Hi all,

I’m planning on hosting a tournament soon, with rebuys, and I’m wondering, would you change the payout structure at all for a tourney with rebuys vs one without rebuys?

I’m just wondering if I should make the payouts a bit more top heavy, because many players will be in for 2 or 3 buy ins, instead of one.

Do your # of payouts base on actual number of Players and not Buyin + Rebuyin
Agree. When we play little STTs, we payout 2, when 6-7 players and 3, when 8-9 players. We usually allow a rebuy. Most often there are 4-5 rebuys. These increase the payout according to percentage distribution.

Prize pool payouts is a percentage of the pot. Don't change it. That top prize will raise up on its own
100% agree with this. The whole point of a re-buy is to try again to win the pot or to get in the paying top X. The more people that do it, the more the pot grows. Don't change the percentage. It will be more worth it with more re-buys.

Not that this should matter much for a small home tournament, but in my experience, rebuys do not affect the number of payouts, but re-entries do.
What’s the difference?
A rebuy is done from your seat - you’re the same tournament player, you’re just adding on to your stack. With a re-entry, your tournament is over. You get your things and you leave. You go to the window, and enter the tournament as a new player with a new ticket to a new seat. The house may rake rebuys and re-entries differently.

The distinctions can be subtle, especially for small home tournaments. But you may have stumbled upon the distinction that matters the most. If you want to pay more players, you can set it up as a re-entry tournament and then you wouldn’t be doing anything abnormal.

In most of my games regardless of how much money is put in first/second 70/30, if 2+ tables 3rd place is 1x buy in.
*Prize pool is also sometimes used for pizza/sandwich orders, often this replaces 3rd place.

The more rebuys, the bigger the pot baby, percentages work just fine for payout

I do my payouts based on total entries including re-entries. Typically 3 spots for 9-12 entries, 4 spots for 13-18 entries. Even if there are only 8 players, if we get 5 rentries, I will pay a 4th spot.

This is typically how it is done in larger scale casino tournaments as well.

Similar to what we do, except for a hard rule to always pay less than 50% of the field size.

So 8 players would pay a maximum of 3 places, regardless of entries/re-entries/re-buys.

Count the rebuys just as if a separate player bought in and use your % based on that number of players. If someone is in deep that is on them. Most home like a broader payout, unless you are specifically only paying a few places to be top heavy. But if it’s that kind of tournament I want to know going in.

Doesn‘t the money from the rebuys go into the same “pot” like a re-entry?

Assuming no rake in the home game, does it matter if you consider it a rebuy instead of a re-entry?

Thanks.

Usually with a reentry the player is reseated and can be at a new spot.

When doing reentries do players need to reenter immediately? Or anytime during the reentry period?

Anytime during the re-entry period.

When doing re-entry tournaments, we consider every re-entry as a new player. This increases the number of places being paid.
