I have a playable set of Starburst chips for a 10 player table. We normally play .25/.50 with 60 max buy in and 60 max rebuy's.

My starting stacks are

12 x .25 (gray starburst)
17 x 1 (light blue starburst)
8 x 5 (red starburst).

I use 25.00 chips for the rebuys. I'm thinking of replacing the 25 chip with a 25 plaque.

Occasionally I host a .5/1 game with a 100 buy in. I could use one or two plaques in the starting stacks.

This is something that I normally see so I thought I would gather some opinions.

If you're a yes or no vote I would like to hear why.

Thanks in advance.

Bill

When I get home I will post a picture of the starting stacks/colors

The thread to discuss designing a non denom starbust plaque

I'm a fan of using a plaque for the biggest denom at the table... but it shouldn't be a denomination that is typically in play.

It has an element of coolness to it, but it also makes it easier to keep a handle on people's stack sizes. Two or three big-denom chips can easily be lost from sight, depending on how people stack 'em.

Custom cash set plaques (usually $20 or $100) have been made by several chippers, although I can't think of any specific examples off-hand. Seems like there was even a group buy once for an add-on cash game plaque for one of the casino sets sold by TCR.

Personally, I'd rather play with $20 plaques than allow $20 bills on the table. I think a $25 plaque would tilt me, but it may fit your existing game better.

In fact, now that I think on it, I'm thinking I'd like a set of non-denominated plaques in my set. I play a wide variety of stakes, so having no denomination on my plaques lets me use them as the "big" unit as a different denomination, as appropriate.

There were PCA plaques made IIRC ($20 and $100?).

I like bricks of singles on the table if you want $100 denominations. Otherwise, a $20 plaque sounds good.

Although I personally prefer chips to plaques for all but stratospheric denominations, I understand and appreciate their appeal to other members. It's nice to have options, especially when you have a set for which the highest denoms are scarce, ridiculously expensive, or non-existent.

For those who have plaques, are your players more likely to bet them (intimidation factor) or hoard them?

one of Lucky Dog's many beautiful sets - his original, in fact - had a plaque for use in cash games. i love it and think it's a great option for .25/.50 games that don't see a lot $20/25 chips/plaques on the table. see original Big Blue thread here.

I think the smallest size OWPS plaque would work for you here. I can't think of any that were made, though. You should get a sample set from OWPS.

somehow i spaced on another of my favorite of all time sets which also features a plaque for use in cash games. karash really went all out getting matsuie plaques and they look fucking magnificent. original thread here.

I say absolutely yes. Anytime someone can figure out a new way to spend money on poker supplies, I'm down with it!

Of course you would say that. How many sets do you have? Not being a hater............Color me envy.

gonna get a game this weekend? want to play, damn commitments.......

I don't have much design talent though. I might need some help coming up with an idea. I wouldn't need to many plaques, maybe 50 at the most. hmmmmm

I would also be up for purchasing current plaques instead of designing my own. Pending of course they would look decent with the starburst set.

I think non denom is the way to go btw. Thanks for whoever mentioned it.

You could probably even resell a decent generic no-denom starburst design plaque, if so inclined.

I'm kind of surprised that doesn't exist yet. Could make a good group buy, if it weren't so easy to hit minimums with plaques.

No denying there are some sweet cash sets with great plaques out there but personally for me chips>plaques>cash plays. I think they slow down the game a bit also (either self-dealt or dealer).

But how could we forget these beauties! GB!

@courage, why would they slow the game down? Never heard that.

Thanks,

I very quickly perused the vendors (sure I missed a few). Here are a couple of plaques that caught my eye.

I've always liked the Pharaoh's chips and plaques. Just don't think their non denom would go with the starbust set.

Classic Poker Room plaques are affordable and mention customizable. Does anyone know if they do that? or if I buy the plaques, then have them customized separately? I plan on reaching out to them later.

I checked OWG's site (and PM'd him) about his plaques. The only non denom's I see are the dice plaques. I'm just not a fan of those.

quicksilver, i would love to see all your chips and plaques in a big pr0n thread on this board. easily the best labeled ABS chip set i've ever seen.

Hey DD!
Good to hear from you. I could easily set up a design that would go with your starburst set. Just say the word. I would go with something simple, non denom and in the same color family as the starbursts. I wouldn't go with a stock design. And you're better off going with a custom plaque because the pricing is much better for you as well. I sent you a PM about that.

And with customs you get to choose from the different sizes. 68mm. 82mm, 94mm and 107mm are all rounded corner and thick plaques. They're really substantial. And we have the old 85mm standard thinner plaque which everyone is familiar with.

I feel like a small or medium sized plaque would be best for your set for some reason. I don't know that's just me.

Maybe kick around some design ideas on this thread for a Starburst plaque and I can take some of those ideas and get a design done. We could even turn it into a group buy possibly.

I still regret not taking part in this BCC GB (for the base chips).

totally agree. philthethrille also had a beautiful set on them. club 818 or something like that - tourney and cash series and book looked great.

EDIT: found the tourney set.

Yes.... I am quoting my own post, and I did not want to edit it.....Sorry if this is wrong...

I forgot to say that I actually want to do a oversize $20 and then a plaque for the Hundo.....I think this would be the way to go, unfortunately the 44mm A mold is not available:(

I think this would be ideal as well. Unfortunately I wouldn't even come close to the minimum for a 44mm order based on my breakdown.
