New to all of this, literally have never been on any forum. Recently purchased a set of poker chips and started researching. Can anyone tell me why a poker player gravitates toward one type of chip or another? I understand the condition of used chips would matter, but why a specific brand and why, for instance, a Paulson Top Hat & Cane preference over, say, a Paulson Horse chip?

Depends on YOUR likes and dislikes.. If I was putting together a set of Casino used and my favorite chip was from NYNY, like thier $1 chip, I would want to find the same mold for the other denoms of chips.

If you buy the Horseshoe chips, they have a different mold and some people do not like mixing molds..

If you go the custom rout, what ever mold you like from that company is the mold you are going to get.
Poker players that also like poker chips (as much as the people on this forum) probably make up 5 to 10 percent of ALL poker players.

To me Condition of the chip really only matters because of the price. I started with a highly used set of chips and worked my way into a mint set, then I sold that and got me a custom set..

Good luck, can you post pic's of your set???

Hello, welcome to PCF
Most people gravitate to a chip based on color, texture, rarity, weight... basically to each is own!!
Basically they aren't making paulsons available to the public anymore, GPI bought them out they have the same mold but the clay isn't the same. So all of these casino paulsons from closed casinos and house mold/fantasy sets are no longer being produced. So if you have them you have them, if not you're SOL until someone sells a set to purchase some customs, or TRKs. Everyone has their own taste, some people love their customs over other chips, some customize paulsons with label overs (new sticker labels) or inlay replacement (known as murdering them)
Condition typically only affects the price, but some prefer to handle only minty chips, others prefer bicycle tires (wore out rounded chips)

Would love to see some pics of your set!!

Cheers, Brie

Never been part of a forum? I hear you. I hadn't been either until I joined PCF. Best advice I can give is to not overthink your posts. Some people will think your posts are dumb, but most will enjoy your perspective.

Oh, and even though we may sound cool and witty, most of us are old, ugly, nerdy losers.

Stop being so modest Dan! You know all chippers are super hot model types walking around with their entourages and bling.
Who are you kidding? :ROFLMAO:

Welcome to PCF, @Suz! A lot of us have appreciation for all the chips. Paulsons, TRK, CPC, ceramics, and hybrids all have their draw. Get samples and enjoy all the amazing chips, info, and most importantly, people on the forum.

It’s mostly personal preference.
Some people like Vegas chips and some people like Cali chips.
Some prefer TRKs and some Paulsons.
Most of us here prefer to collect sets but some prefer to collect singles.
Chips have different sizes, weights and even sound different when shuffling or splashed into a pot.
Many prices can also vary on the availability or rarity of certain chips and sets as well.
Best advice is to see what’s out there. Buy some samples of things that interest you or try and hit some casinos for a little table time.
Eventually you’ll find something you just have to have for what ever reason.
I think this is kinda how it all starts.
A love of poker and card playing tends to do it as well.
Welcome to PCF and best wishes.

Hello and welcome!

Take your time to browse this site, especially the Classifieds, the Custom chips, the Mail Pr0n, and Home Game areas. You will be exposed to lots and lots of different types of chips from extremely low end to extremely high end, and be able to see the variety out there in use. You might even get a good idea of what the current state of the market is for various types of chips. Have fun and good luck with your search!

Welcome! This is my first and only forum (not even reddit). No question is a dumb question (unless it’s about boats  ) so feel free to ask away and get addicted to little clay discs that cost way too much money:tup:
