Anyone ever run shot poker tournies?

Some of my friends that are new to poker don't like playing with money (I have some stingy friends, they don't even want to buy in for $5 at a 0.02/0.05 game).

So, I've started freeroll shot poker tournies because 1) we have alcohol problems and 2) they don't "lose" money. First place gets $20, second gets $10 from my pocket. My players supply the alcohol so I'm pretty much breakeven/making profit on leftover alcohol.

I run a turbo structure based on this: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/help-two-hour-turbo-structure.4295/ but even shorter at 10 minute blinds. This gives new players a better chance of winning, and hopefully making them feel more comfortable with throwing around 30-40$ a night for cash games later (my friend group normally plays 0.05/0.10).

I've run these games 3 times now and have refined the rules to this:
  • The game starts with a shot (shot in this context is loose, it's probably closer to 1/2 a shot)
  • At every blind increase (every 10 minutes), all players in the game take a shot
  • If you bust, the villain gets to pour you a drink
  • Rebuys are done with 2 shots, and are unlimited
  • While busted you must take shots with each subsequent bust (if you decide not to rebuy, you're still taking shots with other players that bust)
Of course chance of alcohol poisoning is high. I obviously don't enforce these rules if a certain player is clearly too drunk, but if you're too drunk to drink, you're automatically out of the tourney. But, being college students/recent grads, we aren't unfamiliar with drinking stupid amounts of alcohol. The past 3 times I've done this have been fun for players and myself, and we're usually pretty drunk by the end of the night.

Any other PCF'ers that run something of this sort? I imagine I can only do this for another few years before it's too late for my liver.

For the price of all the liquor, they could afford to put some money on the table. :D

Sounds like fun drinking but not so much for playing poker. How many times do you have to say ITs ON YOU.
probably 3 times on every street, with increasing frequency as drinks go in...

yea, somehow they're unable to recognize that they're technically buying in $10-20 per tourney, but can't make a connection to cash for poker

Clearly this is more about drinking than playing poker with these guys.

You know what would be interesting...if one of those 30 year studies, where they monitor them for 30 years and see if/how/when they evolve to no drinking and serious poker. Sounds like an excellent candidate for a PhD dissertation.

Whatever you have to do to get a game going. In the future, I suspect you'll be able to introduce satellites to your freeroll tourney...

degenerate drinking + degenerate gambling, yes. There's almost 0 poker with open raises with any face card and limps with 100% of ranges. I've had success with converting some of the players to cash, and they're the most fun to play with because they play exactly how they do during my freeroll tournies.

of course, for others, it's just an excuse to get blackout drunk

An interesting idea actually... Most of my actual regulars prefer cash, but I could see myself setting up a $30-50 tourney and a couple satellite seats..

Haha, sounds like my kinda game....if only I was 10 years younger. LOL

Nowadays we still drink a lot but mostly for enjoyment and not penalty shots.
