Hey guys,

Just wanted to see what you guys think. Do you think it's more impressive to have different individuals from casinos all over and all the different denominations or do you think it's more fun to try and build racks of your favorite chips? I know this probably depends on the person but I just want to see. So far I'm mainly just collecting singles but after seeing all these really impressive racks and sets that everyone has built over the years it is tempting to start trying to build racks of my favorite chips or just nice looking chips in general.

If you mean building racks as in building racks from singles, that's not very common. I'd say more than 95% of the racks you see here, came that way. Building a rack from singles is expensive and requires a lot of patience. I think it's a very cool thing to do - it's like a hobby in itself - but it's not something a lot of people do.

Truthfully, there really aren't.
Other? yes.
Better?

Welcome man.

It's really two different things, collecting singles or putting together playable sets (requiring racks).

But if you're talking about putting together a rack of chips where no other rack is currently known to exist? I think that's super dope. One, because I'm a fan of putting it together 1 chip at a time, $7, $15, $40 a pop. I can afford that over however many months/years, but at the end I'm sitting there with a $3,000 rack of chips to build my set around that I could otherwise never afford. But still, I only think it would be so awesome in that you'd have a playable set/rack that exists nowhere else.

Don't be scurred to show us what you currently have! Also, what you might be interested in, be it singles, racks, or looking for some new clay to hit the table!

edit: I'll do you one better and actually answer your question. Singles/casino collections don't impress me much, mostly because if I whip out a big enough check, I can go grab em all. Personally I think the custom chip set collections are amazing, as it's not just a % of that have history or a story, but 100%. No casino is producing chips to recognize their days in battle, or family, or best friend who passed. To me, I love to see, hear, and collect those pieces of people's lives.

Like a chip reaper taking community souls, one custom chip set at a time :D

Not 100% sure currently to be honest what I might be interested. I've only played poker a few times at a Christmas work party and at home. So I enjoy playing it but haven't solidified what chips I'd like to have in a set one day. I'm a huge fan of Paulsons and TRKs that's for sure. To me I wouldn't mind having outside of Nevada racks to be played with. Having a mint set of some of the prettiest and most unique chips is the goal one day.....

I love that idea of having a rack that no one else in the world could possibly have. That is something that just got my mind going. I can show pictures tomorrow of what I have currently which are mainly singles but I do have a few multiples as well.

After a recent blowup on the other forum relating to some other friends from this forum, I walked away from it cold turkey after twenty+ years. The single collectors forum is about dead. There have been more new members here in the past two months, then there in the past decade.

Almost everyone here is mainly interested in making playable sets - and then putting them into play! That said, many of the forum members are also interested in collecting singles. And many more than that like to collect sample sets - several singles of different denominations from a complete set.

But even though many folks here do both, you have to know that the singles mindset is very different from the set mindset. You can definitely do both, but you have to approach them differently and separately.

If you like collecting singles, you will find good company here. Just post about what interests you and you'll get some great responses! There is a lot of collective knowledge here regarding pretty much everything related to poker chips, or anything else about poker for that matter.

I collect chips to put together playable sets.

But, I do have a small singles collection also. I only have singles from casinos I've actually played at. I always keep one chip as a souvenir.

Since everyone likes prOn...

Awesome! That's good to know for the future.

As I said I'll show what I have so far. Mostly singles but there are some chips that I do have more than a couple of. Let me know what you guys think!

Yeah I try for the same thing it's just really hard to do playable sets when your broke and in college lol. So I just snag up samples and singles and that is how I enjoy my chips :)

I mainly collect singles for reference for different molds, spot patterns, colours, chip sizes, inlay sizes, hot stamps, etc. That way when a rack comes up for sale I can make an educated decision on whether of not I want to buy. They are also nice to look at.

I'm in college too so I'm just making smart decisions as well. Trying to get a few chips here and there.

My only advice to the OP is not to focus on trying to impress anyone, but collect what you like and can afford. If you like to play poker then build a nice set. If you like to go casinos, bring home a souvenir from each place you go to. Singles collecting or rack collecting is almost the same to me. It could take years and much $ to find that one single chip or enough chips to finish a rack or even a barrel. Obviously its nice if everyone here likes it and thinks its cool, it can be satisfying. However that is only short term gratification. Buy what you like because you enjoy some aspect of it. You will fine many people love this hobby for the hunt, some like to score a great deal, some enjoy getting it into play and sharing it with their friends, some love the history behind the chip and casino and some just plain out like collecting. One last thing, this hobby should complement your life and not consume it. You are young, go out and enjoy life. Good luck and happy chippin'

Thanks for the great advice! I'll definitely think about those things when I'm getting chips or thinking of this stuff.
