Hey Guys,

Looking for denomination advice for a combo micro stakes game, and small NL. Ideally I just want one set for both .25/.5 an 1/2. Hopefully there's some combination of 600-1000 chips for 5-7 players. Can I get away with only .25 as my only sub $1 denomination, or would I typically need .50c as well to keep the game consistent?

Side note: How often do the major retailers on this site have their sales? Should I be monitoring daily?! TIA!

Easy.

We generally play either .25/.25 or 1/1 and I am very comfortable right around 140/300/300/60/20 (.25/$1/$5/$25/$100)

For .25/.25-1/2 I don't think you would ever need more than 900: 120/300/340/100/40 (.25/$1/$5/$25/$100). You could add more 5's if you wanted. Or you could subtract 1s and some 5s if you wanted to keep it to 800 chips.

EDIT: Just realized you are playing 7 people max.

100/280/300/80/40 (.25/$1/$5/$25/$100) for an 800 chip set is more than enough which is $7805 bank.

I'd cut back on the $1s and add $5s, because nobody needs more than two racks of $1s for .25/.50 or $1/2, 7-max. But otherwise this is about right.

Can definitely get away with only needing .25s. No need for .50s unless you just want the chip.

600 chips could do 100/200/200/80/20 (or 75/25) depending on how you buy. That’s 26 buy-ins of 1-2, which should be plenty for 5-7 players. If you wanted to add more, I’d add more 1s and 5s then fracs.

Which chips and retailers were you looking at?
I just ordered samples from Apache of the Dunes, Pharoh, HSI, and Royal. I love clay buy am not opposed to ceramics... might take a look at the Tiki's from BRPro Poker. I'm also interested in piecing together a set from the classifieds too, saw a beautiful cash set of Martini Club's but too new to bid on it.

I'd say I'm halfway between saving money on the China Clay's, and just doing it right on Paulsons of some sort. (I do love the dunes club colors and looks though, the pink 25c just do it for me)

Apache doesn’t really do sales. BRPro (I love the Dia De Los Muertos chips) occasionally does some sales but not massive. I wouldn’t wait for it.

It’s great that you got samples. HSI are real compressed clay Paulsons. “China clays” like Dunes and Pharaoh are not clay (or at least only have a very very tiny amount of clay in their injection molded build. You can also get a sample set of CPCs. Classic Poker Chips is the company that made the actual chips in the Rounders movie. They are the only other company besides Paulson still making true compressed clay chips. But CPC can actually make fully custom compressed clay. You can find used or stock CPC sets available for sale as well.

I found PCF while evaluating different “China clays” on Apache and ended up with a Dunes cash set. I ended up buying a CPC tournament set after that and then a set of used casino Paulsons (Aransas) set. Then it just continued downhill from there :)

Your best option (price for quality) would be to pick up casino used chips. Tons of chips available right now.

You can put them into play immediately as a mixed set, then work with one of the graphic artists here to create a personal design, murder the chips and relabel. You get true casino chips and your own labels, its just a little bit of work and time but WAAAY cheaper than buying full new customs and WAAAY better quality than the china-clays.

Would you suggest just looking through the classifieds? Or any other places to look for specifically used casino chips!

That's exactly how I find PCF too! I think I may end up with a set of the Dunes regardless, they're just too beautiful. Hopefully won't be too long before I add on the paulsons, ha!

Use the search function to find the member THECHIPROOM and look his last sale. I believe he still has a lot of the used chips left. Lots of cheap $1 from his last sale all over fleabay right now too. As long as you arent in a hurry, you could play with cheap plastic chips right now and wait until TCR posts another casino hoard.

Edit- there are also a lot of members unloading "excess" chips from the sale TCR just had.

Perfect, thanks for the advice!

I was in a similar position as you when I started out. Wanted to get a nicer set, but couldn’t quite pull the trigger on Paulsons and didn’t feel like waiting for a Chip Room sale.

I ended up just getting a full set of Apache Majestics. They’re great chips, and allowed me to quickly get a fun set of chips in play with my friends.

If you eventually do go on and decide you want paulsons, the resale value on your majestics or royals or whatever chips will likely be really high. So can always think of it as buying now and then upgrading later.
