Say the first two hands are won by 83o and J2o?

But wait, there's more! Suppose you have had pocket AA twice busted?

Before you answer, there's more! Add pocket KK, QQ, JJ and 99s busted all in the first hour an half.

Yeah, I was living in hell last night. Reminded me of the scene in Molly's Game where the guy didn't know Bad Brad was Bad. Except I knew they were bad but odds gods turned against me.

yeah unfortunately I couldn't go the distance for that game. Drove a buddy home early from the game and I had to get up early. I know if I had time in, I could be in a positive session but time and the cards were not on my side early.

I was sitting in a 1/2 game a month or so ago, waiting for a seat at 2/5. There was an older lady, who I must say was quite... slovenly. Just a mess in every way. She started out with a short stack, and as always I was keeping mental notes on roughly how many hands people were playing.

Well, after two orbits she had played all but one hand. My name had still not been called after four or five orbits, and by then I couldn’t leave—because this person was not only playing about 90% of hands, but winning over and over again. I couldn’t get up, because I just could not believe that either I, or someone else at the table, would not start to get all those chips back from her.

Over and over, people (including me) got it in good, or gave her the wrong price to continue, and she got there. I’d raise big with, say, KK, make another big bet on a “safe” flop, keep punishing her for calling on the turn, and then she'd make a runner-runner straight with J7 by the river. Every. Time.

I finally left after about four hours of misery, and down about $700... at freaking 1/2.

So yeah, I find it very hard not to chase losses when it seems like variance can’t possibly keep smacking you in the face.

Maybe it was Annie Duke in disguise..... :p

We have donkeys that will play any two cards over here too. Variance is a bitch. I think the best way to handle that is play less hands and play very aggressive when you think you are ahead. Pairs are just pairs...4-5 buy in for me.

How fast do i get up? at a medium pace, i get up, go to the bathroom, splash my face with cold water, come back guzzle some beer and REBUY !

I will say, i've called it a night after a loss when theres still cards being played. Mainly when i'm just not feeling it.

But i will always ride out bad beats.

Reminds me of Minnesota Fats in The Hustler!

Honestly those two players could put their chips on the table and leave. We would just put the calls in as the cards were laid out. Like two blind players that never looked at their cards. Over time they lose more then they win. Some nights the cards just line up and they couldn't lose no matter what they played.

i always think of that scene in the movie too.. kinda where i got my post from. :)

that movie has some gems.

thats also what i love about poker, even though you get bit in the ass sometimes by it.

You can take all the strategyy threads in the world, all the poker books and burn them, talk about 'blockers' till the cows come home,
when your running bad you run BAD.

I’m actually a two buyin guy. I’d be way too pissed off if I lost more than that in one session.

I’m currently in a 3 week hiatus because I’m running so bad over the last 50 hours. Had a guy crack my aa and kk within 20 minutes recently with q8 and k10 suited.

Yours sounds brutal though. Hopefully you run good next time to make up for it.

I read that you are supposed to play until the table is bad or you're making poor decisions, but I don't think this applies at 1/2 no-limit or those lower games. They're more like BlackJack. If you go up big early, take a walk with your winnings. If you lose x number of buyins (2-3 sounds right) even if making good decisions, take a walk and lick your wounds.

The older I get the quicker I leave. It's all an odds game and it just feels like the odd are picking that night to catch things up on the screwy side.

Of course I have seen people hold strong and flip the script by the end of the night. End up making more money because of it.

I usually either put on headphones if they arent already on or get up for a lap and just breathe. Breathing really helps.

Two rebuys and out...at least for NL.

Back when I played limit it was more a total money lost thing. Worst day of poker in my life was the first summer the Borgata opened. I played 6 hours of $3-6 Limit and maybe won one pot I think. Got decent cards but I lost with hands in every single way possible. The players were crazy loose. It was surreal. Only lost $400 somehow (I played kinda of tight back then).

Getting slower and harder every year that passes.

Usually 2 full cap buys and I’ll call it a night.

That’s an awful lot of variance in one short span of time, if this is a home game I’d be suspicious, if it’s at a casino I might question my preflop and postflop action with these hands. Sometimes you do just run absolutely awful though.

This now seems like a psychic prediction :cautious:

Let me try another...

Doesn't matter how many poker movies you watch, how many poker blogs you follow, When you fly to Florida, felt the host and run good for 3 days, you just have to run with it :D

Slowly, so I dont' fall over from the sudden flood of blood to the lower half of body & usually with a loud groan and/or sometimes very loud noises brought on by my joints cracking after sitting for too long. ;)

After losing 2 buy-ins, maybe 3 if I'm feeling salty about being down. Anymore than that and I'm just making another bad decision.

As long as you are playing well and the table remains a profitable endeavor you should stay the number of hours you have originally planed to play.

Ideally I'll budget for three buyins, but as often as not I'll sit down with only two. Either way, bad beats won't chase me away - variance is variance and if there are people playing stupid, I'm happy to stick around.

Edit - that's not true, I just remembered the time I lost my whole buyin with pocket kings on my very first hand. To a guy who limped in early position with aces. I didn't know about that trick yet. I got disgusted and left. So I guess it depends on my mood.
