Should I buy discounted used casino chips or new casino chips? (Horseshoe Southern Indiana) (1 Viewer)

Bumping this thread because i relied on it really heavily when deciding between buying new and used HSIs. I ended up buying a full set of used chips, and then a barrel worth of new chips to shuffle and geek over.

I absolutely love my used set. Primary 1s have definitely seen battle, but the 5s and 25s were in great shape, shuffle incredibly well, look great. Played with them once, and it’s soooooooo nice to not have to worry about them getting scuffed up or greasy or whatever. People loved the chips, I loved getting to play with them, but i really loved not having to worry or stress about one getting messed up. I may buy a cleaner for the 1s since they show dirt, but will probably leave the 5s and 25s as is

We don’t believe you until we see some pictures :)

I ordered the primaries, they will arrive whenever the shipping winds bring them. I honestly like the look of the set better and being cheaper it was a win win. Not many folks in Canada will be playing with these making them very secure.

I bought a used casino set too, the HSI. Love them. Best decision I ever made. They are the same as Vegas chips that I’m used to as far as look and feel, and that’s what I wanted: the same feeling when I’m playing at a live casino. Wear doesn’t bother me at all. I didn’t get into it with the intent to sell them later, so I’m cool with them being well used. If I ever get into playing hold’em again, I’ll probably buy a different set for that. I use mine for my craps table, so stacking and performance was really important to me. Cheap chips didn’t cut it.

^^This!^^

It’s funny…because while everyone says chips are meant to be played with, the first question anyone asks on a sale is if the chips are mint or If they have they been felted. It’s a catch 22 if you ever resell. And since most players don’t appreciate and/or respect the chips, not sure I want to break out my mints for them to F-up. And for just that purpose I bought a used HSI set to back up my mint set. Will break out the mint set if I ever play with chippers, and used if just playing with players. Then I don’t have to worry about them. Splash away boys!

And FYI my ultrasonic REALLY cleaned those dirty HSI 1s nicely. 5s, 25s, 100s, & 500s too!

I'll bring some pr0n to the table:

Edit: Used snappers will be relabeled as quarters.

Wow man! Nice sets!

For me, it’s a matter of how much do I like the chips, and I bought a giant set of sec. HSI. I plan to play them for sure, not gonna worry about the resale value, I plan to keep this set for life, in fact, I’ve sold off most everything else I had laying around to afford them, I like the 5s-25s so much that I do t think I’ll ever find anything better to replace them, (RHC)... for me, this set checked all the boxes for life-long RHC keeper set.

The HSI francs are amazing. I didn’t buy any as I use my chips for craps, so francs are useless to me. I can admire them, though

That top set is amazing. Using as is or planning in relabeling?
Thanks! Planning to use as is. Like @Johnblue this set checked all the boxes for me and as you can see I went all in. Definitely will be my forever RHC set. It’ll be my number two next to my Vineyards, but with all the different denominations will have a lot more flexibility. Not really worried about the resale value either, but will be very selective on which groups get to play them.

Thanks! And agreed...this set checked all the boxes and will be my RHC forever set. Not worried about resale, but definitely worried about damage. A PCF group would be allowed to handle I mint set. My regular poker group gets the used! Lol

I love the colors of the secondary 5 and the primary hundo, but just couldn't justify picking up another cash set presently.

i wouldn't be worried about what players for a few hours are going to do to your chips really no matter who they are. The really used sets are a product of decades of daily play by almost constant handling. In fact, I'd imagine PCFers would probably be over there shuffling away on chips instead of a lot of normal home game players.

I buy all my chips to get played, but that's just me. To each his own. But no chance am I loaning them out to folks ;-) they can borrow the ceramics.

I'm glad you bumped this. I've been trying to figure out the best path and this thread helped!

I bought 2200 used HSI Primary chips, They look great and I could in no way justify paying way more for totally brand new chips.

I like them better than the new (when I got it) Pharaoh set that I used to have before I sold it on.

And you're not the only one. New paulsons have square sharp edges that don't shuffle well. And they won't break in easily unless you have lots of friends who shuffle a lot.

I will say I have mint chips and used chips and regardless I never worry about a chip getting damaged while playing with them. The thought never crossed my mind nor will it ever. They're chips, they're meant to see felt not live on a shelf.

Minnt Paulson's are hard to shuffle anyways, gotta get a few games in them to soften the edge a bit and they start to shuffle a little better.

I'm sure its been said in this thread already, but it can be said enough - get samples, and lots of them!
When I bought my first used casino chips, I was excited to be buying Paulsons! I knew this because I'd bought a sample set of Casino de Mexico chips and I loved them. Turns out there's a world of difference between mind leaded THCs and worn, unleaded RHCs. Who knew?
