I keep seeing screen used $5 Casino Royale chips that are certified by the EON Archive listed on eBay. I believe the only denominations used were the 5K, 25K and 100K chips.

Were they commissioned for the film but never used? Is this just scammers hiking up the price of some other chips with a copy of a COA? You’d think they’d use the ones that appeared the movie if they were going to try to pass along fraudulent chips or COAs.

I’ve seen the used proper denominations on eBay too, but the same sellers offer the $5 chips. Most of these auctions are coming from either Germany or the UK. Are any of those auctions for the real screen used chips or are these known scammers? Many of the auctions seem quite popular. Anyone have some insight on this? Thanks.

Several different brands of Fakes out there, I have heard different versions, but from my understanding Cartamundi made the Originals. But there are several Chinese replicas made, I even own some sold from @Apache

The lowest denom in the movie was the Teal $5k, at least at the high stakes game. There was no $5 chip used in that movie so how would it be "screen used?" Just another RIP off. Happens all the time, several people have sold 05 CDIs on eBay claiming they were used in License To Kill, the 98s are closer to accurate but even those were not replicas of the actual chips which had Red Inays and looked nothing like the 05 Series.

How do you know what is authentic? Maybe Berny could help with that @allforcharity ? Personally I would probably never trust it to be original.and wouldn't pay the crazy money those chips bring anyways!

Best of Luck! Ben

Looked around a bit for more information. There was a James Bond advent calendar recently released where one of those days includes what they claim is a screen used Casino Royale chip with the COA. The site advertising it shows the red $5 chip. Then the actual site that was selling it shows a blue $500 chip.

Even if full sets of lower denominations were commissioned for possible use in the movie, which I have no idea if they were or not, they wouldn’t be a screen used prop. No COA from anyone should be issued saying they were either.

This makes even the proper denomination chips suspect to me. Being able to tell what’s been screen used and what’s not seems impossible at this point to me.

Thank you for the responses. Maybe someone knows more. I figure this is definitely the place to ask if someone does.

BG made the onscreen originals. Below is the thread where it was discussed but was also confirmed by @Djobe a french chipper with knowledge of GPI France's office and operations.

$5 chips were indeed used on the filming of Casino Royale, I’ve added a photo of them on set, also they was sold in the advents.

Also the gold colour on the screen used chips is a different gold and also higher definition on the screen used.

Seems like a technicality that they may have been used on one of the tables in the background but they definitely were not used in the main poker scene though.

This design iteration of the Casino Royale $5 chip did not get any screen time. The main poker scene in Montenegro used only $5000 and above denoms, plus the B&G plaques.

The Bahamas poker scene uses a different design entirely.

The only other scene I recall where poker chips were filmed was at the BodyWorks exhibit when Dimitrios puts a set of keys for the plane bomber on top of a small stack of chips.

No the red didn’t get screen time which is why I used the term “screen used” and not “screen seen” the certificates say used in the film which they was looking at the on set screenshot above.

The production photo shows a set dresser laying out the chips ($5, $25, $100, $500) on a roulette table. Did a roulette table ever appear on screen, perhaps in the background of a shot?

I don't know anything about what you guys are talking about, but the guy in this photo with the chips is Peter Meheux. He was the head cinematographer (Director of Photography) on Casino Royale. That device in his hand that it looks like he has pointed towards the chips is an incidental light meter. He is measuring the light falling on those chips to calculate the proper exposure specifically to film them. It is a bit of a process and they wouldn't bother doing this unless they intended to film those chips specifically as the main focal point of a shot. Honestly Peter Meheux shouldn't ever really be doing this himself for any shot in the movie. There must have been a reason he was doing this. I just thought that context was interesting given the discussion. Perhaps they intended to use some close ups for b-roll or for a title sequence etc. For what that is worth.

Is it possible that the EON certifications for the chips you're seeing only certify that they were "made for the production" or "used in the production" rather than "screen used"? The production photo above surely authenticates that the $5 chips were used in the production, and probably even shot on film, but perhaps the shots that they were filmed in didn't get included in the final edit of the movie.

The certificates says “used” Eon make the films they have no reason to lie about such things, there was also lower chips used in promotional photos.

I have seen it a couple of times on there too. My mind jumps to them buying a roll off apache and trying to sell them like they are movie used.

I’ve just purchased a set from this seller, they purchased calendars and are splitting them, why would they spend £200 a Calender to do that? Around 1 in 3 calendars had a screen seen so you would have to have spent £600 to get one.

I’ve just compared the apache from their website and there are clear differences to the screen used chips.

Thanks for all of the information. Definitely cleared a few things up.
