Hello all, I'm new to the forum and wanted to ask a newbie question if I may. I've been away from poker for 7-8 years, but I've regained the itch now that my kids are getting a little older and I have more time to play. I had some nevada jack ceramics years ago, but sold them off several years back. So, I've been searching the market for a home cash game set. I thought about the china clays after watching the hobbyphillic videos, but then i stumbled upon his review of the atlantic club chips from CPC. I liked them, but need some smaller denominations than what they offer. So, now I'm leaning towards my own custom set from CPC. I'm in no way a tech savvy guy anymore. Tech has blown past me. I do think I can figure out the paint shop pro software and come up with something I will like. That said, how hard is it to get approval from CPC on the inlays with regard to trademark infringements? Like, can I somewhat rip-off some of the other chips out there, whether they be stock or casino? I was thinking about making something like "The Oasis resort & casino" inlay with some palm trees on the side and the denomination in the middle. However, I believe there is or once was an Oasis casino. Is that a big no-no? Also, there's some stock chips called "Monaco". I like these as well, but could I create my own version with that name? If not, then I'd likely go with my own silly title like "Drawing Dead poker club", or "The Atlantis Resort & Casino". I don't know. Just something fake. Any help here is appreciated. Thanks

Start with @Gear. He's the go-to guy on PCF for labels, and does some design work, as well. I'm sure he knows plenty about trademark issues, as well.

There are a few guys who do great design work on PCF as well, including @Johnny5, @ttttubby, @p5woody. Good luck!

And welcome to PCF. You'll get lots of great ideas for how to spend your money! :D

CPC will not violate trademarks. However, many companies will grant you licenses for personal use. I got one from Pabst for natty boh chips I did about 8 years ago.

Lots of great designers here and I think it’s awesome you’re doing a custom set. You won’t regret it.

Buy a sample set from CPC and definitley use the chip tool they provide and also linked here on PCF.

CPC will make lower denom chips of the Atlantic Club chips. It could take longer to get the chips in hand because the "custom" chips are not stock items.

Welcome to the forum!
If you pay custom, CPC might be willing to do some changes to its Atlantic Club label.
Instead of speculating, however, get your information from the horse's mouth: Contact the firm's manager, @David Spragg , who is also a member here.
David has always been extremely helpful, and a great person to work with.
Of course, get color and mold samples. And don't rush. Have many ideas digested.
Best of luck, and welcome again!

CPC does respect obvious trademarks, but if the circumstances are right, plausible deniability is a thing. :ninja:

I won't say much more than look at my upcoming Horseshoe set - link in signature - the OP and the photo a few posts down, #14.

This also applies to the Paradise set, but to a much lesser degree - only style copied, no logo. We have some Aria/Bellagio lookalikes here too, and more than one member owns Mapes lookalikes afaik.

Just check with David once you have something halfway tangible like a mockup, like people already suggested. He's very down to earth.

Definitely do hire a designer for your inlays if you don't have an eye for it or the skills to handle professional graphics software. CPCs are way too expensive to make mistakes with subpar homemade designs.

Can't agree more.
It's worth the money to hire a designer. Especially one with experience with chip inlay/label design.

Thanks for all the input and info. You've given me much to consider. So, can someone give me a ballpark figure of what it may run me to hire someone to design an inlay?I'm just curious and have no clue what the price range can be. I've been toying with the CPC design tool for a few weeks and I feel great about the colors. So, it's the inlay design that I'm most worried about at this point. Thanks again for all the input.

Prices vary greatly. I've paid anywhere from $0 to $250+

Factors include: artist, time spent, complexity of design, number of different designs, etc.

I’ll put a vote in that you design something totally custom and unique to you. If you are going to spend that much on custom chips why make them look like the various fantasy chips available to everyone?

With you on that one. As long as you're not a Casino, actually even then, your own chips should feel like your own IMO. I have my own design ready, nothing fancy, but self made.

Either that or a cool generic design like Paulson Niors. I personally never had an interest in “fantasy” chips or chips from casinos. I may be the only one on this forum though

For a non custom stock chip I’m really liking these

They look good, a bit like the Scrolls. Sadly ceramics just don't do it for me :(
