I honestly love sample sets, but is it just me or does anyone else find it crazy how much some go for?
$100 plus for 5 chips insanity!It’s insane
Shit bro,I honestly love sample sets, but is it just me or does anyone else find it crazy how much some go for?
I agree find myself paying more than I should for cool Buttons and cut cards! Doesn’t help either paying arm and leg for shipping prices for us Canadian boys.Shit bro,
These dam sample sets have been my undoing on this site. What a wonderful and terrible addiction all rolled into one. Then comes the DB addiction. Then the cut cards...
I try to stop. I go a week, maybe two, and then I relapse somehow. I can't help myself. I want to absolutely fill my poker room to the nuts with samples and pieces of casino history. I'd say that's what is driving me, personally anyways!
If I sold off my entire singles and sample set collection, I could fund an entire low end CPC custom cash or middle end STT tournament set. Don't go down the rabbit hole, trust me.
Hmmmmmmmm.....
Now I'm thinking too...how much have I got into mine. I've honestly not worked that out. I suppose I won't try, for sake of my own sanity
I hear ya. It's a slippery slope too. Once you pull the trigger for an expensive sample set, you blur the budget after that...I see some that I’m interested in / want, but I can’t come to paying 100+ for something to display in the poker room, when my players wont even know the difference
I think what started the samples downward spiral of stupidity for me, was buying my first display wall cabinet. It was just gonna be for Jack chips. Then I bought 4 more. I must admit, they give alot of boost to the aura or appearance of my poker room! I still can't justify the cost, but I can't stop myself either...Thank god I never got into sample sets. I need something I can shuffle, so usually I just buy a barrel of any mold I can find, and then I’m content. The only sets I buy are customs nowadays.
Im trying to stop chip purchases all the time. I get nowhere..the addictive personality common amongst many gamblers, er poker players
They hold value though! I’ll never let my personally valued samples go, and I’ll always buy any I don’t have.Im trying to stop chip purchases all the time. I get nowhere..
Completely addicted. I don't even have shelf space and I keep on buying. I tell myself shit like "I'll just rotate them out" etc.

All my sets are being sold to go towards the new house, but I’ll look forward to buying again once we’re settled in.
Hahaha, not meaning to bid them up! (unless a charity one). Funny thing is, it really is just number of people dependent. I've seen a sample go up and two of us go at it, just to see another one listed the next week and go for super cheap to the leftover person.@BarrieJ3 you are the one I think I see most frequently bidding up sample auctions
As soon as we're settled in the new house, work and pictures will be going up. Samples will be displayed by type, with PCFers tributes to pets, NAGBs & Boat Chips, customs from the same user or designer, and even entire card rooms receiving there own display (Bean Town Pokers). Each display will at the very least have its own custom artwork created and displayed with it, most likely via one of our local wood workers here on PCF.Bet you’re collection is pretty wild, would love to see it.
So yes, I figure it’s fun because that’ll be everyone’s first take. But it’s a poker room filled with....eclectic samples from the poker community at large. Not those nice historic binions and WSOP trash. We’re talking chips with cartoon crabs, and puppies, and chippers infants on the inlay. Sooooo:The menage a trois?

Additionally, I think it really helps to be either a popular or well known user. Having connections and seeing people allows for those PMs of hey do you want a sample, saving you $30-100 a pop. I'm not really either of those descriptions, but folks have at least started recognizing my appreciation for their customs and hard work, so I've definitely gotten some help along the way.

The idea is to basically make the displays and room a dedication to everyone else’s work, and creating my own set as a nod to that.
Current working titles for the poker room and eventual CPC/relabel THC set are “The Amalgam” or “The Menagerie”.
