At one point I was really trying to think out of the box... Like, maybe a poker table should be shaped like a giant guitar pick? With the pointy end chopped off for the dealer?

I like 56", it's a good balance of space for 8, and less of a reach for the middle. If the players are bigger/taller, then 60" probably isn't a bad idea for more space.

Well... A guitar pick is pretty close to a reuleaux, an obscure geometric shape formed by the intersection of three circles. I actually think this could make sense for a 9-handed game (or 8-handed with a dealer), three people to a side:

My Dad loved this pick and used it exclusively. He was really smart, so it must be the perfect shape.......

Well, I threw it together just for fun. But I don’t actually think it would be tighter than most casino racetracks, especially when they cram in 10 players. Typically the chairs on the long sides have their armrests practically touching.

Nice. (What’s the source?) My preferred number for NLHE is actually 7. It allows for a smaller table (less reaching) and yet more seating space. Everyone has to be more involved than with 8-10, without players feeling like they have to get involved with too many hands, as can happen with 6 or fewer. Seven-handed also deters OMCs from just sitting and waiting for multiple orbits to be dealt premiums.

But seriously ... I’ve played on 60" round resin banquet tables plenty of times (too many times) in firehouse/VFW/Legion hall games. Like these:

On the upside, if they limit it to 8 per table, it’s nice and roomy, and you can see everyone well, since all players are sitting on a curve.

With 9, it sucks because these tables typically have four legs built out near the edge, so 1-2 people wind up having to straddle (a leg). A round table really needs to be on a pedestal, IMHO.

The other big downside is that the people with the longest arms (usually me) wind up pushing all the pots, because the distances are pretty long for many players. Shorter people have to stand up a lot, if others don’t help. It’s really just a little too wide for comfort.

I knew a guy who brought one of those croupier’s sticks to such games for this very reason.

I wouldn’t play on a 60" round again if I could avoid it. Even knocking it down to 58-57" would make a big difference.

It's really no different than a holdem table with 10 people. The players on the ends require chips pushed to them from the players in the center...

Imagine a 48in round PCF topper on 56in folding-legs table.
A marvel at an incredibly low price. Mobile too :)

The problem I see here is if your trying to squeeze 8 on a table you might as well build a 10 player holdem table. Otherwise shrink it to a 6 player table...

A 48" round table is perfect for 6 players. Anything bigger gets awkward. You give up the reach benefit...

I've owned and played both 8 person and 6 person. The 6 person is a very efficient card table.

Yeah, I (risking being wrong) think that the topic proved that the minimum round diameter for 8 elbow-wise, which is 59-60in, is too much for reaching the centre.
On a roundish oval, 6 people out of 8 can reach the centre.

I built the 60" first then I built the 48". Thereis an amount of space difference as well...

When I finished my rec room, it seemed like I had plenty of space. Couch, chair and entertainment center. Room for a bar was no problem....Texas holdem took off and card Play became popular. Now adding a ten seat table becomes a problem.... so consider a table based on the amount of space you have...

The best balance balance is 48" round. That's why there are so many kitchen tables made this size with leafs

For 6 players, a 46in round is ideal, while 48in is imperial / overkill. The equivalent would be 64in for 8 players...

It depends on the goal for me the table needs a 1"-1.5" hangover with a cup and handle under the playing surface. So if I'm using a 36" piece of glass I need about 6" wood edge for cup holders to be built I the table too allow for the hangover. You need this spacing to so the handles donet get caught on your clothing...
