How difficult is the process to re-label chips. I am thinking of re-labeling Pharaoh chips. Basically my process of thinking is it is cheaper to re-label these than buy the custom colors that I am looking to have in a small cash set. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are lots of threads on this. The tl;dr version is that it is not challenging once you get the hang of it, but it is a tedious and labor intensive process. If you are a little more impatient, you can try milling as an option as well.

(Said as I tediously remove inlays myself, lol).

You mention Pharaoh's... are they the Paulson Pharaoh's (inlaid chips) or the china clay Pharaoh's (labels). Labels are substantially easier to remove than inlays. msuroo is showing inlay removal above.

This is true - I jumped to conclusions there. For a labeled chip (like a China clay), its just peeling the sticker and putting a new one on. That can take a little effort too depending on how much adhesive gets left behind, but it is certainly less work than removing a Paulson inlay.

OK, so I do not have the chips yet and will be china clays. Let me ask this question, as I am very new to the game. And I truly hope I don't get dragged for this, haha. Is there a huge difference between the china clay and the paulson besides the price?

Pharaoh's are gross! Nobody but me likes them, so I can take them off your hands. :ROFLMAO:jk jk

But seriously speaking, I'd go with @grantc54's suggestion! He's a seasoned veteran!

Doing a level 2 edge pots on CPC, it costs 1.82 a chip. That would be 910.00 for 500 chips. I would assume it would much less using china clays and getting labels for them seeing how Pharaoh on apache are .42 a chip.

It’s an innocent question if you haven’t handled them before, but the answer is definitely yes. That said, custom labels for China clays are a perfectly reasonable budget option, and you don’t even need to buy pharaohs and peel the labels off - you can buy blanks!

That said, “get samples” is clearly the first step here.

I did look into that, but I like the color options of the edging of the Pharaoh. That is the only reason I would choose them. I definitely will get samples. I appreciate your response and help.

There is a reason these guys are suggesting getting samples....

From reading this thread, I am not sure you really understand the difference between various Types chips. All chips are not made the same way and depending on how they are made they have a very different look/feel/sound etc. True Compression Clay chips produced the old school way have a certain look & feel to them. Depending on where you get this type of chip from it is going to cost somewhere north of $1/chip and most of the time quite a bit more. If you are buying new, the only place this type of chip is available is from CPC - Classic Poker Chips: http://www.classicpokerchips.com/pokerchips/realclaypokerchips.htm if you dig around on there you will see what I am talking about. Prices start around $1/chip and go all the way up to about $6/chip depending on how complicated you want to get. Paulson also makes this type of chip and that is what you see in more US Casinos than any other chip, but currently Paulson does not sell to the public. They only sell to Casinos and card rooms.

The Paulson Pharaoh were a group buy that was the most successful group buy ever 15 yrs ago on ChipTalk which is now defunct. If memory serves correctly at that time Paulson had agreed to sell to us if we met a 50,000 chip minimum. We did that and Paulson made the chips. Those chips can be found from time to time here on m2m and on e-bay. I just did an e-bay search for "Sold" & "paulson pharaoh poker chips" & I come up with 4 auctions with a rack each and they all sold for $280 so that is $2.80/chip. Some of your confusion is because you are mixing up Paulson Pharaoh's and CC Pharaoh's. CC (stands for China Clay) are what you are seeing on Apache. China Clays are NOT the same as Compression Clays made by Paulson. The chips you see on Apache for 42¢ are China Clays. I am not making a judgment on one or the other, but they are significantly different.

Based on my above explanation I think most will agree that getting samples is a really good advice so you can make an informed decision.

I think we all, as a group, should consider an alternate nomenclature for China Clay. The term itself causes confusion, especially amongst new chippers, because it implies some sort of similarity in process, material, or cost compared to compression clay (which there isn't). We can't simply just call them "plastics" because the term too general. How about:

Budget / Low-end Injection Molded Plastic (BLIMP) to cover the sluggers that we all know and love
Composite / Higher-end Injection Molded Plastic (CHIMP) to cover our various CC level of quality/price
Premium Injection Molded Plastic (PIMP) for the Abbiati, B&G, Bud Jones, and Matsui brands

I love it....
BLIMP, CHIMP and PIMP
I'm all for it
