I am wondering how many/which PNY chips I should keep. 95% sure I just want a heads up set. I am sure one day I will own a heads up table in the corner of my future game/music room. I already have a Le Noir HU set and a Rounders HU set coming once they are done. I have to keep some of these beautiful chips!! I really don't want to sell ALL my $5's either...grrrr.

So, here are the facts:
  • I will never buy more $500's or $1000's, thus a real tourney set is out.
  • I will never buy $1's, thus a cash set is out.
  • This is what I own:
    • 400 $5's
    • 200 $25 secondary
    • 280 $100 secondary
    • 20 $500 secondary
    • 5 $1000 secondary
    • 2 $5k plaques
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome and I thank you in advance. (this is hard stuffs because I needz them! they r special chips!!)

I'd keep a 150-pc heads-up tourney set:

40 x $5
40 x $25
40 x $100
20 x $500
10 x $1000

Breakdown can be used multiple ways, even for heads-up cash (divide by 100). Break your rule and buy 5 more $1000 chips, or sell the ones you have and keep the set at 140 chips.

Thanks Dave, great input (and so fast!). Makes a lot of sense in the realm of keeping some because I love them and will appreciate them. May I ask what breakdown you recommend for HU starting stacks? (just divide by 2, lol? or are some extras in this model?....5k plaques?)

In my eyes, a small-stack tournament heads-up set is:
40 x 5
40 x 25
20 x 100
and a large-stack tournament heads-up set is:
40 x 25
40 x 100
20 x 500
~or~
40 x 25
40 x 100
10 x 500
10 x1000
and combining those, I usually end up with:
40 x 5
40 x 25
40 x 100
20 x 500
10 x1000
or 150 total chips.

I run a lot of heads-up tournaments of varying types, so I have a bunch of heads-up sets -- and most of them are set up to handle both 5/25/100 and 25/100/500 stacks (see above). Here are a few starting stack variations:

A)
5/10 blinds, T1500 stacks (150BB):
20 x T5
20 x T25
9 x T100
-------------
49 chips = T1500
2 x T100 chips used to color-up T5 chips
(100 total chips in use)

B)
10/20 blinds, T2500 stacks (125BB):
20 x T5
20 x T25
19 x T100
-------------
59 chips = T2500
2 x T100 chips used to color-up T5 chips
(120 total chips in use)

C)
25/50 blinds, T7000 stacks (140BB)
20 x T25
20 x T100
9 x T500
-------------
49 chips = T7000
2 x T500 chips used to color-up T25 chips
(100 total chips in use)

D)
50/100 blinds, T12000 stacks (120BB)
20 x T25
20 x T100
9 x T500
5 x T1000
-------------
54 chips = T12000
2 x T500 chips used to color-up T25 chips
(110 total chips in use)

Variations A) and C) get used most often, for two reasons: largest number of starting big blinds, and requires one even rack per heads-up match. Versions B) and D) are actually better blind structures, imo. Of course, you can use nearly ALL of the chips heads up with 10/20 starting blinds and huge T12500 stacks (625BB), with 2 spare T100 chips to color-up the 5's.

I do have one 100-chip set that is constructed as follows:
40 x T25
40 x T100
16 x T500
4 x T1000
-------------
100 total chips
which uses 20/20/7/2 stacks (T8000) with 2 spare T500's to color up the T25 chips. But the rack isn't as pretty as the others. ;)

It's pretty rare to get to the second color-up, so 5K plaques would typically not see any play -- unless you added them to the starting stacks.

I'll ask a couple of stoopid questions. Why are you looking at selling them? Not using the set and looking to free up the funds? Do you (or would you ) run tourneys and have other sets to cover those games, making this one expendable? I ask because IMHO the answers would really dictate what I sell. If you're looking to maximize your $ but hold onto a bit of the set, I would stick with keeping more of the lower denoms and sell more of the $100s & $500s, as those will fetch higher dollars. If that's the case, option A given above would be best (100 piece HU, 40-$5s, 40-$25s, 20-$100s). You could probably sell the rest for around a grand.

On the other hand you stated you already had two other head's up sets. I used to have a similar breakdown to what you have for tourneys, you can keep a ~450 chip tourney set for 10-12 people using 1K starting stacks. 200-$5s, 140-$25s, 100-$100s and keep all the really cool higher denoms. Selling the rest would probably net you $500-$550, depending on how quick you want to sell them. That way you have a nice set both a 10 man tourney or a heads up game.

Basically, I have too many sets and this one has never seen play (plus the breakdown doesn't make sense). I have a 20 player tourney set up of Empress, an 18 player tourney set of PCA, and for that miracle day if it ever happens I have a 30 player tourney set up of Pharaoh chinas. In addition, I have a 9 player set up of GVs and a deep cash set up of PCAs. We need money right now as we try and buy a house and fund some dental work. Having all these chips does not make sense right now. That said, I spent a ton of time collecting them and it is hard to let them go! Based on the small quantity of high denoms, I thought another HU set made the most sense. (this sucks)

if you're wondering, my opinion, I would have left them all .... :)
Especially considering how hard they battered me also ...
Of course the decision to accept only you, but you can reduce them to a reasonable limit, and keep them in the game only with close friends.
For tournaments in 30 people, I think it is quite fit China Clay.

Would I ever sell them?

The setup you have may not make much sense as a tournament set, but I think it's very suitable as a microstakes cash set. You could use the $5 as 5¢, the $25 as 25¢, $100 as $1, etc.

Let's face it... these chips are awesome. Why would you want to sell them?
Don't get me wrong, I'd love for you to sell them, cuz I'd love to buy them, but ask anyone who had a set of PNY's and sold them. They all regret it.

Ah, I see your dilemma, and on a positive note that's a nice dilemma to have, those are some nice sets. :) If you need the cash and don't use the set, I'd stick with BG's option A and part ways with the rest of the set. However, that being said...

^^^^ speaketh the truth, especially those $500s.

Good stuff, you would have regretted selling off those purples & plaques. :)
