Interested thread. I just read all comments now. I am really surprised by the lack of people using a poker bankroll? Up until last December when I joined pcf and started playing the P* tournies with you guys it was years since I played poker. I started my bankroll of $100 in PayPal for poker tournaments. That's 6-10 buy ins. I did come close to losing it, but I managed to run hot in January. I ran it up over $1000 (to date) and spent $550 on Paulson's (casino used) mixed set. I took some of that out for my live games and now have over $1400 on hand for live. So I play only small stakes until my bankroll can manage bigger games. I don't go to casinos and pay rake, only home games and local tournaments.

On a side note to keep the non poker playing wife happy, I give her 10% of winnings over $100. Let me tell you she loves when I go play poker now (-:

I really do suggest all people of having a bankroll for poker. Even if you only play once a month for $25. Well at the end of the year you can track how you did. Why not? Maybe I'm just weird but I want to know if I'm flushing my personal work money down the toilet every week or I'm winning. If I'm losing why, and how can I change it. I guess I'm to competitive idk....

I keep a bankroll, and I do track play sessions. It has lots of advantages even if you're not playing professionally.

It enables you to detect leaks in your game or poor game selection in a timely manner, and can help prevent you from developing self-destructive behavior (starting to play with money you can't afford to lose) by keeping your funds clearly separated, keeping you vigilant, always seeing how the cash flows between them.

My ideal was and is to set aside a sufficiently big chunk of money from my income once, and never having to replenish this fund by playing break-even or better. Even if you already know that you are a losing player and are willing to regularly feed your habit with fresh money from your income, it is better to keep track of just how much money you are spending on it, once again, to stay vigilant and not sliding into the mentioned self-destructive spiral unaware.

In really bad times, when even your emergency budget is drained, you could tap into the bankroll and sort your more critical issues out first, then later slowly replenish the bankroll up to the amount you took from it. And if you steadily keep building that bankroll through play past the point where the additional reduction of risk of ruin at the stakes you play has become negligible, there is nothing wrong with withdrawing some of it and adding it to your other hobbies fund or whatever else comes up.

Unfortunately, I can't play for real money on the poker stars site smmfh. I have to live with play money :banghead:

Neither do they. Tournament buy-ins and payouts are handled via third party e-money transactions to an escrow. Or at least they were when I first learned of them.

We use play money on the site... We have tournament directors who collect Paypal payments and distribute it to the winners.

Nope. I like to say that with poker being a part of my life (albeit a very tiny part since moving to Iowa), any associated transactions such as wins, losses, chips, poker gear, etc. should come from my life roll. Just like DNegs, LOL! ***

When I did track my poker activities, I discovered that I was more focused on how each session would affect my graph than on playing good poker. Who needs that???

One of the women in Negreanu's life asked him what portion of his net worth was in his bankroll.

All of it!!!

I do not have a dedicated roll but really should and/or do a better job tracking live. It’s a lot easier to keep track of online, I started a spreadsheet over a year ago for my online accounts and I’ve seen growth there. I would be very interested to see my home game results had I tracked that.

I have a dedicated roll that used to add money to occasionally when I was building it, but I haven't had to add any once I made it to about 20 buy-ins. I use an app to track. If I somehow busted my roll, I would reload with a couple of buy-ins and maybe get some coaching.

Years ago, back in the times of limit poker I did. I did very well at $2/4 and $3/6 limit and rarely had a losing night. Man I miss those days! Used some of the cash to buy the custom set of ASMs I still use today.

Now I kind of do. I started keeping my winning separate to buy stuff my wife doesn’t think I need. I’m big into firearms and that is mostly what it goes to. She has a very difficult time understanding why that stuff costs so much :nailbite:Most of it came from $.25/.50 cash games and small buy in tourneys over the last few years. It grew it to a few thousand bucks.

If I’m playing in a $1/2 game or a $2/5 (rarely) I take money from that stash. Lower stakes usually just comes from my wallet.

I have a bankroll that I initially funded from profit generated from selling out of other hobbies. I keep this money entirely separate from everything else and I do not use it for anything except poker. No poker chips, no food, no nothing. This money is strictly for buyins into cash games and tournaments. I then track every session to monitor my game. I keep casino sessions and home game sessions separate. I was doing very well in both and had 2 really nasty casino runs that put a dent in the bank roll so I'm taking a break and sticking to house games to replenish some of the lost funds. Both sessions had sick sick sick beats so I don't feel bad about how I played but it still feels like dogshit regardless lol. Still positive overall which feels good.

I wish I was more dedicated to keeping detailed records. Every time I try I get lazy. The one time I was doing pretty well the app I was using crashed and I lost all the data.

I know I crush home games so I try to play them more as well. But my average casino win is still usually bigger than all but most biggest home game wins. Casino games have a lot more variance for me, both bigger wins and bigger losses but are still positive overall.

Knowing my hourly rate between them would be interesting, but I’m too lazy to keep track. By the time I finish playing I’m too tired to much of anything.

Same here. Casino wins are always huge relative to home games for me. My biggest casino win is basically almost my net profit for home games over the last 3-4 months lol. Sometimes we play short handed and there just isn't much money on the table. Purely to hang out with friends. But The consistent winning at homes games is nice. It puts me in a good poker mind-state and I tend to player better. I was tilting hard after those two bad casino sessions so I really needed a break from that environment and it was worth it. I've already recouped like 40% of what I lost in 3 home game sessions and I've just been a happier person :wow:

Poker Analytics 5. Awesome. So easy to use.
