Even though I already knew, and even though I thought it couldn't be any more clear, every sample set I get seems to make it even more clear and obvious - never buy a set of stock chips until you've seen them with your own two eyes and handled them. Pictures don't tell the whole story, and in some cases they are made to blatantly lie. And the differences between the feel of chips can be dramatic, particularly with ceramics.

If you are new to chipping or just looking for info about chip sets, if you learn nothing else, learn this - get samples first!

This reminds me of a question I was going to ask on PCF...

Over at the other site, there had been discussions about creating a "Sample Set Traveling Pack" (my own words), where people were going to gather all of the best options for chips, probably enough for a Small Flat Rate box for shipping. And it would travel around to different people, who would then pass it along when needed, and each person would pay the shipping.

Anyway, I remember seeing the build-up to it, but then the site went to crap, so I lost track of it......
I just thought I'd mention it here as it seems appropriate.

Yeah, PAZ914 and Brains613 had got pretty far by Aug 2013 toward putting together something for this purpose. BGinGA had a lot of input as well. It might have been sent out to the first sample member, but I couldn't tell with a quick search. Still sounds like a good idea to me.

I'd certainly contribute to such a traveling set if I could. Would have saved me time and dollars for sure!

Two or three of years ago, I was toying with the idea of listing sample sets for newbies (and other interested parties) in the CT classifieds. Just a bunch of different chips from different manufacturers in different configurations, for my cost plus shipping (I figured $10 shipped would be a nice easy-to-remember number). I put it on the back burner when Paz/brains started their project.

The only other thing I would add is if you are custom designing to get samples from the company and then prototype a chip or two to ensure the colors and design work.

so i guess the next logical step is start a list of all the necessary samples

1. paulson home set sample
2. paulson casino used sample
3. CPC mold samples
4. CPC color samples
5. China clays
6. ceramics (possibly 1 from each vendor)

add to the list.........

1. China Clays..
2. Some of the plastic slugged chips..(like JP Commerce, Trademark or Brybelly)

IMO these are the chips that most new to the hobby will be inclined to purchase. I still remember falling off my chair when I priced myself a set of 1000 Pharaohs..

I would recommend adding Paulson molds since they all look and more importantly (IMO) feel a tad different. RHC, THC (LCV, SCV), various house molds, Paulson Chips, pip/suits, etc.

Here's BGinGA's original list, with some edits from me:

High-end retail chips (5):
~ BCC Cigar & Snifter mold (Protoge)
~ BCC Flame mold (Monterey Club, Capones)
~ BCC T-mold (Mardi Gras, Samurai Palace, blank solids)

BCC dropped for being very hard to find
~ Paulson Card Pips mold (World TH&C, Avalon Club, Private Cardroom, etc.)
~ Paulson PAULSON mold (National Poker Series, Paulson Classic, Casino De Isthmus)

High-end casino chips (6):
~ Paulson casino RHC mold, mint
~ Paulson casino RHC mold, used
~ Paulson casino RHC mold, worn
~ Paulson casino TH&C mold, mint
~ Paulson casino TH&C mold, used
~ Paulson casino TH&C mold, worn
(these should be a mix of hot-stamps, faux inlays, round inlays, and shaped inlays, over-sized inlays, and should contain both solids and spotted chips)

High-end custom chips (10):
~ ASM A-mold
~ ASM B-mold
~ ASM Cards & Dice mold
~ ASM Circle-Square mold
~ ASM Diamond-Square mold
~ ASM Elephant & Crown mold
~ ASM H-mold
~ ASM Hourglass mold
~ ASM Horsehead mold
~ ASM No-Mold

:
~ Greek key mold - J (Progen 80 blanks)
~ Greek key mold - L (PGI, blanks)
~ Reverse-S mold (TCR, blanks)
~ Spirit mold - (Pyramid Casino, Casino da Vinci, blanks)
~ Stitch mold (Milano, blanks)
~ Pharaoh's Club (TCR, labeled)
~ Desert Palms (TCR, labeled)
~ Dunes Casino Commemorative (TCR, labeled)
(these should be a mix of blanks and labeled chips, and contain both solids and spotted chips)
ADDITIONS
~CPS chips
~Apache crown mold (when complete)

I suppose that 10g injection-molded plastics (Desert Sands, Dunes Commemorative, Pioneer Club, Nexgen Pro, etc.) and a couple of common slugged 11.5g and 13.5g chips (wheat-ear mold) could be included for comparison, plus maybe an 8g super-diamond and a 12g Nexgen chip.... add on another five low-end chips.
ADDITION
~Poker Nights/Monaco Club slugged chips

So call it 40 chips total -- the Traveling Paz Pak.

Love the adhesive label on zip-lock baggie idea. List the chips, approximate price, and potential sources (or a link to a CT post containing all of the info). Or slip the chips into a few of those clear binder pages for chips. Either way, it should all fit into a large bubble envelope.

One thing. Anybody new to the hobby is not going to shell out huge $$$ for a custom set from CPC. No offence to them. IMO their prices are fair knowing the work and prep needed to make them. Even more prohibitive are the costs involved to MAIL the almost half-kilo/1.10lb package. I think a better idea is to have two sample sets. One being based on weight/composition and the other the more complete a-little-of-everything style.

An even better idea is to have the Companies involved provide Corporate chips with their info placed right on them. If I was a newb and opened a box of 40 chips I wouldn't know what the F I was even looking at! Imagine how lost you'de be sitting in front of all those molds and clays..

I was working on designing my ASM set before my original china clays even arrived. I knew that was what I really wanted and didn't really want to waste time with the small fry, other than something to tide me over. Actually my first post ever on CT was in regards to an ASM group buy that was running at the time.

I think putting CPC chips into a sample pack for newbies would be pretty essential.

They may not to go all in for a custom set, no, but maybe they want to see something on the H mold like Key Wests, or are interested in old horsehead chips someone is offering. Having the chips from these molds in the sample box could potentially help the buyer.

You make a very good point about the total weight of this thing adding up...hadn't thought of that.
