Background
Looking forward to upgrading to a denomination cash set, coming from dice chips. We started years ago playing tournament style with winner takes all or split pot if running late in the evening. As guys had kids and more responsibility some could stay later than others. We then moved to a $20 buy in cash game with re-buys but with progressively bigger blinds. Starting .10/.20 doubling every 45 mins or so. Towards end of night could be $2/$4 or even $4/$8 to try to force action and get done to one to two winners. Early on .10/.20 everyone is in on almost every hand because why not it is normally .20 to see the flop. As the night progresses action gets tighter with fewer in the pot as it should

Question
I am just checking if playing a cash game do others raise their blinds throughout the night?
If so I am thinking of having a min $0.25 chip in my set and if I keep the progressive style start with $0.25/$0.25 and move to $0.25/$0.50 and up. If you increase blinds do you normally double after a period of time or a more slow progression?

Or is it best to have a straight up $0.25/$0.50 cash game?

Appreciate input and thoughts.

Reloading for $20 when the blinds are .25/.50 (40 BBs) doesn't leave Much room for post flop poker. I wouldn't consider it for my group, but if this is what the majority of yours likes then go for it.

We typically play 5¢/10¢ cash games, and sometimes late in the evening when all of the stacks are $40-100, we remove the nickels and play .25/.25, and raise buy in max from $20 to $40, but only if everyone agrees. By that time, most pre-flop opens are 60-75¢ or more, so it doesn't really affect much.

Hey, do what works for you and your players, but I’ve never raised the blinds in a cash game, nor have I ever played in a cash game where the blinds were raised.
I know there are some cash games where, when there’s a lot of money on the table later in the night they’ll raise the blinds - it’s definitely done.
But progressively raising the blinds multiple times in a cash game? No, that’s not a thing I’ve ever heard of.

Here’s my thought. If you guys feel the need to get it down to one or two winners, maybe your stakes aren’t high enough. Like, if a guy is buying in for $20, and has no interest in cashing out for $25 - he either wants all or nothing, then maybe the money doesn’t matter to him and maybe you should be playing for higher stakes.
As I said before, if you guys like what’s happening then good for you. But it really isn’t a cash game.

Definitely do what works for your group, as others have said. My regular group used to play non-standard formats and did whatever worked. Over time as players started playing in other home games or casinos, we started playing more “standard” just to try to outgrow some “bad” habits/practices not used elsewhere.

If you want to have a tournament-like ending to the game with fewer “winners” but people can come and go as they please unlike a tournament, then that’s cool.

If you just want less limping when the blinds are minuscule compared to stack sizes, raising the blinds at certain times definitely works.

Which is your goal or the goal of the group for the end of the night?

I agree. We may need to go to a .25/.25 blinds and try a night with just that and let the pots naturally grow. I really don’t want to get into nickel chips.

I agree. There is too much action early on indicating blinds need to be higher. .25/.25 give 80 bb. Later in evening by a certain time we could raise to .25/.50.

If I did succumb to getting a barrel or two of nickels. Would blinds be .10/.25 or best to just go .25/.25?
