So I mentioned in my intro post that I’ve played poker in 123 casinos and counting, with a chip taken from each. I figured I’d pass along a story...

My wife’s family is from Chicago, so every trip out there, I always tried to hit some casinos. One year not too long ago I headed up to Milwaukee and found myself in my first ever casino that still used a frac in live play (50c).

Here’s the thing though. Up until this point I had always taken a $1 chip from ever room I’d played and so I took a $1 from this place too.

Months later, I still couldn’t get that 50c chip out of my mind though! But my ‘rule’ was a $1 chip! After months of fighting in my head I came to the only logical conclusion:

Change my ‘rule’ to be: take the lowest domination chip in play at the time of my visit. Reasoning: at some point before I die (hopefully), $1 chips will be a thing of the past too so I’m really just making a future-proofed change to the rule!

A year later, was back in Chicago visiting the in-laws...and took the 3hr round trip back up to Milwaukee just to collect my one and only 50c chip from live play!
So now the real fun...who is just as OCD vs. who thinks I’m a complete lunatic??

Not crazy just a chip collector. I just drove 1100 miles to hit 10 casinos just to see what they had.

i had the chip you needed on my site (Rubes Casino Chips). If you are missing any others give me a shout.

i read this thread as "Potamophobia", which is phobia suffered by most of the players in my pokerrrr home game.

Were there any clay fracs being used or just the ceramic ones? I need just one of the clay Paulson fracs from there.

If $1 becomes obsolete at some point, you can always switch to the next one, but I wouldn't be able not to have a $1 chip from all casinos (incl. the ones with fracs)

I think you're missing out on a wonderful opportunity here: start a collection "$1 and every chip below from all the casino's I've visited" :D

It was probably 5-10 years ago so I honestly don’t remember. Even if there were though, things may have changed.

Out of curiosity how are they using it in live play.

Here on the good side of the St. Croix, at Canterbury park outside of Minneapolis, I only see the 50c chips used in a live play for antes in 2/4 (and occasionaly 3/6) limit stud games. (They also use them in the blackjack pit to pay blackjacks because they do not have snappers.)

(it may be a moot point anyway, I think COVID killed off 2/4 stud since it only ran during "Aces Always Win" on Tuesdays, which has been discontinued. And to throw out an insensitive sterotype, let's just say that game tended to be populated by the more vulnerable members of the population.)

Both St Croix casinos use them for BlackJack too, I assumed it was a Wisconsin thing to not have snappers maybe, but I think Aces is the same too. Grand Casino uses snappers.

I'm about 90% sure TI Red Wing uses snappers. I haven't played Blackjack there in a looooong time though.

To be honest, I don’t remember! It was a 2/4 limit hold’em table so it didn’t have anything to do with the blinds. I seem to remember the dealer frequently breaking a dollar chip from the pot and putting half into either the rake or a jackpot, etc?

Hmm, would be interesting if they are taking the rake to the half dollar instead of a dollar. Otherwise players at these limits tipping halves isn't that unusual. But I wouldn't call using them for tipping "in play." Using them in the rake would be.

They take rake up by the dollar. They introduced RHC yellow fracs about 3-4 years ago i believe. they are a great candidate for a relabel.

That begs the question as to how 50c chips would ever get into a 2/4 pot.

I just checked my log and it looks like it was 2013 and 2014 when I played there. Maybe rake was different back then? Or like I said...something they were doing to split rake out for a promo or something?

Sorry...but my memory is pretty fuzzy at this point beyond the fact that there were more than a few on the table and I’m reasonably sure the dealer was turning ones into them from time to time.

Understandable, last time I played there was in 2006, IIRC, and I don't remember 50c getting put in pots. I played 2/4 full kill I think.

The .50 chips at Minnesota and Wisconsin are mostly used to pay black jack wins. 5.00 bet yields 7.50 payout and if they don’t have 2.50 snapper this is the way. In Oklahoma they use them mostly for ante they collect on all the tables games.

Late reply to this thread, but, what brand of chip is this? I like the edge design and the feel of the face of the old potawatomi chips.

also, I was in Milwaukee over the weekend and their poker room is still closed… How is that still the case?

The "brand" is unidentified. But they are full face printed ceramic chips.
Ah thanks for the info, I really like the look and feel of these, I may look into a ceramic set, I like the look of the scroll chips, but I don't like the textured finish, it makes the graphic look low resolution.
