I'm new here and was looking at a youtube video about Paulson values. It was done by a Brit and he had about 300 Paulson chips that he bought and then re-labeled as (I'm assuming fictitious) Jack Casino, Cardiff UK,
.

Then I found a thread here on PCF where somebody did the same thing for the same label: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...ack-casino-cardiff-old-school-cash-set.50903/

I'm curious why people would do this. I mean I get that you can have a set of Paulsons that show a single casino, fictitious or not, but I didn't think you could scrape the existing compressed inlay off (at least easily) so I'm thinking you'd have to glue new stickers over the existing inlays. Is this a common thing?

Yes, very common. People who want customize Paulson chips or create a chip for a denomination that doesn't exist or is hard to find. You can either relabel over the existing inlay or remove the inlay and replace with a label/sticker, whichever way is just personal preference.

There is a whole forum category for it: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/forums/poker-chip-labeling.28/

Reasons:
Helps with game security.
Gives people something unique/personal on one of the better bases.
Fills in set gaps - either not made or not really available.

It's common in this community. I would say others lean more towards custom sets or labels on cheaper chips.

Paulson Classic has a blue $10 which is mostly pointless, so relabel to quarter or other desired denom.

I asked the same thing when I first started this hobby (2 months ago). I thought wouldn’t this de-value the chips? The answer seems to be no, because there is a huge sector of this group that love a relabel project.

Take a look at the voting right now for best re-label of 2021. Most of these sets are incredible and very well planned out.

There is also some great label vendors and graphic designers on PCF as well that make the relabel look very professional.

I am currently down the relabel rabbit hole and am finding designing/configuring my own set of Paulsons to be really fun.

Hey hey! That video is mine, and I've literally just finished replying to your comment on YouTube — but will repeat here for others.

Using the "overlabel" method (as opposed to full inlay replacement) essentially allows you to create semi-custom chips, whilst giving you the flexibility to remove them at a later date should you decide to sell them (which I did with these).

Having peeled off the overlabel and cleaned the residue, I'm left with the original inlay – and chip – intact. This helps preserve their value thanks to the fact that people can still buy them as they're meant to be.

Ah, good explanation, thanks. I definitely learned something today.
Preparing chips for relabeling can take a lot of work, do be prepared. But the results are fabulous!
Yeah, it really does look like work. I saw an eBay ad for Paulson WCOP and on closer inspection it appeared that they might be stickers as one shown was really off. So if these really are Paulson chips with a WCOP inlay, then this one was a blem...

That's a legit WSOP chip with its original inlay. Believe it was a WSOP Circuit event, or something similar.
