I have a weekly (sometimes twice a week) game with anywhere from 5-15 people, and we don't use any $5 chips just for convenience. We have been using the same chips, same colors for each denomination for the last 20 years at least. A lot of the guys who play are older men who would have a hard time with change, so I'd like to get a nice set with the following color/denom settings: Red=$10, green=$20, black=$50, white=$100, orange=$500.

From what I can gather shopping around online, the color/denomination combo isn't really universal, but what does seem to be universal is that there are almost never $10 or $20 chips, and always $25's.

Should I just stick with blanks or should I try to get a set customized? I'm assuming you could get whatever denom on whatever color you want, but at quite a bit extra $$$ I'm sure.

If you're talking about ceramic chips, semi custom chips from BRPro Will allow you to place any denomination you want on any chip you want. So, if they have a set of chips and you like their artwork, you can get them to put any denomination on any color.

+1. Easy to order, a nice variety from which to choose, fairly inexpensive for what you've asked for above and can even match your historical color and denomination pairings. Win, win, win, win.

If he doesn't want ceramics then what, can't you do the same thing with majestics/royals?

Welcome to the forum!

As other's have mentioned, custom ceramics are a good bet. As are china clays (majestics, dunes, etc.) with custom labels, or if you want to shell out the big bucks, Paulson clay chips with custom labels from @Gear. I'd encourage you to get samples (a sentiment you'll undoubtedly hear many times) before you commit too seriously to any option. I can personally say that what I had in mind changed drastically after joining PCF and seeing/hearing what others do, as well as getting my hands on some premium chips.

For custom ceramics, others have mentioned @BR Pro Poker , however another option is to get in on a cards-mold group buy from China if there are any still going on.

If you decide to go the Paulson route, many members "murder" defunct casino chips by removing the inlay and using @Gear 's premium laminated labels to customize the chips to their liking. Although this option may be a bit pricier than you intended, it's a way to get casino-quality chips that look and feel amazing but are customized to your game. On the positive side, since the colors you use are all very common, you'll have a wind variety to choose from. This is a pretty popular strategy on PCF, and you can find lots of pics of other members' custom relabeled sets in pron section. Regardless, I'd encourage you to get your hands on a barrel, as they really do feel amazing.

Sure can. Both of those sets can be ordered with blanks and then you can purchase the labels from either gear or BR pro. But that's going to definitely cost a little bit more. Also, as a new member, the whole idea of putting on your own labels can seem daunting.

A lot of games use $20s in place of $25s. The $10/$25/$50/$100 combo is an interesting break-down. The consensus here is $5/$20 or $25/$100 offers a more efficient spread (multiples of ~5).

Then again, I used to play 5/10/25/100/500 with unmarked Super Diamonds for years, and that totally worked for us. Except, we kept making a lot of change, even with generous stacks.

I’d ask how often you make change in a game and, if you do, which denominations do you make change with? Does the $25 cause any issues as you can’t split the $25? Then, I’d ask if that impedes the game or adds a positive social interaction. From there, you might be able to drop one of the denominations and readjust the chip totals to fit your game or decide you want to keep what you have.

You’ve been playing that game with those folks for a long time and you are in the best position to see if it works.

If you want to explore a bit, share a bit about the games you play, buy-ins, and betting structure. Folks here will provide some inputs to help you think about it.

At the end of the day, if you have a group of old guys and the game works, then it sounds like you may have a winning formula. If you want to add customs to see if it adds more joy, then go for it. If you want to tinker with the chips and want to get creative with custom inlays, then tinker- you can make the call to buy later.;)

Look into "banks" chips..apache poker.com

If you guys have been playing for 20 years together, presumably everyone knows the denoms in their sleep... So then I would go with solids. You could probably assemble a really nice THC Starburst set with just a little patience. Red, green, black and white are the most common for those; really only the orange might take some looking.

If your lowest denom is a $10 you must be playing with a pretty large bank roll. You should get cpc custom for security. If you don’t want clays then get custom ceramics

Welcome @larrythedog . What part of VA? I am in Mechanicsville.

I will say that getting a game that's been going for that long to change is definitely a hard row to hoe. Custom ceramics might be your only ticket.

If you can get the change implemented, standard colors would be the way to go for sure:
Red $5
Green $25
Black $100

If you are close to RVA, I have a ceramic set you can borrow to try it out on your players.

Red=$10, green=$20, black=$50, white=$100, orange=$500.

I mean if you are truly playing for this kind of cash the money for customization shouldn't be a concern.

But I get the feeling this is some sort of tournament game where these denoms do not stand for actual cash. I would be +1 for getting semi-customs from @BR Pro Poker if you want these denoms on the colors you choose. That's the least expensive route to customization on pretty nice chips. You could do blanks and labels too, but that can be a lot of effort and results that aren't always as nice. (Unless you get really high end chips like used Paulsons.)

(If this is cash and the lowest denom is $10, wouldn’t a more “normal” progression be 10x that of a $1/$2 set—10/20/50/250/1K? Or maybe this is limit? IDGI.)

Anyway, if it is actually a $10/$20 cash game, the sky should be the limit as far as a killer custom or THC set goes. One thing to consider is that it seems CPC has lead times now of 10-12 months or more.

Assuming tournament or Sit N Go structure here, I would say get some solids - and label over with your denoms..

@TheChipRoom tournament set sale this Sunday and HSI/IOC roulettes I think are still available and a killer deal.

Edit: only racks of green roulettes available but they should pop up on the classifieds eventually from time to time.

I agree with BR Pro poker custom ceramics. I'd add that you can semi custom an existing set with the color/denominations you are looking for. Should not be too expensive, but it's all relative I guess.

do you happen to know of any youtube videos on this?

(Kidding aside, I believe the Valentino High Rollers was the first @Hobbyphilic video I found on Youtube.)
