Sorry if this isn't the place to post this, I'm new to the forum! I tried searching for some similar threads, but I feel like my question is fairly specific.

I live in a house with roommates who really want to get back into playing some poker, and we're all excited to give it a go this weekend. None of us in the house have chips, so I've been looking around for a set. I ended up stumbling on this website and now I'd really like to get a nicer set, but I'll have to settle for something cheap just to get started this weekend.

To get to the point, I'm torn between these two cheapo sets that I've managed to track down. A family friend is offering me 500 11.5g "suited" poker chips for $10 with an aluminum case, and I found a guy selling 500 14g "ace king suited" chips in a clear plastic case for $20 online. I know that both these options are probably super crap haha, but I'm just curious if there's any point at all in spending the extra $10 on the heavier set?

Again sorry if this is a stupid post haha. Any advice or roasts are appreciated :p

I've owned both. They both suck.

With that said, the 14-gram slug chips are really really heavy. It becomes an ordeal to carry around Racks of them. Players don't like them because they're just too damn heavy and your hands hurt after a while stacking them.

Whichever you can get faster and easier...get playing!
This. The experience of playing with your buds is more important than the chip quality. Get it going, have a good time, then you can focus on the finer things in poker life, like chips and tables, and apparently hot dog rollers.
cheers!

Also something to consider - how much of each color does each set have?

A typical color breakdown does
White - 1
Red - 5
Blue - 10(?)
Green - 25
Black 100

You’re obviously welcome to decide which color corresponds to what denomination, but with whatever you go with, you’ll want to make sure you have enough chips for each player. As an extreme example, even a super nice 500 chip set wouldn’t do you much good if it was just 490 blues, and then 10 red chips.

Other than that, agree with the comment about getting whichever set you can get faster. I played with 14g chips with my college buddies plenty of times and no one ever had an issue. If your game takes off then you can upgrade.

welcome to the forum!

B&G chips are also 14grams but I don’t think anyone would mind having a B&G set.
I think weight is one thing but the chip quality is also a thing. These cheap slugs are just garbage , that’s the hole point IMO

look on facebook marketplace and Kijiji... you will get the same stuff but often cheaper and occasionally a better set for a good price. Like Pinesol13 said look for the set with the best case......to put your new poker chips in after you replace the junk ones you are looking at.

Out of curiousity, are you playing cash games, or tournaments?

A few points:
  • Either one will do just fine.
  • You'll probably be happier with the one that comes in a nicer case.
  • Heavier chips can be a pain to lug around.
  • If you particularly like the way that one or the other looks, go with that.
  • There are plenty of chips out there that you'd probably like a whole lot more, but they'll also cost a whole lot more - ten or twenty bucks for a set of 500 is basically free.
  • Don't feel like you have to go buy nicer chips; if you end up using these for a long time, then great! Upgrade whenever it seems worth it to you to spend the money.
  • Most people don't notice or care how nice their chips are. Your buddies will probably be happy with whatever chips you supply, whether it's either of these today or something nicer later on.

Go with the 11.5g, because that's the official casino weight.

Joking aside, I'd go with them because they're cheaper and as others have stated less impractical weight wise.

This sums it up perfectly!

Both chips are pretty lousy, but I'd go with the heavier chips in hopes their weight will lend stackability to otherwise frictionless chips.

Man I remember getting those AK chips waaay back when. I thought they were going to be this huge upgrade over the typical dice chips. They looked so much nicer and were one of the first lines that introduced 3 colors per chip iirc. I even think they were marketed as tri-color chips as their name. Anyway, I was so disappointed in the feel that I just threw them away. They were the slickest chips I've ever handled and I just couldn't use them.

I say go with the cheapest solution here.

A couple things to keep in mind:

The difference in weight is 1.25kg (2.75lbs) for all 500 chips. If lugging an extra 3lbs is inconvenient then you have your answer.

Also, how much is that $10 worth to you? If you make, say, $40/hour, would you want to work an “additional 15 minutes” for the more expensive set.

If you don’t prefer the appearance of one over the other, both are easy to obtain, and the above doesn’t matter, then it’s really a coin flip since these chips will “perform” relatively similarly.

The cheaper option is being offered by "a family friend" while the heavier more expensive option is offered by someone "online". Since they both play the same, I would go with the family friend. I prefer my money goes to people I give a damn about instead of some stranger.

Well shit, I’ve given a lot of my money to some strangers on this forum.... oops....

It doesn't make any difference, they are both crap.

Go with the set that has a useable breakdown. If you continue to play, you will upgrade, then it will matter. This is like being picky about trash can liners, it doesn't matter as you'll be getting rid of them soon.

Buddy, trash can liners matters 200%
you ever had one too many tequila sunrises after your buddies bachelor party, only to find yourself calling to the dinosaurs in your kitchen can? Then go to lift the 20 lb bag of the remnants from your mostly unrecognizable evening out of the can and across your living room to your dumpster, and in the middle of everything, the wimpy wimpy wimpy liner couldn’t withstand the shards from the whisky decanter you broke, and the whole bag tears open and spews all over your carpet?....
Get Hefty. Where it matters most.

Just think if you are going to have this hobbie in a constant basis, if not go for the cheap ones
