So, I got my first TRK(at least I think it's a TRK), a few Union Plaza chips from the early 70s. These are all very well used and they do shuffle nicely, but I'm shocked by how slippery they are. I mean, wow, completely wasn't expecting that. Is this a product of age or is this how all TRKs are?

I've got a bunch of Matsui made Emerald Bays and I feel like these things slide around more than they do. They don't seem to want to shoot apart of you were holding a few and squeezing them which can happen to the Matsuis, but they are nothing like the Paulsons or other chips I have as far as not wanting to slip.

When I have a few more I'll put a stack of them on an incline and 'nudge' them to see how they hold up to that.

Pics or it didn't happen :)

Just for the record, if you keep them in cases, they never get nasty and slippery...just sayin @detroitdad !!

Are the Paulsons you have also worn to a similar degree and of a similar age? Mint or barely-worn clay chips are typically much less slippery than used and/or aged chips, regardless of manufacturer.

I have barrels that are minty fresh and barrels that are bike tires and in between. The really well worn ones, at least to me feel a bit like chalk rubbing against a true slate chalkboard. They move really smoothly but there is some resistance. These just slide.

I guess I'm really just surprised with as much as people complain about slippery chips(matsuis) but what you hear about these are they are buttery when to me they are not that far apart.

Interesting. To me, it's as much about the sound as the feel. The Matsuis I have feel and sound nothing like TRKs.

In all seriousness, I will take them off your hands. :)

Edit: Got it. didn't see your last post.

Some have a higher tolerance for the degree of slipperiness they will accept, while others will not. It's just like everything else on here, it comes down to your own opinions, perceptions, and impact on playability.

I'm sure if you wear down any kind of chip with enough use, they will become more and more slippery. It only makes logical sense.

Oh, they sound NOTHING like the Matsuis(which sound more like thud to be honest than anything else), they just have some of that slickness to them. They have an interesting sound compared to the Paulsons I have. Not bad, not good, just different but within the same family for sure.

Do tell...if you don't mind.

I've said this before in a few other threads but my friends all think I'm nuts with the chips. Like they think they are cool and all and notice they are better than dice chips, but they wouldn't care about the difference between ceramics, hybrids, plastics, or clay. Most of the comments I've gotten are about the bright colors and that's about it.

There is, however, a big part of that group of friends that makes a yearly trip out to Las Vegas for what is essentially a guys weekend. We do the usual vegas guys stuff and we have a nice mix of folks who are still young and want to go out to clubs every night, and an older crowd that wants to take it easy, have some good food, and enjoy friends they only see a few times a year.

One thing that has always been a stand out for these trips is a lot of us collectively go to the Plaza casino down in 'old vegas' and play craps. If you've never been to the Plaza it is very much NOT the Wynn or the Venetian, nor is it trying to be like some of the lower rent but still main strip casinos. Anyways, we always go and play on this one craps table and have a great time, not to mention on more than one occasions trips to that table have paid for the entire trip for members of the group, so it holds a special place in our hearts. The current chips are, how to put this nicely, ugly. CG has some THC molded chips that aren't awful, but I've never seen them in use. What we always see are RHCs with oversized inlays, no thanks.

So, to hopefully make sense of my love of chips for my buddies I'm putting together an old sample set of chips for this casino that they love, in the hopes that they understand a little bit of why I may want/collect particular chips.

tldr; friends love the Plaza hotel and I want to make sense of chipping to them by showing them cool old chips from a casino they love
