Hi everyone,

I'm Grant. Sophomore in college, mechanical engineering. Started playing fake money Texas Hold Em with some close friends here and now we're hooked! I think it's time to move past the dice chips and fake money, so here I am. Been browsing for a few weeks and thought I'd make an account finally! Looking forward to learning more.

Welcome, sounds like fun for your gang!

Be careful on this endeavor...it can become...pricey...and addictive  :ROFLMAO:
But no worries there are many members here who suffer with the same problem and can be of great support LOL
But on a more serious note you're in the right place for chip knowledge and poker knowledge. Jump in and make some conversation, your 10 post minimum limit will be lifted in no time and you will be released to the classifieds ;)
As always feel free to ask any questions we are always ready to give our 2 cents lol

Enjoy, Brie

Welcome to the forum.

Great people here with lots of knowledge about poker. Hope you enjoy the site!

Classifieds are part of the reason I posted, haha. The whole "broke college student" trope comes into play...

I picked up a few samples and loved Majestics. Been doing lots of research on tournament and cash games... There's a lot to learn! What happened to be your favorite first chips?

Welcome to the forum!

David

Thank you both!

I similarly found the site looking for an upgrade from dice chips. Made an easy/smaller purchase (CPS tourney) December last year and was happy.

Big mistake was coming back a couple months later this year. Feels like I’m now shipping off or receiving chips every week (day? hour?).

There's a couple really nice CPS sets for sale at what I'd consider a really good price for new chippers. Just saying. FYI: I'm not the seller.

Uh oh, looks like I'm in for it then...

I'm not seeing the tournament sets. Got a link? I think I'm leaning more toward a tournament set than a cash one.

Yeah depending on your price point, it may benefit you to continue browsing (chips which may be in your price range can be found cheaper here then brand new, and also not lose value from your purchase price when you go to resell).

Off the top of my head, there’s a pretty cheap (compared to new purchase) set of muertos that haven’t been played before. Cool ceramic set. I have a set of CPS cash chips up for sale that’s not too much, and there’s even a Rounders auction that hasn’t gotten a bid yet that you maybe be able to make an offer on after close.

The best part of being on here, is that with this and more info from you, people will begin to tag you on sales and posts you may not have otherwise noticed! Good luck!

I don't see a reason why I can't hold off for a bit. Like I mentioned earlier, I picked up some sample sets and I figured I liked the Majestics. I also got Monte Carlos and Milanos. Monte carlos were too heavy for me and the Milano's inlay is super... pale? I really dig the Majestics, though.

I'm absolutely open to other options! I would love to get a feel for what else is out there and would appreciate being pointed at a few different sets. It'd be a "college set" and I wouldn't want to dump a lot of money on a set that could possibly get abused in the hustle and bustle.

I also signed up here to ask about opinions on the Majestic chips that Apache offers. They also just released a 43 mm (larger than a "standard" poker chip) Royal Card Room set that is also a China clay with pretty vibrant colors.

Be careful here though, especially on a student's salary. You can get a really nice Majestic set (about 500) chips for about $200 plus shipping from the Apache site, or maybe even cheaper if you find a kind soul that will sell you some in the classified. That being said, I started at a 1000 chip Majestic cash set and just under two months later a proud owner of the Majestic cash set, and two playable, 800 chip cash sets of Paulson chips. One a mix of casino used and mint chips, and another set that's fully in mint condition (until I present them at a game sometime soon). A mint set of Paulson's will literally last a lifetime of weekly home use. These chips are built to last and endure the hardships of casino play.

Just stay away from Jack Detroit, TRK, and fantasy casino sets that are still in mint shape. You may even be able to get in on the next super secret group buy of Paulson custom chips that were commissioned under shady circumstances, which brings me to rule #1 of PCF...don't take about secret group buys. They don't exist.

Welcome :)

I'm very much looking for that kind soul in the classifieds to sell me Majestics ;) Thanks for the advice!

Also, secret group buys? Never heard of 'em.

Be thankful!!! As awful as that sounds, entering this dark hole (you're welcome out of context :sneaky:) already broke is a blessing in disguise lol

But have no fear there are affordable options out there with decent quality chips!
Glad to hear you've already picked out samples
That's the best way to get a feel for which chips you like the best

Sadly... I fell off the deep end with my favorite first chips....
I saw my first President Casino on the Admiral (PCA) and was like yup gotta have that....it all went downhill from there.... first came the primary set (on the right, very used and worn rounded edges)
Quickly followed by the secondary set (mixed very good and mint condition, still sharp edges ;))

And behold no monies later and 2 cash sets...
They're still in the works, clearly by the holes in some of the racks...but almost all of those holes have been accounted for and are either in the mail or on this forum waiting for final purchase  :ROFLMAO:

So this is unofficial pr0n as we scrub donkeys call it lol (you'll have to delve into some research for that one!)

It's crazy I went from being an eh, pokers cool I guess to roughly 2800 (give or take) chips since I joined a few months back lol

My better half @Ben8257 is a poker player and chip fanatic, and has a few more sets than I.

Just remember, this could be your future.... :ROFLMAO::ROFL: :ROFLMAO:
One could say it's better than drugs...o_O

Cheers! Brie

I don't know whether to be excited or scared! Those chips are beautiful, by the way. Thanks for the pictures!

Btw Ms. Brie skipped a lot of sets and went straight to the higher end chips, many cars are available for less than she has invested in this set!! Fellow chipper Ben, good luck and welcome to the forum, this is bad for your health and extremely addicting!

So much so this is how I spent my 37th birthday washing and oiling chips!!

Thank you!!! There's lots of PCA pr0n around the forum
And there are many more sets here that are beautiful in their own chippy way!

I knoooow. All the nice chips in the pr0n forum... there are so many. This is already unhealthy for me. I want them all!

The royal chips from Apache are awesome, I have the $25,000 ones for my high stakes set. Bought 175 of them

$0.49/chip is starting to push it for me, although they're very nice! Definitely looking for a tournament set now. What is your breakdown like?
