After an insanely hectic summer schedule, I've forced myself into some down time, and fly out for an extended vacation to Sayulita at the end of the week. I fly into Puerto Vallarta and then am planning to drive up to Sayulita.

I've never been (aside from Tijuana - which doesn't really count), and have no idea what I'm getting into.

Any tips / suggestions / advice?

What kind of tips are you looking for? I've been to Mexico more times than I can count, but never to Sayulita.

Here are some tips:
  • Negotiate any purchase or taxi ride. Make sure you confirm a price in advance
  • Carry cash with you at all times
  • Don't drink the water - even if told it is filtered. Bottled water for everything, even brushing teeth. No ice in drinks unless it contains alcohol.
  • See your doctor before you go for a prescription of antibiotics to take before your trip
  • Trust your gut - Mexico is not as dangerous as the media or my grandma make it out to be - but don't be dumb - don't wander alone, drunk, and if it feels wrong leave!
  • Wear a rubber, dude.
  • Don't buy Cuban cigars - they are all fake.
What else would you like to know?

I was just in Huatulco last month, but I'd second most everything that @CraigT78 said. Keep in mind with the exchange rate, everything should be super cheap. Our taxi rides were invariably 38 pesos without negotiating, which is ~$2. I got a t-shirt for 100. Cash is definitely king, so find an ATM early. Be careful though, because we had a lot of trouble breaking 500 peso bills at restaurants and shops. It's only worth $20 and change, but you get looks like you'd expect for breaking out a $100. Brush up on your Spanish as much as possible. I didn't need it at all in Cancun, but it really helped on the latest trip. We weren't super careful with the water and didn't bring antibiotics, but the risk of messing up your trip bad isn't something to scoff at. Have a good time! Fishing the Pacific was a hell of an experience for me.

I will stress again about the water. Our last trip to Cabo ended with landing at DFW and driving my wife directly to the ER. We were super careful and ultimately decided it was from brushing her teeth. Montezuma's Revenge is not a laughing matter! It will ruin a trip!

Also @atomiktoaster mentioned the exchange rate. I never changed my money to pesos but knew ahead of time what the exchange rate was. I found that the US $$$ is just as well accepted and they would do the exchange on a calculate. You would just have to negotiate the rate they used ;-)

Oh - also as atomik said - go fishing for sure!

-Carry small currency (under $20 should suffice) at all times. No need to break out the big bills.
-If it's not ingrained into your brain by now, I'll say it again lol. DON'T DRINK THE WATER! Bottled all day every day.
-Save your directions on Google maps offline ahead of time. That way, if you have no signal out there you can at least access the maps.

Downloading the maps area now!

Thanks guys - this is great stuff!!!!

Whatever price something is tagged as in Mexico, it's negotiable.

If something costs like $10 US, it's probably worth $2

Have fun! Its an awesome part of the country.

Ive spent a good deal of time in Mexico. As others mentioned, you should be careful of the water. Definitely don't drink it, but its also tough to avoid, as many places will wash vegetables etc with regular water. I've gone months at a time without getting sick (while still brushing my teeth with tap water), but have also been sick as a dog while taking every precaution. If you do get sick, go to the pharmacy and let them know you have tourista, and they can sell antibiotics over the counter.

If you are planning on driving around, don't be surprised if you get pulled over by a cop looking for some sort of bribe. They usually only want a couple bucks, and even the bribe can be haggled. The threat is usually- If you don't pay the fine now, you will need to go to court and it can be much higher. As long as you are aware of whats happening, its not really a big deal. Ask him if he can pay your fine and how much $ and then negotiate it down to a reasonable amount of US dollars.

In general, Just don't do anything stupid, and use common sense as you would traveling to certain places in the US.

I only saw terrible rates offered for buying with US currency, but I'm sure it varies by area. I wish I had landed some dorado, but I got this sweet video:

I just read somewhere that you should also keep your mouth shut while showering... is the risk really that bad???

Lol. I mean I wouldn't shower with a wide open mouth, but yes, it can be that bad.

Again, definitely the water. Not only the running water and ice, but also any fruit or other food that's been washed with water.

My first trip to Cancun resulted in an endoscopy -- by Dr. Mary Fang, no less -- and months of stomach misery.

I'd advise talking to your doctor or local government health office and taking some prophylactic pills along...

Have fun!

Ooo... this reminds me of what some one else told me recently... "absolutely NO salads!" Because the lettuce/veggies are washed in water.

Makes sense!

If you do have to encounter what appears to be a real policeman/federali, remove your sunglasses when you are talking to them. It shows respect.

Good to know!!!!

(although, now that I think about it, I think I always do this... I'm sure my dad smacked me on the head about it at some point growing up) :)

Good advice here already. It's been about 8 years since I went to PV so some of the following may be outdated, I don't know if you are staying in PV at all so this may not be helpful. When you land there will be a dozen taxi/limo drivers waiting as soon as you clear the gate, your first instinct is "Taxi, gotta get one", walk past them as there are others more reasonable outside, we had a large group some took the first bunch and some took the latter, the latter got off cheaper and arrived at or resort faster (one of the groups ended up at a shopping area on the way not by their choice either). PV was a wonderful place to visit, people were very friendly, US currency is accepted there, but it was easier to negotiate with pesos, we learned this only on the last two days of our trip. There was a bar on the beach called 'Daiquiri Dicks' (it is the opposite direction of where are headed though) one of the best Mojitos (I know its Mexico) i have ever had, we were drinking them by the pitcher. I don't know if tequila is your thing, but I would definitely visit a tequila 'factory' if you can, I wasn't a huge tequila fan at the time, but I can say this sparked my quest for better tequila in the US. I think some even offer to ship, not sure of the legality of that though.

Hopefully we get a full TR from you. We are planning on going back to puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta next August.

ETA: Fresh Guac too

Made it!!!

And so far, all of the advice you guys provided has been great. The offline maps was genius, and a life saver when we arrived yesterday! Definitely super cognisant of the water, and probably being a little too paranoid (closed eyes/mouth in the shower, etc.). But better to be safe than sick, I guess.

Now... time for a cocktail!

Back a day early (gotta keep the big clients happy), and had a blast. Just a bit of a shock going from this...

Welcome back! It was a shock to us too! The day before was close to 80 degrees. You never know what you're gonna get in CO. I've had to change out of shorts and flip flops a few times at DIA!

Looks like you had a good vacation!!(y)

You're clearly the smart one.

Because this is what happens when you forget to pack appropriately...
