That's something I'm thinking about since I've started to work with laser cutters and wood. Last weekend I've found some mother of pearl thin plaques and I've decided to try to do some marquetry on a dealer button...

This is a very early prototype, some inserts are missing due to cut issues, some letters are broken, but the overall result is not that bad.

On the next prototype, I'll try to make a wider cut inside the wood to be able to make black epoxy joints between the mother of pearl and the wood.

c'est sympa et sinon du métal en lieu du nacre se serait pas plus facile ? genre métal brossé et bois ca le fait
And with metal instead of mother of pearl ? brushed metal & wood are nice together

@Tienou59 I can't cut metal with my cutter but it's a good idea.
@1A25R for this prototype it's only glued with cyanoacrylate but for the next one I will use black epoxy to fill the gaps and why not only epoxy.

How thick was the pearl you used? 1 or 1,7 mm? There are UFC on the market that are 3 mm thick.
Btw: if you can cut chipco chips there are a lot (I have some) of low value on the market.
I have been working on a personal metal inlay chip but just don't have the tools.
Hope you made your personal dealer button, love to see it. Jo

Hi Steevbe,
Thanks for your interest in this post. After the first prototype, I didn't try to make other pieces...

Around 1mm. That's hand-worked mother of pearl and the thickness varies :/

Nice work...after sanding/polish it will look great imho
1 mm MOP must be difficult to work with ?

Ps. I think will be a winner for wooden custom chip cases

1 mm is to thin indeed.
I think you have to look for a 3 mm thickness. There are some cheap plaques from Uruguay or UFC you can use.
Casino jetons/plaques came in thickness starting from 1,7 mm up to 5 mm.
My personal project. The well known SBM roulette chips. First sanded them down and then drilled.
The meaning was to make a coin inlay personal chip. The rim would be personalised.
Stopped due of lack of equipment. Jo

You mean the read mother-of-pearl you use for your project ?

My 2 cents : It looks like plastic to me. Some plastic really don't like the lasercut :/ The unburned part could appear because of density differences where there is more of the "mother-of-pearl" mica powder used to generate the effect.

The mother of pearl I used is like animal horn. When you burn it, it smells the same.

Don't think that would be so difficult. It's just a matter of finding a good shop and shop owner knowing all from plastics.
You Tube is your friend also. Maybe you get some interesting ideas there?
What would you put in the DB? Letters in MOP? In wood? In gold?

Maybe difficult to make a silicone mold !?!

No it shouldn't be difficult to make a silicon mold based on a disc and letters on top.
I was thinking of a silicone DB?
A soft DB that can be twisted and that it bounces if it falls to the ground.
In my opinion, the bouncing instead of breaking when it falls is a good point...
But... Why would a DB fall on the ground ? Plus, the silicone DB will not slide on the table felts, it will stick to it :/
