Over the next year I'll be doing a series of articles re: building sets for the CCA magazine, as well as focusing on playable casino chip sets. I'll also be chatting with some of their directors to look at offering playable sets for their members using their annual club chips.

In this thread I'd like you to post your preferred single-table 25c/50c NLHE/PLO breakdown, along with a very brief synopsis of why its ideal for you/your poker crew. Listing how many players you regularly have at your table would also be helpful. If your breakdown would differ between NLHE and PLO, please list both breakdowns and identify which is which.

If you don't commonly play 25c/50c NLHE or PLO, please refrain from posting.

Please, keep debate/discussion to a minimum in this thread. A breakdown that works for you may be trash for another person's game for various reasons. My purpose here is simply to solicit a variety of opinions, not the "best" opinion.

For me, my ideal breakdown is this:

100x 25c
200x $1
200x $5
80x $25
20x $100

We'll regularly have between 5-9 players. Game plays a bit tight.

If I had to build a set for these stakes from scratch today it would include:

100 x 25¢
400 x $1
200 x $5
80 x $20
20 x $100

Assuming $100 buy-ins for everyone (rarely happens) this accommodates 20-40-11 stacks for the first 5 players to buy-in and and 0-40-12 stacks for the next 5 initial buy-ins. The remaining $5s, $20s, and $100s can be used for re-buys/color-ups as needed. This is way more bank than I need for my regular crowd.

600 chips, single-table (typically 6-9 players)

100 x 25c
200 x $1
200x $5
100 x $20

$100 plaques if needed.

Some sets have more $1 chips, but those are the minimum counts.

For a one table, $0.25/$0.50 NLHE or PLO "only" set, meaning the set does not have to be flexible, this is my preferred breakdown Scott:

100 x $0.25
300 x $1s
500 x $5s
100 x $25s

In my game we use a $20 buy in or half of largest stack rebuy. We usually have 8-10 players

100x 25c
200x $1
200x $5
80x $25
20x $100

Edit: I do prefer to have 120 x 25c and adjust accordingly if I have a full 10 at the table

I regularly play .25/.50 NLHE but it's a small table with odd buy-ins so my breakdown might not be too helpful.

Usually we have 4-6 players and usually everybody's first buy-in is $20. The table plays loose, so further buy-ins happen often and range from $10 to $50+

For this game, I use:

100 x .25
200 x 1.00
100 x 5.00
25 x $20
5 x $100

If the game was to approach full-table size, I guess I'd like to have a second rack of $5's, and maybe more $20's.

For $20 starting stacks I give out 12 quarters, 12 dollars and a five. I make the rebuys heavier in $5's - typically a buck or two in quarters and some singles -early in the night and all in $5's or $20's as the night moves on. There's one guy who always wants a $20 on his first rebuy, which is fine, but I like to make sure there are enough $5's out there before I hand out more.
I know some people like lots of chips, but I don't ever see a reason to have more than 4-5 dollars worth of quarters, per player, on average, on the table ever.

Sir,

We play HOPES at .25/.50 blinds with a 100 max buy in. I'll list my preferred starting stacks/chipset.

20161109_190016_zpsilddv277.jpg

12 x .25
17 x 1
16 x 5

The first 4 rebuys are done all in fives. Then I move to the twenty fives for the additional rebuys.

140 x .25
200 x 1
300 x 5
100 x 25
10 x 100

My $0.25/$0.50 game is a short stack game - $20 max buy in. Even so there will be $400 to $600 on the table later in the night. We normally will have a full table ( 9 or 10 players ) but by the end of the night be down to five or less.

Starting stacks are 20 x $0.25 and 15 x $1 = $20.

The bank:

200 x $0.25
300+ x $1
100 x $5

I do play sets with enough one dollar chips that we might not even need the fives. Say something like 200 x $0.25 / 500 x $1. In that case the game uses only two chips.

I use 200 fractional chips rather than 100 because I want to limit players making change. Twenty fractional chips or more help keep change making to a minimum.

100 x $.25
200 x $1
400 x $5
80 x $25
20 x $100

I like a lot of $5's on the table and most of the time the $25's won't even be needed unless there is a full table and several re-buys.

Sometimes though we do play $.25/.50 with $200 max to have a very deep game. Then the $25's see play for sure.

Usually 6-10 players

200 x .25
200 x $1
200 x $2
200 x $3
300 x $5
60 x $25

$100 available if needed

$2 and $3's probably unnecessary but guys like having a lot of chips in front of them!!!

Here's my NLHE breakdown for single table .25/.50
$20min / $100max table buyin, with 3/4 big-stack max rebuy...

140 x .25
600 x 1.00
80 x 5.00 plaques
25 x 20.00 plaques

Bank = $1,535

$100 plaques are on standby if needed

We typically have 8-9 guys with a table average buyin of $80 each. At most we'll have 4 rebuys on a typical night, which will give us about $1,000 in play. We really don't see much beyond that on the average night, as my crew can be fairly nitty with their money.

I've had an occasional game where booze/new-players loosened up play a bit and we ended up swapping out the plaques for red 5.00 chips, just to get more 20.00 plaques into play.

In general, the $1.00 is my workhorse, and the guys like having big stacks of chips in front of them. And the $5.00 plaques add a fun "baller" element as we get more rebuys/reloads.

In general, my goal is to try and mimic typical casino $1/$2 tables, where you'll have about 100 dollar-chips in play, about 500-600 five-dollar-chips on the table, and a small amount of "high denoms" being passed around. I like to copy this for my lower stakes setup.

I host a dealer's choice game that mainly plays PLO/PL08 but with a host of crazy games like triple flop Omaha or Badugi we play FL. I play in a few other games around town that are basically the same. My preferred set is:

200x .25
400x $1.00
300x $5.00
40x $20/$25

I'm in the camp that wants more chips on the table. Big stacks = loose action.

100 x 25c
120x $1
130x $5
40x $25
10x $100

$100 buyin 9-10 players. Starting stack is 12/12/12/1. My players (and dealers) are smooth at making change. When players are making a $25 bet, they use the $25 chip.

400 chip set. Works surprisingly well.

For my .25/.50c NLHE game. 40 dollar minimum buyin. 100 max. 6-8 players. Plays like a .05/.10c game though in terms of betting. Lots of min bets or 1.25 bets.

200x .25
200x 1
80x 5
20x 20
10x 100

Total Bank $2050

My ideal setup:

$0.25/$0.50 NLHE
8 Player Max
$100 Max Buy In (200BB)

Breakdown:

100 x $0.25
300 x $1 (workhorse)
200 x $5
80 x $25
20 x $100
-----
700 ($5325)

$100 Max Starting Stacks:

12 x $0.25
37 x $1 (lots of workhorse)
12 x $5
-----
61 ($100)

$100 Max Rebuys:

10 x $5
2 x $25

Common Considerations:

1) 100 vs 200 quarters
2) number of workhorse chips
3) $20 vs $25 chip

We've been playing at least 5 years.
Typically 7 players.
Social game

Buyins:

1st - $15
2nd, when down to $2, $15.
3rd, when down to $2, $20.

Our "rule" is $50 max buyins, but we've never turned anyone down. Most of these guys never played much poker, and some still don't aspire to, so the structure was meant to keep the game fun and cheap.

Stacks:

12 x .25
8 x .50
8 x 1.00

Gus keep telling how horrible it is to have .25 and .50 chips on the table, but no one has ever died because of it.

I admit, on loose nights, there can be a lot of .25 chips, so after the first buyin, I delve out more .50/1. to keep too many .25 off the table.

Interesting to see how much everyone likes their $1s.
I've been playing in a weekly $0.25/$0.50 NLHE game for about ten years.
Anywhere from 4-10 players.
$20 min, $60 max
If we play for more we raise the blinds

500 chips

120 x $0.25
120 x $1
200 x $5
60 x $25

Each player gets

12 x $0.25
12 x $1
1 x $5
For their first $20 and the remainder of the buy-in is made up of $5s

All chip-ups are made with $5s and then $25's if we run out (rarely happens).

I love to issue out full barrels of quarters and $1's to start, then add $5's until the desired starting stack is achieved (typically $60-100). Full ring, up to 10 players

Starting stacks are

20x$.25
20x$1
15x$5

Simple, and easy to distribute (as the banker). All rebuys with $5's or $25's

Requires a set:

200 x $.25
200 x $1
200 x $5
100 x $25

My preference would be to have a set with more $5's (I have over 1000 x $5's in my main cash set, and we play primarily $.25/.50.) That said, I rarely go beyond a third rack of $5's for a single table. Not everyone buys in for the max $100.

My current set is:
160 x $.25
200 x $1
100 x $5
20 x $20 plaques
10 x $100 plaques
= bank of $2140 (have come close to running out of chips)

600 chips, single-table (typically 6-9 players)

100 x 25c
200 x $1
200x $5
100 x $20

$100 plaques if needed.

Been thinking about minimum set that plays well with up to ten players... I came up with this:

100 x 25c
200 x $1
200x $5

10 x $100 chips or plaques

This complete set can fit in a 500-piece case; $100 plaques fit in the spaces allocated for decks of cards. $2225 bank in a 500-piece case. The ten hundos give you as much headroom as 100 $20s would, at a big savings in chip count.

Other games may play bigger, but my 50 cent games do not. I have a $1 game that usually fits in this bank.

This case closes just fine:
