, and would highly recommend checking these out.

I have to admit that I am very biased when it comes to ceramics. They are not for me and I always recommend against them..............unless they are the 43mm Sun-Fly hybrid ceramics. These are amazing in my opinion and well worth the price. They are basically ceramics chips with an recess to allow for a sticker label. Not sure what the current planned group buy is but would highly recommend waiting for that to be posted and check them out.

Do a search on the site for Sun-Fly hybrid ceramics. There have been some absolutely amazing sets made and for under $1/chip.

Again, I must admit being biased against these. I strongly dislike over-sized inlays and the minimal repeated spot pattern is very blah to me. I would say pass but again there are many folks on here that swear by them.

As you noted, the greatness with CPC comes in the ability create what you want. I would recommend holding off on these unless you go full custom. However, if you stay on this site long enough, I will almost guarantee you find yourself thinking "Man, why didn't I just go CPC from the beginning?".

Same as above. These certainly are a more pricey option ( especially the 43mm 1k and 5k ) but stay here long enough and you will be kicking yourself for not grabbing them when you could.

The recent sale of Roadhouse chips may be a viable option for Paulsons. Not new, but potentially in your price range... though there aren’t many on the classifieds yet.

Regarding the Majestics: the dust washes right off. As for the slippery nature of the chips, I hit them with 1500-grit sandpaper, and they stack much better now. Not like Paulsons, but more like decent ceramics. You can pick up a barrel without them exploding everywhere.

I was looking around for samples but they seem a little hard to come by, and not available on their website. Is this one that I can potentially buy blind?

@ThinkingFold Thank you for the thoughtful response, that was very helpful. I ended up washing the Majestics and still don't like them, though I didn't bother oiling them.

As for the Jack Casino Chips - is the breakdown easy to work with? I need to do more research on blinds schedules, but would you start with something like a $4k stacks of 20/10/5 or something similar?

The 1000 chip set's breakdown on Apache is:
$25 – 600
$100 – 300
$500 – 100

I may go for the TIki Kings if the Casino Jack denominations are hard to work with without buying 1k/5k chips, so that I can get the hang of hosting a few games while I look for samples of the Sun-Flys and the group buy.

I'm not sure I have the patience for that haha!

Actually these also caught my eye on the classifieds, but it seems a little short on the 500s. Would this be a huge issue?

100 T500's should be plenty for a two-table game. You may be able to make it work for 3 tables. Not sure how many players you'll be expecting in the future, but I bet you'd be able to trade off some of the T25's, T100's, or T1000's for some extra T500's, or just buy an extra rack and be good up to 4 tables.

These are nice, but also keep in mind these are 36mm in size. Not sure if that affects your decision.
