Retire in North Carolina ... poker wasteland? (4 Viewers)

Pokerwise, NC is pretty slow unless you have a good group. But there is poker at Cherokee and they host the WSOP circuit 2 or 3 times a year. It happens to start this weekend and goes for a week or two. I'll be heading out there for a few nights.

Really hoping that Two Kings Casino (which is partially open) in Kings Mountain eventually gets poker, because it is a lot closer to me.

I plan to retire in Delaware, although it is also a bit of poker wasteland at the moment. At least until @PhilLaFond gets a game going!

There actually is a state income tax in Delaware. However, there is no sales tax and VERY low property taxes especially in Sussex county. Those attributes are favorable to retirement FWIW.

Negatives are traffic in summer, excessive bachelorette parties in the beach towns, days when the wind is out of the west, and proximity to New Jersey.

DE also has VERY favorable retirement income tax laws.

I'm working on getting a my home poker room up and running. Probably could make it happen now, but I need a reliable group of regular players...

"Bored with chipping and sick of poker" Is this going to have an impact on your retirement plan?

To the OP: did you eventually decide where to retire?

Temporary hijack: I’m moving my family to a new community in Mount Holly (15-20mins from Charlotte) in early June this year. Running away from California high taxes, high prices, and insane traffic. It’s bittersweet because there are so many good things about the Bay Area, but we’re excited as this is our first house, and it appears the majority of the community members are similar to us in age and the plight to leave bigger metros.

Based on what i’ve read from this thread, it looks like i’ll be leaving local casino life behind (which is fine with me) and hosting/attending more home games (which is totally fine with me).

/end hijack.

Gaston County is going to likely be quite the change for you from the Bay Area. I'm in Iredell County, which is a little north of where you are going to be.

Beautiful area of the country you are moving to. I have a cousin who lives in Denver just north of the Charlotte area and close to Lake Norman.

You mention leaving the Bay Area for many of the same reasons I decided to leave Virginia for Texas a few years ago. Good luck with your move and remember once you get established in NC, don’t ever forget what you got away from in California.

Mt Holly ? Super sketchy area. Good luck.
Hmm.. Can you tell me more? This was not my impression.... give me the details!!!

Yep. Heard loud and clear. The are other reasons I did not mention... regarding local politics and running my business for 13 years in San Jose.... I won't miss that aspect at all.

I love the Outer Banks. I can drive my Jeep on the beach and fish. Gear being all loaded up in the truck bed is a nice benefit. I'm thinking Manteo to retire. It's just over the bridge to Nags Head. The summer traffic in OBX sucks. Manteo wouldn't be a problem. It has a nice quaint downtown with restaurants and bars, plus a marina if I ever decide to get a boat. Home prices are about the same as Raleigh I believe.

My wife has always wanted to live in Florida. Been there many times during July for my kids' volleyball and soccer tournaments. It's unbearable especially in Orlando with no breeze. I could maybe do it, but it would require an air conditioned man cave for poker and cigars.

Well, if I’m being completely honest, my job is a huge part of why I’m not enjoying chipping and poker as much as I used to. It can be all consuming.

No, but prices in some of the areas we’ve looked at (Lake Norman, for example) are out of control. No need to rush.

Funny you mention that particular lake... there is a member here that lives on Lake Norman... often referred to as "TRKville". I have a South Carolina flag on my Tummy for a reason and always thought I would retire in South Myrtle... UNTIL I visited Lake Norman for the first time! There is a reason the prices are insane, go there and find out David (coincidentally the other member is also a David) you will find out exactly WHY the prices are what they are. When they say "God's Country" nothing else comes to mind any more... my only zillow searches in the last year are my property... and Lake Norman.

As I have been to your 'residence" I would say you can still find some beautiful properties waterfront there for about $1.2 mil... obviously you are well aware and maybe the perfect one hasn't popped up yet, also there are still lots avaliable to build your own thing!

I literally couldn't believe when I read that post, you are penciling in on a good spot brother! That's my plan as well and maybe even before retirement as there is a TON of work in the area within an hours drive.

As you are aware we don't play the same stakes but pencil me in for the $1/$2 "low stakes" nights... as long as there is no damn Holdem! Haha

I have a friend who lives at The Peninsula Club golf club on Lake Norman. I think it's that course. He's a doctor and likes to play poker. He's really cool. I've taken his money a few times. I can hook you up with the games he plays in.

He's got a beach house at Sunset Beach. I've been trying to get him to buy a set of SB chips. I don't think he's into chips though.
