I have been adding paulson solids to my collection for a custom label this past year and some of the purchases include white and red chips with what looks like black sharpie on the edges.

Does anyone have any proven methods to remove the fake spots? I have an ultrasonic cleaner, but was wondering if oxi may work better for this instance.

Also, has anyone tried to bleach a white chip?

Thx

I think it depends on how deep the marks penetrated the chip material. If it is in deep at all, I think you are screwed. I did something to resurrect some E&C chips that had some unremovable mold growing into the chip edges. I held them tight in barrels and took a cushioned sanding block to remove some of the chip material. Did it reduce the chip diameter? Yes. Did I put calipers on them to see how much? No. Could anyone tell the difference if they tried? No. I will try and find the thread and link it.

If you are doomed, I think I have some chips that can help you. They aren't for sale but for you (your good chip karma coming back) we can work something out if needed. I have lots of solids for relabel.

As always, much appreciated sir :).

+1. If you're willing to try more drastic measures you might consider taking one as a sacrifice and trying non-acetone nail polish remover with a q-tip or similar swab. I've found that and/or Goof Off do a good job removing permanent marker from a variety of surfaces including a few semi-porous ones though I've never tried on a clay chip. How many chips are we talking about here?

A bit of non-acetone nail polish remover will remove the black permanent marker from the edge of a chip, you just have to keep it off any hotstamp as I believe it'll also remove the hotstamp. I picked up a few racks of charcoal starbursts a while back, cleaned up one rack last weekend, I can post some pics later tonight if you'd like.

Sharpie comes off really quickly with alcohol (Everclear or denatured alcohol works great, but rubbing alcohol isn't too bad either). That seems less harsh than most other solvents to me. Can't guarantee it won't harm the chip though.

300 to 400 I think.

Yes pics! Did it damage the chip?

Good and bad. The good is if you damage one chip trying one of the methods suggested here it's not like you've reduced your single barrel of rarities to 19. The bad is if it works you'll have a lot of work ahead of you since it's going to be a one chip at a time endeavor to avoid damage. All part of the fun of the hobby I guess :)

Worth it. Sharpie spots on Paulsons should be a crime punishable by law.

I've soaked Paulson chips in rubbing alcohol before for about 30 min or so without damage to remove some built up ink. A few chips had what was like a dried drop of ball-point pen ink in the crevices of the mold. Every few minutes I would rub the ink, and put the chip back in the alcohol -- the ink dissolved slowly after a few times. But I've never tried with sharpie. Maybe try repeated soak in alcohol + magic eraser & repeat.

I've tried bleach on a couple old ASM chips as a test, and I can say DO NOT USE BLEACH FULL STRENGTH -- the bleach ate away at the chip material itself - it started to disintegrate after soaking for 20-30 min or so - the surface became very chalky and rough. Of course, with cleaners, it depends on the strength and dilution of the cleaner and exposure time for the chip - maybe bleach diluted with 5 or 10 parts water wouldn't damage the chip. But I'd test it first on a spare chip if you have one.

Didn't seem to, I used the remover very sparely and spot scrubbed lightly just with a paper towel, didn't dunk the chip. A few of them smudged just a bit, but I think that was more because those particular chips were dirty and I got lazy and tried to use the same spot on the paper towel for multiple chips. Note it did "dry" out the chip and leave the area with a little white haze, so they needed a bit of oil to even out the color again. Will post some pictures either later tonight or in the morning.

Here are some pictures:

Comparison (all cleaned chips have been oiled at this point)

Has anyone tried hand sanitizer? That will remove sharpie from your hands. Should be gentle enough for chips

I've not tried it on chips but I have used it on some other stuff. You're correct that it is effective at removing ink but it tends to leave a cloudy residue. Hand sanitizers have lots of added ingredients that could be causing this: perfumes, lotions and gelling agents.
